Anwar Maqsood is back with Kyun Nikala and like his previous collaborations with Dawar Mehmood’s Kopykats Productions, he delivers a hit that can’t be missed.
The play tackles all the issues that are prevailing in Pakistan and takes place in the first half of 2018 when Nawaz Sharif’s troubles start and Imran Khan’s end. It is about a Chaudhry sahib who is a die-hard PML N supporter and how he tackles the approach by workers of other parties ahead of the General Elections. His confidante is his Bengali servant who saves him from other problems making the audience laugh like hell.
Let’s analyze the 4 factors that make you want to watch the play being shown to packed houses at the Arts Council.
Sajid Hasan as Chaudhry
No one else could have played the role better than someone who actually contested the General Elections this year and lost. Sajid Hasan reunites with Anwar Maqsood after more than 25 years and the magic they last created in Sitara Aur Mehrunisa is back with their reunion. Sajid Hasan delivers an excellent performance marking his return to the commercial stage after a handful of years, his last play being Alyy Khan’s Aapki Sonia.

As the Chaudhry, he is on stage for the greatest number of time and shows the typical mentality of a feudal lord turned politician who neither had the will nor the guts to serve the people who elected him. The way he spoke, the way he hid from his wife and the way danced during his performance will surely make you laugh and reestablish him as one of the finest actors of our generation.
Mohsin Ejaz
Anwar Maqsood has used Bengali characters in his play as a side role – Mojiz Hasan and Yasir Hussain played that to perfection in earlier plays. However, Mohsin Ejaz’s performance ranks alongside the other two as he plays Mujeeb who has been working at the Chaudhry’s for over 30 years and knows his master inside out.
His perfect timing was the key to his success and the lines that he delivered to the audience (disguised as Khalayi Makhlooq) were commendable. He was present on the stage for as long as Sajid Hasan and was amazing in his dialogue delivery, mannerisms, and taunts that seemed to be coming from a Bengali who chose to stay back in Pakistan after 1971.
Our premiere show gets its first standing ovation! What are you guys waiting for?! #KyunNikala

Dawar The Director
Dawar Mehmood bounces back with a hit after disappointments in Bananistan and Hua Kuch Yun and why wouldn’t he have succeeded now that he has his lucky charm Anwar Maqsood alongside him. Although he is a brilliant actor himself, Dawar directed the cast to perfection and only the person who has attended the rehearsal knows how strict he is behind the stage.
This is Dawar Mehmood. He’s the director of our play. He’s almost always found wearing a pair of pyjamas and slippers with messy hair. He dressed up for the show. Be like Dawar.

To execute well-written lines by Anwar Maqsood is a challenge that someone who shares a good rapport with him can do and Dawar is one such person. One mustn’t be confused between the huge gaps between their ages but commend them because An Anwar Maqsood Play needs A Dawar Mehmood Production to make it big, the way he wants.
Anwar Maqsood The Man with The Golden Pen
He knows exactly what the audience wants and that’s why the legendary Anwar Maqsood waited three years for this play that came out wonderfully, especially at a time when the standard of the theatre was going down.
The man with the golden pen making his final changes before the premiere tonight. Karachi waalon, you don’t wanna miss this one! #KyunNikala #AnwarMaqsood

The way he sugarcoats his words is something only a seasoned playwright can do; he mentions pop culture references in his play as if they were something created for him only, such as the PTI million tree project, using mangoes as a bargaining chip and the multiple shadi fiasco of PML N.
There is a lot more to the play where he will make you laugh out loud wholeheartedly with the remarks the servant makes on his master and the replies he gets from the Chaudhry who is in-demand before the elections due to PML N’s stupidity than his own political acumen.
