As the Sixth Hum Awards in Toronto inch closer, we take a look at the best female actresses nominated this year. Although we know that award for the best actress will likely keep people scrambling to guess until the big night.
Sajal Aly as Dr. Zubia in Yaqeen Ka Safar
Written by Farhat Ishtiaq and directed by Shehzad Kashmiri, Yaqeen Ka Safar got really popular with the audiences and as is the case with most of Farhat Ishtiaq’s heroines, they struggle a lot with the patriarchy but do tend to talk back to the ‘man’.

In ‘Zubia’s case, we saw that Sajal beautifully portrayed a girl who was struggling with a troubled past and now had to navigate through a difficult present as well. It was a difficult role and had to be done with a lot of restraint and composure as well as softness and compassion – Sajal, being a great actress that she is – managed to do all of that.
Mawra Hocane as Sammi in Sammi
Mawra’s role in Sammi was a big responsibility as she had to portray a girl running away from the horrible fate of blood marriage (vanni/swara) and had to rebuild her life from scratch in a big city.

A lot of twists and turns come in Sammi’s life but Mawra’s role demanded a certain optimism and candor that Mawra portrayed well in the role.
Kubra Khan as Nazi in Alif Allah aur Insaan
Kubra Khan’s role as Nazi in Alif Allah aur Insaan opposite Mikaal Zulfiqaar was a complete opposite of what she did in Sang e Mar Mar opposite Mikaal Zulfiqaar. As Shireen, Kubra played a docile, soft-spoken girl who simply gave way to what was decided for her.

But in Alif Allah Aur Insaan, she plays a girl who does not care about anyone except herself. She is stubborn and selfish and goes after what she wants without any guilt. In an interview, Kubra said that she is not at all like Nazi so we give her kudos to performing a role that was not like her in any way.
Ushna Shah as Reena/Rani in Alif Allah aur Insaan
Ushna Shah was a remarkable sight especially as Rani. Her unkempt hair, yellowed teeth, dirty clothes and soiled skin all convinced the viewer that she is street beggar and not the glamorous actress that we often see her as. For her effort to portray a difficult, troubling role, Ushna definitely deserves a place in the nominations.

She becomes “Reena” and then becomes a mother after which she suffers and faces more difficulty despite materialistically achieving what she wants in life. This is definitely one of Ushna’s finest roles.
Sajal Ali as Sassi in O Rangreza
Sassi was not an easy role. She was crazy, she was intelligent, she was sane and she was commanding. This was not a typical role that we see on television, she was a major departure from the weepy, crying damsel in distress formula that we usually see. Sajal gave life to the role and amplified the complexity of this role with her performance.

Whenever Sassi would talk back or stand up to the system, you felt for her and rooted for her. Her quick quips, madcap laughter and vulnerable pleas were one of the many reasons why O Rangreza was a smash hit.
Armeena Khan as Hira in Daldal
Armeena Khan’s role as Hira in Daldal had an interesting graph. While the role started with some typicality, an in-love heroine, ready to sacrifice everything for the guy she is about to marry, the role slowly graduated into someone who had a different sort of courage and did not stand for many wrongdoings against her.
Hira’s character was given likeability and relatability by Armeena’s strong and convincing performance and the series of scenes where Hira snaps and takes control of the situation were mixed with hilarity and excitement. Hira’s character consisted of a range of emotions that Armeena Khan fulfilled to perfection.
