He might look like a kid but there is a sensible head on Azaan Sami Khan’s young shoulders.
At 24, he is one of the youngest music composers to have their name in the credits of a film. His father Adnan Sami Khan was 24 as well when he composed the soundtrack of Sargam which is easily the most popular soundtrack of last 20 years.
With Parwaaz Hai Junoon, Azaan finally makes his film debut as a music composer and hopes to take forward the legacy of his parents – Adnan Sami Khan and Zeba Bakhtiar – as well as pay tribute to his grandfather Arshad Sami Khan who was a decorated fighter pilot in the 60s and the 70s.
Spotlight met with Azaan Sami Khan on the day the trailer of his upcoming film was launched and spoke to him on everything filmi.
Doesn’t it bother you that people compare you with your father?
Of course not! I am one of those people who are proud of my parents and am not on the mission to change my legacy. The day the audience accepts me, that day my parents will be proud of me.
I don’t think much about that because that’s an added pressure, but yes, I try not to disappoint them and if in doing that, I have to go the extra mile, I will.
None of your compositions have been released to the public; how do you think makers of Parwaaz Hai Junoon got to know about your talent?
Momina bhabi (Momina Duraid) is like a godmother to me because she knows our family. Yes, I might not have released anything but that’s the perk of being born in the industry. You get the first chance through people who know you and it is up to you to avail that ‘one’ chance.
At first, she asked me for one song – the romantic one that was finally sung by Atif Aslam. After that, she gave me the Academy song that has been rendered by newcomer Mustahsan. She must have been impressed by the effort because on the whole, I composed four of the five songs from the soundtrack, with the fifth one being done by Shuja bhai (Shuja Haider).
How was the experience of working with such talented singers?
It was an absolute pleasure because every music composer dreams of the kind of singers I have had in my first film. We have Atif Aslam and Zeb Bangash followed by Jabar Abbas, Mustahsan Khan and Zamad Baig who are all brilliant in their own way.
Being the son of a famous singer/musician, you must have had thought about singing too?
I will sing when I will think I am ready; right now, I am not. My father and mother both have advised me that ‘you can do it, doesn’t mean you should’ and that’s why I want to first concentrate on composing music and will later think about my other passions like singing, acting and eventually, direction.
What made you produce 021 when you were barely out of your teens?
As I said, acting is my passion but my mother wanted me to co-produce 021 with her so that I understand how things work in the industry. I got to learn a lot during the making of the film and by the time it was completed, I knew the importance of being on time, how things work in the industry and how to make decisions when problems arise. It taught me that when an actor is late by an hour, it changes the dynamics of the production as you have to stay back and complete the work of twelve-hour shifts in thirteen hours.
You have to pay the crew extra, know about the load shedding schedule, manage the cast and ensure that things work out well at the end of the day. I am not sad that the film didn’t do as well as we expected because had it become a monstrous hit, I might not have ventured into other areas of filmmaking.
You spent some time in Mumbai too … how was the experience?
Working as an Assistant Director in Karan Johar’s upcoming film Kalank was a great experience. The cast of the film has the best actors of two generations namely Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt etc. and watching them come prepared on the set was a learning experience. Varun is a young guy but he knows what’s at stake and that’s why he was hardly ever late on the set.
Who gives you tips and who scolds you – mother or father?
I am glad that I have supportive parents; they both listen to my work and give me tips that I take as advice – Abba’s tips are more technical whereas Amma’s advice is usually philosophical. But they both are constructive ones which is why I listen to them and try to improve.
Name your most favorite Adnan Sami Khan song?
I want to name not one but two songs – Pyar Bina from Sargam and Kasam from his album Teri Kasam. Whenever I am down, I listen to the latter and feel better.
What’s next for Azaan Sami Khan?
First of all, I want to make music important for the generation; we are not producing quality stuff and that’s why people are made to like substandard music. I want to remix some of my father’s songs one day because they are still relevant and would sound great with new technology. I am also writing a film that will go on the floors later this year, details of which I will announce later. I also have other offers to compose songs for films which I will consider and decide after Parwaaz Hai Junoon is released.
