Making a film on any branch of the military is a tedious job but the makers of Parwaz Hai Junoon must be commended for trying something that hadn’t been done in five decades.
The film has a cast to die for with handsome hunks like Hamza Ali Abbasi, Ahad Raza Mir, and Shaz Khan, and drop-dead gorgeous beauty like Hania Aamir and Kubra Khan to pull youngsters towards cinema this Eid.
Let’s analyze their characters before you decide to buy the ticket and be part of a historical journey that gives tribute to the defenders of Pakistan.
The Guys
Hamza Ali Abbasi (Hamza) was the main protagonist of the film who loves to fly high and is proud to be associated with the PAF. He likes to take risks and annoy his captain but since he gets the job done, everyone loves him.
In fact, most of the Houseful board at cinemas is due to Hamza Ali Abbasi who has a huge fan following on social media where he is very vocal about his likes and dislikes. He doesn’t get to fist fight here but uses his plane to destroy the enemy, reminding some of Top Gun that was released 3 decades back.
Shaz Khan’s Nadir is his wingman who gets married during the film but has no idea about love because all he cares about is flying. The talented actor looks the part and even went through a rigorous training to get the feeling of flying a plane on screen. Ahad Raza Mir makes his debut appearance in a film as Saad who is a mixture of both Safeer and Faraz from Shoaib Mansoor’s evergreen Sunehrey Din.
Not only does he love one of the cadets but he is angry on others who try to impress her, just like Sikander Vincent’s Rashid who does a Gulsher in the film, a role that was made popular by real-life Army officer Qasim Khan in both Sunehrey Din and Alpha, Bravo, Charlie. As the son of a military cook, he comes a long way to bag accolades and makes others look bad, especially people like Shafaat Ali’s Zaid who only applied for the PAF to impress his girlfriends. He provides the comic factor and one hopes that in coming days, he gets a better, bigger and meatier role in films so that he can make use of his impersonation skills to the fullest.
The Girls
There are hardly any girls in the film which is exactly how it is in the PAF – Hania Aamir plays the lead role of Sania whose Junoon is to be in the Parwaaz, hence the name of the film. She comes on screen as one of the most beautiful actresses but due to confusing timelines, the audience couldn’t relate to her character and its growth.
She does add color to the frame and the young boys out there will definitely be hoping to watch the film on the big screen because of her. Kubra Khan’s Fiza plays her elder sister who is married to Nadir and it would have been a little better had she got more scenes in the film. She is a talented actress, something she has proved by standing her ground in Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2 that is also in the theatres.
Then there were the gorgeous looking Sabeena Syed & Rachel Viccaji who didn’t have many dialogues but were used as eye candy especially the former who has potential to make it big in coming days.
The Cameos
Asif Raza Mir, Marina Khan, Shamoon Abbasi, Hina Khawaja Bayat, Adnan Jaffar, Rasheed Naz, Laila Zuberi, Arjumand Azhar and Farhan Ally Agha added magic to the screen.
Each and every veteran actor added quality to the screen with their presence be it Asif Raza Mir as the stubborn father, Marina Khan as the reluctant widow of an Air Force Shaheed or Adnan Jaffar and Shamoon Abbasi as the Academy instructors.
Their roles were limited to a handful of scenes each but they were in characters, engaging the audience by using their vast experience. These are the people who made the Air Force’s return to films a memorable event and one hopes that next year’s Sherdil will also boast of such cameos to make the audience go and watch the film.
