“From the city of lights, along with my young team, Syed Arfeen welcomes the viewers of HUM News. With the passion of innovation in the field of investigative journalism, we will bring the stories of youth, minorities and women empowerment,” This was the first live introductory remarks at the launching of news channel of HUM Network by Arfeen, Bureau Chief, Karachi, HUM News.
“For me, leaving the largest media channel of Pakistan was a tough decision but the name of HUM made it easier.”
Adding more, Arfeen said, I am honored to be the youngest bureau chief of the metropolis amongst my peers. The team of Karachi bureau comprises of young reporters, cameramen, non-Linear-editors (NLEs), technicians and engineers — young blood putting their best in the field where viewers have a choice of dozens of other news channels at a click.
The newly launched channel is following the precedent that was set by the flagship channel – HUM Entertainment. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HUM Network Duraid Qureshi considers HUM News as the most ambitious project with an aim to articulate dreams and aspirations of the 21st century Pakistan and to raise the bar of broadcast journalism through factual, objective, balanced and fair coverage.
HUM News is focusing mainly on the most neglected issues of society such as women empowerment, youth and minorities affairs.
In Pakistan, the news media focuses on civic and social issues but it addresses only grievances, protests and complaints mostly. Little coverage is given to the processes by which these issues are being resolved or can be resolved.
The focus is on visibility and the obvious manifestation of the problem. These channels are lacking in identification of news events and news processes. In a news event, you just need a camera and place it in front of a building which is burning and you have “News”.
News processed is definitely harder work, meaning how the news came into being, the circumstances behind the story and ultimately the proposed solution. Here investigative journalism plays an important role which requires patience, investigative skills and sensitivity but this aspect of the journalism is over shadowed by the news events.
Prominent writers and former Information Minister Javed Jabbar says there is a separation of the role of the proprietor and the professional manager which you only find in newspapers.
“The distinction between a news media proprietor’s view of what is newsworthy and a news professional view in this respect has unfortunately merged because worldwide news media editors also suffer from misconception. It is like an intellectual decease which defines only that bad news is good news and this affliction has become so rampant that it distorts and reduces the ability of news media to recognize what is truly newsworthy” he explained while commenting about the news content being aired on Pakistani news channels.
It is a fact that most news channels here lack the office of an editor who professionally runs news department. Mr Jabbar also believes that the excessive influence of advertising and ratings also shape content, and this is being allowed because of the news media owner’s interests and the indiscriminate increase in the number of channels. “The proprietors of news media are the ultimate policy makers of content except for a few newspapers”, he defined.
In the last decade, dozens of news channel licenses were distributed without regard to the qualification and eligibility of news media proprietors, the availability or training or capacity building of professional journalists in broadcast media and the necessary stress required on ethics.
However, the news staff sitting in newsrooms monitors the screen of other news channel instead of doing their own stories. And, at this point in time HUM News stepped in the battlefield aiming to dig out investigative stories that are destroying the social fabric of the society.
Keeping in view the tag line “aagay ki soch”, the Karachi Bureau has reported several success stories of youth, women and minorities. The camera of HUM News is reaching out to the common man of Karachi and reporting the plight that he is in.
HUM News is thus paying special attention to the data-based-journalistic stories. This helps in explaining the problem and with the help of relevant data collected painstakingly ultimately gives a better understanding of the issue to our viewers.
HUM News is not only striving to give hope to our society but also revamping the Pakistan news industry by objective reporting methods.
