A trailblazer of her time, a fearless mogul, and the true ‘Sultana’ of Pakistan’s entertainment industry, Sultana Siddiqui has proven that she is the ultimate boss-woman.
And why do we say so? Her success story speaks volumes of her passion, hard work, and determination, proving that she has worked her way diligently up the ladder over the years. Today, she is here to stay and here to rule. In fact, she has helped the industry grow by leaps and bounds, for which she has also been bestowed the third-highest honour and civilian award, the Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 2020 and Pride of Performance award in 2008.
In a recent interview with BBC Urdu, Sultana Apa candidly revealed her own struggle to be a headstrong woman and making her way to the top!
While it was a massive challenge, nothing could stop her rise to victory, and gradually she built the foundations of what today is a vast media empire in the shape of Hum Network.
Scripting her own tale of triumph. Sultana Siddiqui kick started her career with television in the 1970s and, graduating to directing dramas in the 1990s, today she is the proud President of Hum Network – the only media company in Pakistan to be listed on the Karachi Stock Exchange.
From Hum TV, being the largest broadcasting channel in Pakistan, to the booming extension of Hum News, Masala TV, Hum Sitaray, Hum Mart, and Hum Films, Sultana has been juggling it all with style and aplomb! What’s more, she revealed in her interview that she had invested in the indenting business and the sale of heavy machinery with various companies before joining PTV.
There were daunting trials to defeat. Be it overcoming depression after her marriage, managing motherhood as a single parent, or paving her way in a patriarchal society, Sultana Apa went through it all overcoming hurdles heroically. She set up an office at her home so that her children would not be neglected.
In her own words, she explains her journey: “Being a woman is a big challenge. It is like walking on the tip of a spear. And if you have children, then it’s an added responsibility. In our society and even outside this country, if you are a woman, you have to prove yourself time and time again. If we are working mothers, we have to prove that we are a good parent. And when we are career-oriented, we have to work twice as hard as men to finally get accepted.”
When Sultana was trying to launch her channel, other big channels wanted her to join them. “I had no idea that I could eventually begin such a great channel. But I was always certain that I would begin a platform that would be different from the rest. It would not be inspired by Indian dramas and would have my own content. I got discouraged a lot by the people on the outside. But my family encouraged me a lot. And together, with the help of my children and daughter-in-law, we made it happen!”
Ensuring her perpetual growth, Sultana prospered from selling private productions while working in PTV to lay the foundation of HUM with her son Duraid and daughter-in-law, Momina.
But even after serving decades in this industry, the iconic lady tells BBC that “The journey has just begun!”. The challenges she faced as a career-oriented female is reflected in the stories aired on Hum TV. However, the interviewer ‘Nazish’ popped the question that she seldom witnesses power-packed characters like Sultana Siddiqui in drama on channels. The go-getter was quick to remind her of the inspirational women avatars in Zindagi Gulzar Hai, Humsafar, Kankar, etc. that eventually concluded with empowering females becoming beacons of light for the whole nation.
“I believe that it is an obligation on me that If I have started a story on a massive platform, then I have to impart a social issue or a lesson in dramas that can help in the uplifting of my society.
“I don’t depict household politics in my stories. While I showed Zindagi Gulzar hai, I also showed the mother-in-law. The same was in Humsafar and later on the characters corrected themselves. I loved Kankar and how in the end the mother-in-law imparts a meaningful message. These dramas are from our society only and we have to depict these tales that are extracted from our society.”
The BBC highlighted how Sultana Apa humbly asked the scribe to teach her how to take a selfie without any hesitation. In fact, she revealed that she often sits with the younger children at home to learn new technical things.
But even more, thought-provoking was the message that she gave to budding working women! “Forget that you are a woman in a man’s world. Take care of yourself when you go out in society. Stop pitying yourself. Be confident in your work and be a perfectionist so that no one can put you down. Enjoy your field to the fullest!”
Our industry is indeed blessed to have this leading light, a driving force and the face of Hum. She has left no stone unturned in heading the network and ensuring that quality content is produced throughout the network’s avant-garde 16 years of success.
