They were together in Preet Na Kariyo Koi and joined hands for Udaari and now the dynamic duo of Ahsan Khan (actor) and Ehteshamuddin (director) are back with another drama from MD Productions.
While there last two plays were more current, this time they decided to go back in time and adopt a classic Khadija Mastoor novel Aangan to give the audience something different. Ahsan Khan, who plays two roles in Aangan, is quite confident that the drama will do well since it has an ensemble cast, a brilliant script and above all, features him in a first-time double role. Excerpts:
It was a challenging experience to say the least as I had to play two generations – first the father and then the son.
Since they both belonged to different eras and were to have different looks, it was fun as well as I hadn’t done anything like that before. Yes, both the characters don’t meet onscreen but they had to look apart and that’s a challenge I didn’t want to miss.
My characters in Aangan are different from my other dramas where I play twisted characters; here the characters are simple and romantic and it was fun to play someone like that.
When you are playing someone else, the atmosphere, the costumes, the dialogues, the hairstyle and even the way you speak it all helps; when you play a twisted person, then it’s difficult as it was in Udaari. It’s my belief that when you understand the psyche of the character, it always helps and that’s what happened to me in Aangan.
Aaaaaah (Laughs). Since I play two characters in two different eras, I seem to have two heroines each, meaning 4 leading ladies. As now it’s quite open but you will get to see that in coming episodes.
You have no idea how great a learning experience it was to share the screen with legendary actors like Zeb Rehman and Abid Ali. We tend to forget our seniors during promotions but trust me, you can’t miss them in the play.
They are one of the finest actors our industry has produced and we need to give them more respect for they spent years and years to reach this place. They are acting institutions and we can learn a lot from them, the way they act, deliver dialogues and perform onscreen taught me a lot and I am sure was helpful to others as well.
It was a bit of all – Ehtesham’s direction, Khadija Mastoor’s novel, Mustafa Afridi’s lines, and Momina Bhabi’s productions.
I also loved the two characters and found it tempting, although the audience loves it when I play different, twisted characters which weren’t what I was doing here. I so wanted to be part of this play because plays like Aangan are produced once in a blue moon.
I am glad I was part of Dastaan and now Aangan as these are the kind of plays that have repeat value and are made in decades. I also love the feel of period plays where you have the margin to perform and outshine.
They are much better than the drawing room dramas that we do despite knowing that they aren’t going to be dubbed as classics. Momina Duraid Productions must be credited for going for something out of the ordinary and trust me, people will remember this play for a long time because of that.
I am one of those actors who doesn’t believe in over expecting and love to keep it low profile, all the time. With Aangan, Hum TV has created a hype which is a good thing but because of the hype, you tend to lose the surprise element.
I know we worked hard in the drama and that’s enough reason for us to feel proud of it. I am so glad that people are loving it and praising the acting, the writing and the direction for being different than run-of-the-mill-stuff.
They say dramas are a women-centric medium and it’s not really untrue. However, as the industry is growing and is gaining a wider audience and a global outreach, more male characters are being written that are catering and speaking strongly to a male audience as well.
Here are some of our male actors who made an impact with their performances.
Imran Ashraf has always been acting on television in a brilliant way and has been delivering some powerful performances but 2018 was truly his year. With Alif Allah aur Insaan’s Shammo and Ranjha Ranjha Kardi’s Bhola, Imran owned 2018.
He also wrote the drama serial Tabeer and we gotta say, we’re mighty impressed by this guy. What a multi-talented versatile actor he is.
Farhan Saeed’s very successful and well-received role in Udaari was a long time ago and people definitely missed him on the screen.
As he returned with Arsal in Suno Chanda, the hit drama serial was also a big success because of his own comedic timing and no-nonsense performance. We really hope we can see him in more dramas soon.
This comedian turned actor is known for hilarious mimicking talents and short sketches and he was hilarious in Parwaz Hai Junoon. Even though his role in Parwaz Hai Junoon was very short but it made a strong impact and we can definitely say that he would be very successful if he pursues acting full time.
Alamdar Khan also had a small role in Parwaz Hai Junoon but he made an impact as well and will soon be seen in another drama serial on Hum TV alongside Hania Aamir. He’s another star in the making, guys. Watch out.
Ali Safina played a maniacal character in Tabeer and is definitely one of the most versatile actors we see onscreen today. His character in Tabeer is an over the top one and it takes a lot of talent to pull such a feat off so flawlessly.
You would love to hate 'Ali Safina' in Tabeer
Tabeer | An unusual yet the most intriguing character, Ali Safina as Ajju stole the show with his amazing acting. What do you think about his unique avatar? For more: www.hum.tv/spotlight

Who are your favorite actors in 2018? Let us know in the comments.
Pakistani actresses have proven their mettle by working very hard and doing some extremely great work this year.
Some of the relatively new comers this year have also done great exceptionally well and we are totally waiting for more of them in the coming year.
Here are some of the drama artists that we loved seeing onscreen:
This has definitely been Iqra’s year. She gave hits after hits and has displayed a variety of roles. Iqra’s sparky and uninhibited portrayal of her characters makes her seem effortless but that’s mainly because this young actress is very very talented. Be it Suno Chanda or Ranjha Ranjha Kardi, we totally adore her.
Aiman Khan had been doing smaller roles before in many dramas but in Baandi she truly shines as Meeru, a young girl brought from the village to the big city who faces a harsh time. Aiman has proven her worth as a credible actress in the drama and shows that she can essentially carry off a drama on her own shoulders.
This is one actress that is here to stay! Zara’s sensitive portrayal in Khamoshi and Lamhay earned her lot of appreciation from her fans. She is one such actor, who has manged to earn a name for herself by her sheer hard work and perseverance. Look at her work in Khamoshi, isn’t it brilliant?
Portraying a horror avatar is no joke and we are glad that Amar Khan went there. She was thoroughly enjoyable as the female spectre in Belapur ki Dayan, a horror drama that aired on Hum TV this year.
Horror has always been an overlooked genre in Pakistani dramas but these moments from Bela Pur Ki Dayan will give you nightmares. For full episodes: http://bit.ly/2Q4Paqm

Kiran Haq starred as Nadia in Dar Si Jaati Hai Sila provided the relief that was long awaited in the much tensed drama serial. She played the role of Noman ijaz’s wife and we just loved her character.
Nadia was an outspoken, unapologetic, strong character. Even though she comes from a socioeconomically weaker family than those who lived in Noor Manzil, she was extremely confident, spunky and intelligent.
Just like her sister, Minal Khan proved her acting skills in both of these dramas. Be it Parchayee or Ki Jaana Main Kon, her performance was thoroughly praised.
Beenish was seen as Kubra Khan’s best friend in Sange Mar Mar and had more of a subdued role in that drama but in Bisaat e Dil she plays an arrogant young woman. She has done both these roles wonderfully and was also great in last year’s Yaqeen Ka Safar.
Who was your favorite? Let us know in the comments.
