The name Hashim Nadeem carries weight when it comes to TV dramas in Pakistan; his most recent play Ishq Zahe Naseeb impressed all with his filmi storytelling and even got nominated in nearly every category of Lux Style Awards.
The dynamic playwright is back with another play Raqs e Bismil, the teasers of which were revealed on Wednesday. Besides featuring two extremely talented actors Imran Ashraf and Sarah Khan in the lead, the play marks the return of Wajahat Rauf as a director on TV, with his wife and producer Shazia Wajahat ensuring that nothing goes wrong in the project.
The two teasers managed to raise the audience’s expectations and made them anxious to wait for the drama that would begin airing next month. Read on to know four of the many reasons that will make you wait for play:
Currently Imran Ashraf is ruling the scene as Adam in Mushk which is also written by him. He plays the ‘daddy of all heroes’ because he doesn’t care how his good deeds will affect him, for his objective is to bring happiness to the face of those he loves. Before that, he was the detested Rehan Chaudhry in Inkaar and the annoying Bhola in Ranjha Ranjha Kardi for which he has been nominated as the Best Actor in the Lux Style Awards 2020.
In Raqs e Bismil, he looks like both a young man possessed with rage and one in love with a stunner, played by Sarah Khan. Why was he chosen for the role of Moosa and how did he try to make it different from his other characters, both Shazia Wajahat the producer, and actor Imran Ashraf had interesting stories to tell.
According to the producer Shazia Wajahat, ‘I always wanted to work with Imran Ashraf but we were usually producing films and he was busy in TV dramas; I also was waiting for a perfect script to cast him so when I got the script of Raqs e Bismil, the first name that came into my mind was that of Imran for Moosa. I am glad that we managed to rope him in for he is a team player as well as a powerful actor.’
Imran Ashraf has a more or less similar story to tell about how he ended up with the role of Moosa. ‘I was sitting at home when Shazia Bhabi called me up and started telling me about the new drama, and the character of Moosa.
By the time she had briefed me, I had stood up in anticipation, and told her that if she hasn’t cast anyone else in the role, I would be willing to be Moosa. I had a great time working with her and Wajahat Bhai who are a great team and take care of the cast like two heads of a huge family.
The biggest challenge I faced was to look different – different than Bhola, different than Rehan Chaudhry, different than Adam – and thanks to my team and co-actors, I think I have managed to do that, with the approval of the writer and the director. Phew!’
For those who think that the character of Miraal in Sabaat was the best performance of Sarah Khan, think again. The teasers of Raqs e Bismal show her in a new avatar, one that is much different from Miraal as well as her other characters. She looks gorgeous in every frame of the teaser and makes the audience fall in love with her again, which was a hard thing to do considering everyone hates Miraal, more than they hate Covid-19 in 2020.
Shazia Wajahat was all praise for her female lead as well, terming her as the perfect fit for Zohra’s character. ‘For Zohra, even the writer had Sarah Khan in mind when he was writing Raqs e Bismil, and I actually imagined her when reading it as well. She was the perfect one for this character and our first and last choice too and she will shock the audience who don’t expect her to do another powerful character so soon!’
These days, TV dramas choose popular actors in lead roles and leave the supporting ones to whoever is available. However, Shazia Wajahat has gone against the tide and selected the best possible actors for her drama; if Mahmood Aslam was needed in the character of the patriarch, then Mahmood Aslam was approached, selected and locked.
The same goes for seasoned actors; Nida Mumtaz, Sajid Shah, Rashid Farooqui, Gul e Rana and Saleem Meraj have been cast due to their ability to mold themselves in their characters than on the basis of their fan following.
Although she isn’t shown in either of the teasers, film actress and the drop-dead gorgeous diva Zara Sheikh makes her TV debut through Raqs e Bismil, in a pivotal role. Sisters Javeria Abbasi and Anoushay Abbasi reunite for the project after a long time while talented youngsters Furqan Qureshi and Taha Humayun can also be seen playing characters that are yet to be revealed. Comedian Momin Saqib, who recently made his TV debut through Be Adab, could be seen playing Imran Ashraf’s brother in Raqs e Bismil and has done a wonderful job for someone who is new to acting.
Seems like the producer did a fascinating job going for the best so that the audience remain mesmerized during the serial’s airing. When asked about the casting process, Shazia Wajahat had this to say: ‘I really enjoyed doing the casting for this play since each character is powerful in his or her own way. When the audience will see they will definitely agree that all the actors have done perfect justice to their characters and were the right choice for it.’
For the last five years Wajahat Rauf has been busy making films and only decided to return to TV because of Hashim Nadeem’s script and his wife Shazia’s involvement with the project.
However, his spending time in filmdom helped the script in a way that no one imagined. Not only do we witness a fight sequence in the teaser, but beauty shots, long shots, close-ups, and Steadicam shots that give the audience the feeling of watching a film, instead of a TV drama.
The way Imran Ashraf walks in the teaser shows that he means business, even if it means taking the law in his hand, whereas the grace with which Sarah Khan carries herself makes her seem like someone straight out of a dream sequence.
Raqs e Bismil begins airing next month on HUM TV
Bold, beautiful, and headstrong; Navin Waqar is no less than an empress in the realm of entertainment.
There is always a fire in her eyes, a passion that she then translates into her craft and creates magic on screen. Sharply observing her career trajectory, we deduced that the starlet is a firm believer of quality over quantity. She will probably sign projects very seldom but deliver them all with aplomb.
Despite the fact she will remain famous for her antagonist avatar in Humsafar, Navin has made sure she rises from the shadow of that vampy role and prove she is beyond Sara.
She proved that she can make us laugh as Annie, inspire us as Emaan in Hum TV’s Mol, and now is pumped up to spook us all out with her mysterious character in Chalawa.
This drama is unlike the rest that Navin signed up for. In fact, with horror and thriller as its genre, all eyes are on Chalawa at the moment. Expectations are high from the story’s execution and the entire cast. After all, directors and writers rarely touch upon this genre. But that doesn’t mean there is a low demand for horror stories in Pakistan’s television industry. Amidst love triangles and saas-bahu brawls, we surely need dramas that can be a breath of fresh air on our screens.
Will Chalawa be able to fill the missing gap? We asked Navin Waqar what made her chose this drama. Hopeful that the audience will be gripped by it, here’s all that the starlet revealed to us in a heart-to-heart.
Chalawa isn’t your typical love triangle with characters whose single aim in life is to get married. This was a challenge for a lot of reasons and a risk as well because this genre is not touched upon as much.
The story is different; the treatment is something that stands out. I always look to experiment and take a chance and that’s what I loved about Chalawa. I picked it because it’s nothing like what’s running on television at the moment.
The first thing I realized was that I have never actually screamed out of fear on screen before so that was a challenge. Being afraid without overdoing it with the expressions. I’m a huge horror buff so I’ve seen pretty much every movie out there which helped me prepare accordingly for Chalawa.
I have never delved into this genre before so it was exciting and a learning experience for me at the same time. Luckily I had the visionary duo of directors cheering me on.
Mahnoor is a character who has lost the love of her life and now her entire life revolves around her daughter Sawera. She is a level-headed, pragmatic, and strong woman who finds herself fighting forces that were unimaginable, inexplicable.
We see her determination and strength shine through once the story progresses. It’s a story about sacrifice, the love between a mother and daughter, and how power corrupts even the best of us.
The story has just begun so there is so much in store. The audience will get to know the history of the family, the real reason why this entity latches itself onto Sawera.
There are major shocking twists and turns because this isn’t just horror but is a mystery thriller as well. This isn’t a story of an ordinary family. It will keep you hooked I promise.
Because we’ve hardly touched upon this genre, every attempt is going to be a stepping stone. It’s going to be a learning experience for the directors and actors. I’m not saying that Chalawa is perfect regarding its execution but I hope it leaves a mark because of its story and the hard work that has gone into it.
I’ve been very lucky to have worked with Shamoon Abbasi and Najaf Bilgrami because they have done horror and thrillers before. This wasn’t an easy project but what resulted is the collective effort of the entire team and I sincerely hope people will give this a chance so that it can pave way for future projects in this genre.
Many! I was very lucky to be working with such wonderful people. Najaf has a great sense of humor and so do Naveed Raza and Ali Ansari. I had a spectacular time with Naveed shooting this one particular scene where I had to physically attack him. He had to fall repeatedly but he kept missing the mark and we couldn’t stop laughing.
I’ve experienced a few things that chilled me to the bone. When I was little I was told my grandparents’ house was haunted. As a child, I didn’t understand what that meant but strange things used to happen in that house. Like I would hear someone calling me but no one would be around. Or hearing constant banging on the doors but the rooms would be empty. Things would go missing and then magically reappear. I guess that’s why I’m not easily rattled by the unseen.
I have just finished a short film for the web and I am going to be shooting a web series soon which touches upon highly sensitive social issues and is an action thriller. I’m always looking for something different, subjects that people normally wouldn’t choose.
I aim to show our audience that there is more to life than wanting to marry your cousins. There are a thousand stories that can perhaps encourage people to give new ideas a chance.
HUM TV’s Mushk is currently keeping the audience on the edge of their seats with its power-packed story, excellent dialogues, and perfect execution.
Among all the characters in the drama, the one that stands out is Adam, played by Imran Ashraf, for the right reasons. He is the only character that has no chink in his armor and loves to do what his heart desires. He is different from all the other male protagonists in dramas currently on air and that’s why we have chosen him to be the Character of the Week.
Everyone in Mushk has something to hide; Zulekha (Zara Tareen) is slowly poisoning her husband (Hasan Ahmed) who was responsible for the attempted suicide of Saqib’s sister; Saqib (Raza Talish) in return kidnaps Zulekha’s daughter Roshni (Seher Khan) and sells her to the highest bidder in Karachi; Mehek (Momal Sheikh) marries Shayan (Osama Tahir) in London and comes over to Pakistan after he went missing; her Dada Jaan (Manzoor Qureshi) doesn’t know about their baby but erroneously suspects Mehek of having an affair with Saqib when it was Roshni who was meeting him late at night; Guddi (Urwa Hocane) who is supposed to pose as the mother of Shayan and Mehek’s kid is on the run from the police for her cons and wants to pay Zulekha back by nursing her husband back to life.
She also manages to divert the attention of Dr. Rana (Raja Haider) who was before her in love with Zulekha. In all this whirlpool of deceit, Adam is the only one who has no agenda, no objectives, has no bad bone in his body, and his only job is to keep Mehek happy, by hook or by crook!
When was the last time you saw a hero gagged up after he tried to rescue a damsel in distress, impulsively? Ever seen a writer go for a character that wasn’t a major one in the initial episodes of the play? Never. Imran Ashraf’s Adam falls in both the categories because in the last episode where he tried to rescue Roshni (Seher Khan), he was hit from behind and gagged when unconscious, while began as a minor character only to end up as a major player in the drama.
The way he delivers dialogues reminds one of both the Angry Young Man made famous by Amitabh Bachchan and the popular film actor Shahid from Pakistan, who would have been fit for the role of Adam’s father if the character was there in the script. To top it all, Imran Ashraf has written the script of Mushk and to excel in both the writing and acting departments is no small achievement.
The main reason Adam is able to stand out amongst all the protagonists is that a) he is likely not to end with the girl he loves and b) he knows her secret that no one else in the village does. That makes him all the more loveable because usually, people who get to know something they aren’t supposed to, especially about someone they care and know they have lost, blackmail that person to achieve their ulterior motives.
Here Adam knows everything yet wants to help Mehek (Momal Sheikh) in any way which he can because that’s what he believes is the righteous thing to do. He knows his boundaries, and that’s why when Dada Jaan (Manzoor Qureshi) requests him to marry the same girl he has always been in love with; his expressions were priceless.
He was happy that finally, he would be able to marry Mehek, he was stunned since he knew Mehek is the mother of the baby she claims is Guddi’s, he was shocked when his mind raced to the future where Shayan (Osama Tahir) might enter the frame and he was content that despite all this, he would be helping the girl he has always loved and who trusts him completely.
If you are following Imran Ashraf’s career since Alif Allah Aur Insaan, you will know that he doesn’t repeat a character just like most people don’t repeat expensive clothes. He played a transgender in Alif Allah Aur Insaan, the trusting Tipu in Tau Dil Ka Kia Hua, was the one and only Bhola in Ranjha Ranjha Kardi, played the detestable Rehan Chaudhry in Inkaar, was the sensible brother Zaid in Jaal, and is now playing the loveable Adam here.
Each of his characters is different from the other one in everything, from the way he walks, the way he talks, his dressing sense, his mannerisms, his appearance, and even his weight. Most of the people including this scribe were unable to recognize Imran Ashraf as Adam, such was his transformation from his biggest role so far – Bhola!
How do you want the story of a person to end who is in love with his friend since childhood yet is the only one who knows she is already married; who would take matters in his own hand if she says so despite knowing that he will not end up with her; who is loved by all because of his simple and straightforward nature; who doesn’t want to do anything bad and let anything bad happen to others, even if it means taking the bullet himself.
That kind of person should have the best end in the world, because if his story doesn’t end happily, the audience will stop believing in good and start rooting for bad!
It has been quite some time since Pakistan’s drama industry was blessed with a spooky, horror thriller of a story. Apparently, it has been an overdose of sibling rivalry, saas-bahu battles, and third triangles on our screen these days.
Consequently, when Najaf Bilgrami and Shamoon Abbasi’s ‘Chalawa’ rolled out the suspenseful teasers of Chalawa on Hum TV, a wave of curiosity was bound to spread amongst critics and drama aficionados. It is not often that we get to see a creepy, mystery on our television. What’s more, this genre of entertainment is rarely worked upon in our country.
However, the feedback of Chalawa has been positive on social media since its broadcast of two episodes, prompting us to review the tale and see what all the hype is about.
The drama stars Ali Ansari, Noor Zafar Khan, Navin Waqar, Usama Khan, Sameena Ahmed, Adnan Jaffar, and Naveed Raza in pivotal roles. Let’s study the story of the drama and see how it has progressed so far since its release.
Chalawa’s tale revolves around a young, pregnant widow Mahnoor (Navin Waqar). Living with her mother-in-law and aunt (Sameena Ahmed), she moves to Karachi to escape the depression and emptiness in her life.
The trouble begins when she visits a graveyard to pay a visit to her late husband in the dead of the night. There Mahnoor encounters a strange, uncanny man with a heavy built, deeply kohl-ed eyes, and haunting persona. He warns her not to stroll at the graveyard so late after dark and keeps observing her with his daunting gaze as she pays her final respects to her husband.
Shockingly, Mahnoor sees him again while leaving her home in Lahore and moving to Karachi. But he vanishes in the blink of an eye. From here begins our heroine’s tryst with the supernatural forces.
Moving on with her life, she applies for a job in a school where she gets harassed by the principal, Sarfaraz. What we see in the next scene gave us major goosebumps. As Mahnoor leaves the school premises after slapping the principal, an unseen force tries to strangle him. In defense, he tries to commit suicide by jumping from the roof.
Here again, the mystery man from the graveyard returns to haunt Mahnoor and departs with a cryptic warning.
Amidst all the drama, Mahnoor goes into labor and gives birth to a beautiful baby, Sawera. The drama gets more interesting with its second episode. The mystery man keeps visiting Mahnoor and now even her infant child gets enveloped in the paranormal drama that has plagued her life.
Various members of the family observe another mysterious child lying with Sawera. Her grandmother takes the young baby to a religious healer who bestows her with a black thread to keep the child safe from the evil eye and spirits.
We also meet the dandy, spiritual Professor (Adnan Jaffar) who has the gift of reading people’s minds and thoughts. Handling Sarfaraz’s case who has now lost his sanity, the Professor aims to get to the bottom of this. He visits Mahnoor to know what happened with his patient and after a detailed interaction, he deduces that there is a strange force attached to Mahnoor but is unable to find the root of all the supernatural activity.
The second episode ends with the drama fast-forwarding to twelve years in the future after all these bizarre incidents. Shockingly, we see a grown-up Sawera playing hide and seek with her mother. But as she tries to surprise her mother while hiding in the cupboard, her protective trinket given by the healer loosens. Behind her hiding in the same cupboard is a young boy, who is the spirit that has now attached himself with Sawera.
Like we established earlier, horror dramas are quite a rarity in our industry. But successfully, Chalawa has us hooked. Its spooky cinematography and haunting soundtrack add to the mystery in its plot, making it an enthralling watching experience altogether. Fans who are into unnerving fright-mares will enjoy it and will keep returning to Chalawa to follow up on the story.
So far, Naveen Waqar being the main lead has taken the limelight in the story. There is no doubt that she can gracefully carry any avatar that she signs up to portray. Accordingly, she is portraying the character of Mahnoor with all the enthusiasm her role demands. The bone-chilling scene where she is transformed into a witch-like figure with terrifying eyes was a disturbing sight to behold. We are delighted to see her back on Hum TV after a short hiatus, that too in a role that is extremely novel for her.
Equally, performing his best is Adnan Jaffar as the Professor. Dressed sharply and modestly, he too exudes major appalling vibes. There is an aura of suspense in her role and the actor has aced it with ease. In fact, he scared us so much in all the scenes where he is entering the thoughts of his target mind. We are excited to see what more value his character will be bringing to Chalawa’s story.
We are hoping that there is a veritable buffet of scary surprises in the drama. So far, we have given it a thumbs up. Let’s see what is next to come.
Mohabbatain Chahatain is currently in its third week but the one character that has registered itself amongst the audience is that of Tara, played by Armeena Khan.
Not only does she carry the ‘evil’ look in her eyes and face, but she is also evil in every sense of the way. For some, it might be a throwback to the ‘across-the-border’ dramas that dominated the Pakistani scene before HUM TV rendered them obsolete by providing excellent content, but such people do exist in our society.
This week we will discuss Tara in Character of the Week and analyze what makes her do things that another person would think twice before attempting.
Tara might be way good looking than the other characters in the drama but deep down inside, she hasn’t matured at all. She doesn’t know how to react when people say no to her and maybe that has got something to do with her upbringing or some complexes she might have developed growing up.
She doesn’t forget that the child of their ‘rescuers’ informed his father that he saw her smoking on the terrace and takes revenge in her own twisted way; she doesn’t like the fact that her friend (Hira Mani) and her husband (Junaid Khan) are an ideal couple who trust each other with their lives. The reason her own husband (Tipu Sharif) left her in the first episode is given credibility in the later episodes when he finds out that she ‘cleaned up’ his whole house, and his bank locker just to get back to him!
Tara is not just a person but a phenomenon that exists in our society. People with no children of their own don’t like those who do, those who don’t get attention at home seek attention in other places by doing weird stuff and those with no backing from their family don’t accept others to have it either.
The way Armeena Khan has played the character, the way she has changed from a bad person to an evil one is spine-chilling, you don’t expect someone who has played romantic leads on TV and films to do something this ‘out of character’ and then expect to get away with it!
If you thought Sarah Khan’s Miraal was a bad person in Sabaat, think again … Tara in Mohabbatain Chahatain is neither to be loved nor hated, she is there to be loathed. She is an immature woman who refuses to grow up, is intelligent enough to plot the downfall of her friend’s happy marriage, and shrewd enough to steal everything from her ex-husband’s house, shift it to some other place and act as if it was robbed by someone else.
She didn’t slap anyone in public or private, instead stole the limelight at her friend’s party by claiming she was pregnant when she knew that her friend was the one who was expecting a baby. She then manipulated the receptionist at a local lab into falsifying her report to make it look like she was telling the truth, and that’s something one hasn’t done in local dramas.
She likes to eavesdrop 24×7 because she doesn’t need extra money, her ex-husband’s stash that she stole is enough for her to live without caring about finances, and since she is living with his friend’s family, and can’t see them happy, she will try to do what no ‘target killer’ can achieve – make them suspicious of each other so that they are no longer happy.
Who can forget the stunning Saman in Bin Roye or the happy-go-lucky Haniya in Karb; even in the feature film Yalghaar her character was in love with an Army officer (Bilal Ashraf) who achieves martyrdom, generating sympathies for her character. However, with Tara, she gets no sympathy at all from anyone, not even from her husband who divorced her in front of everyone because he couldn’t take it anymore.
Armeena Khan has done a fabulous job because she not only acts evil but looks evil which is very difficult to do especially when you are a hazel-eyed beauty who blossoms when romance is in the air. To do something that doesn’t come naturally to you always gets extra points in my book, and Armeena Khan has achieved that by playing a purely villainous role and impressed the audience, or made them hate her for a change.
No matter how huge or shrewd a villain is in a film or a drama, he or she usually meets a horrible end to send a message that there is no place for evil in the world. Tara should also meet such an end, especially since she doesn’t care who the person is against whom she is plotting.
Prompting the very people who saved her to go against each other could be attributed to the fact that she didn’t have a happy married life but rubbing a cake on the shirt of a kid, telling him frightening stories, claiming he is lying when he isn’t, is pure evil.
Had it been done by some other character, it could be attributed to the fact that she doesn’t have a child of her own, but Tara isn’t an ordinary character, she is steps ahead of the other person and that’s why her end should be exemplary. She shouldn’t be happy because of her devious nature and ideally, the sooner her act is caught up, the better for the others.
Despite of the Pandemic, 2020 proved to be a lucky year for many!
