My favorite co-star is Hareem Farooq: Ali Rehman Khan

Ali Rehman Khan is not just a good-looking face when it comes to film and TV. The young man from Islamabad has taken the world of entertainment by storm with performances that have helped his career as well as boosted TV and films in the country.

At a time when films were not being made in Pakistan, he appeared in not one but two indie films Gol Chakkar and Slackistan that were followed by dynamic performances on TV. From Rishtay Kuch Adhooray Se in 2013 and Muhabbat Ab Nahi Hogi in 2014 to Diyar-e-Dil the following year, Ali Rehman Khan has been phenomenal in whatever character he has portrayed. After a gap of three years, he finally returns to TV with Main Khayal Hoon Kisi Aur Ka where he is paired opposite his long-time friend and collaborator Hareem Farooq.

We decided to meet the Prince Charming of film and TV and ask him about his past, present and future for the benefit of his ever-growing number of fans in Pakistan and abroad.

Parchi was not only a hit but your first release as the main lead. How was the experience?

ARK: The experience was phenomenal; to be honest it was a lot of pressure because of the huge cast that also had Usman Mukhtar, Ahmed Ali Akbar, Shafqat Khan, Hareem Farooq and Shafqat Cheema.

Two of your films Gol Chakkar and Slackistan were not screened for various reasons and it wasn’t until Janaan that you were introduced to cinema audience in Pakistan. Was there ever a time where you felt that maybe you weren’t made for films?

ARK: I never felt that despite the fact that Slackistan was banned and Gol Chakkar was never released. However, being part of Janaan was one of the better things in my career as it was my first cinematic release; Parchi came earlier this year and I am thankful that the audience loved my character as well as the movie.

You have worked in dramas as well as films; where do you find yourself more comfortable?

ARK: My love of being on screen has been with films. Ever since I was a kid I wanted to be on the big screen. TV is an added advantage as it has a huge market both at home and internationally due to online streaming.

People still recognize you from Diyar-e-Dil where you played Abid Ali’s younger son Suhaib. How difficult was it to play young-to-old in front of so many seasoned actors?

ARK: It was nerve-wracking, to be honest. My role was basically based on the experience of how we see our elders; how we perceive them and learn from how they treat us. It was all from observation and I must mention my uncle here because I took my inspiration from him.

Tell us something about your new drama “Main Khayal Hoon Kisi Aur Ka” which is your comeback play on TV after three years?

ARK: We’re trying to keep the mystery up by not revealing too much. But I can say that it’s my return to TV and my fans will not be disappointed. It’s a project that caters to the needs of the audience and is not the typical story that we usually see on our TV screens.

What character do you play in it and how different will it be from your other roles?

ARK: I play Zaryab which is different from my previous roles. Unlike in Janaan and Parchi, here I’m playing a mature character. And that’s all I can say without revealing much about the role.

Not many people know that you were working for the United Nations the last few years and must have declined many roles due to your job abroad. Which one was the hardest one to reject?

ARK: There were a few roles I didn’t want to reject and one of them was in the recently released Cake. That was the hardest one to let go. It was a phenomenal film and Asim Abbasi did a really good job writing and directing it. I regret not being able to do that the most.

Who is your favorite co-star and why?

ARK: Of course, my favorite co-star is Hareem Farooq as I really enjoy working with her because it’s always a pleasure working with someone who has a lot of chemistry and purity.

Who are your inspirations in the field of acting?

ARK: I have many inspirations in the field of acting; every actor these days inspires me. Some of my inspirations are Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt and Jennifer Lawrence to name a few. Observing acting is my favorite pastime.

Do you watch Pakistani films in cinemas, if yes then which one is your favorite besides your films?

ARK: I try to make it possible to watch all the Pakistani films in cinemas because if I am not able to supporting industry then I’ve no right to ask others to do so. I actually really enjoy and look forward to watching a Pakistani film in the cinema. Apart from my films including Janaan, Yalghaar and Parchi, I really enjoyed Khuda Kay Liye, Bol, Na Maloom Afraad, Jawani Phir Nai AniPunjab Nahi JaungiWaar and so on.

And what would be your advice to youngsters wanting to take up acting as a profession?

ARK: To those who want to take up acting as a profession, they should go study acting, get into theatre troupe, do comedy sketches and believe in themselves. They shouldn’t be shy because they are very unique! Remember there are no shortcuts because the success you get from hard work is long-lasting. Be patient and show the world who you are and no one would be able to stop you from succeeding.

Tell us something about your future projects?

ARK: Well, there is something in the pot in films. We are going to start this year!
