“We’re changing and we’re improving,” Ali Rehman talks about Pakistan’s entertainment industry

Main Khayal Hoon Kisi Aur Ka is a soft romantic-drama which revolves around the sacrifice of love, a broken relationship, a weak man tied by societal pressures, a suffering woman who takes the bait and an oblivious individual who at first breaks them up only to bring them together at the end.

Spotlight spoke to one of its lead characters, Ali Rehman Khan, to know more about the drama and his role in it.

How this character is different from the characters you have done before?

Ali: Zaryaab is a very responsible man. He’s very mature elder son and elder brother. He’s adopted – so he feels the burden as well as the appreciation of the family. Right now, I can only say that there’s a lot of layers to this character, which I really enjoyed playing and hope audience will enjoy it too.

What makes you sign this project?

Ali: it was very different and engaging. I thought the storyline would be something people would enjoy.

Secondly the team behind the project was also a reason why I signed on. And of course how can I forget that it was a Hum TV’s project and I have a very close affiliation with Hum, it’s very close to my heart.

How do you and Hareem bond with each other from the first project till now?

Ali: I don’t think it’s very hard to bond when you’ve got likeminded people working on a likeminded project.

“When you have no hang-ups with each other, when you’ve known each other for so long. The energy is very positive, and the idea is to have fun and not take yourselves too seriously all the time.”

We’ve all known each other for a very long time so there’s no question of not getting along with each other.

How is it working with newcomers?

Ali: Newcomers always bring a certain amount of energy. They always bring their 200% and it makes me want to give my best as well.

I really enjoy mentoring them too. I remember when I was a newcomer in the industry, I’d always soak up any and all advice that came my way from the seniors. So I’d like to pay it forward.

“I like to advise newcomers on how to take on certain roles, I really enjoy working with their energy and their motivation to work hard.”

Films and dramas industry are changing for good, if yes/no then why?

Ali: Of course! we’re changing and we’re improving. The writing is improving, the stories are improving.

Our dramas are evolving and we have issue-based dramas which are also very encouraging to see. We’re taking our jobs even more seriously than ever before, there is new technology, new studios and sounds and new equipment being used as well. It’s a very exciting time for our entertainment industry. I hope it keeps on evolving and it doesn’t stay stagnant. Because we have to keep improving on what we’re doing.
