‘Kyun Nikala’ will be staged no matter who forms the government: Anwar Maqsood

Anwar Maqsood is making a comeback to the theatres after more than 3 years but he hasn’t lost his wit and charm with which he has been entertaining the audience for the last 50 years.

Anwar Maqsood claims that Kyun Nikala is not about Nawaz Sharif but about a Bengali servant at a PML N leader who is sacked after 3 decades of service. ‘Had Nawaz Sharif not uttered the Kyun Nikala line, my play would have been Kyun Nikala because it is exactly what the servant is asking in the play.’

What made the veteran writer return to the theatre and Kopykats Productions remains the million-dollar question.

‘I wrote 6 plays for Kopykats Productions from Sawa 14 August to Pawnay 14 August, Aangan Terrha to Haaf Playt and later Dharna and Siachen … but in the last couple of plays, they deviated from my script which is something not even the great Mohsin Ali or Mohammad Nisar Hussain would do. So, I decided to take a break after which Dawar and Co. did two plays that didn’t do well. Dawar is a good director and I couldn’t see him suffer monetary losses; that’s why I decided to write a simple play for him and hence Kyun Nikala was conceived.’

Dawar Mehmood is also elated at the return of the maestro and hopes to match people’s expectations as well.

‘It is always a treat to work with Anwar Maqsood and this time is no different. In fact, it is more nerve-wracking because we know people expect a lot from us and that’s what makes us both a little nervous. Let me tell you one thing though – Anwar Maqsood in form is a combination of Majid Khan, Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara combined and he is in his supreme form here.’

The play will be staged from 10th August 2018 and will feature mostly new actors, just like Kopykats’ last couple of plays.

‘I believe in going with new actors and making superstars out of them. We will go with an entirely new cast and hopefully, they will do as well as the last batch of actors we introduced in Anwar Maqsood plays.’

And finally, Dawar Mehmood spoke about the standard of theatre which in his opinion has gone up, contrary to popular belief.

‘The standard of theatre is going up as more people are coming out with plays, however, the content is limited which is something we need to change. Internationally, 18-20 writers come up with an original script collectively but here, we have only one writer who adapts someone else’s script into a local stage play. Except for Anwar Maqsood, no one comes up with original plays and that’s what lacks in our theatre drama. The more the original, the better!’
