The last 2 years have seen the rise of TV dramas that tackle important issues of our society and educate the audience in a subtle way.
Be it Udaari, Khuda Mera Bhi Hai or Khaani, they all were derived from real-life stories and became blockbusters because of their take on issues that were deemed too bold for TV.
Baandi comes out as the latest addition to such plays where ill-treatment of maids is highlighted as an evil that needs to be curbed in our society. Like Khuda Mera Bhi Hai and Khaani, the writer behind this serial is Asma Nabeel who believes that we can bring a change in the society through meaningful dramas.
When asked about the basic idea behind her plays, the advertising executive turned filmmaker revealed that the stories she writes about are successful because somehow, they are linked to reality.
‘Baandi revolves around a very important issue in our society, the treatment of maids and servants in our households. They are treated really badly when they should be respected as they are earning a livelihood for their family.’
‘Usually, families with no one to look after them send their girls to do household chores in the villages (and even in the cities) and they are mistreated by all, which is a practice this play condemns,’ Asma added.
Asma Nabeel has so far had a great 2018 – her play Khaani became the most talked about drama of the year while she also debuted as a film writer with Maan Jao Na.
She also got to pen a song for Kajol-starrer Helicopter Eela that will be making it to the cinemas later this year. However, she feels content by taking society evils head on and wants the viewers to get educated through her projects.
‘We must realize that they (Maids) are human beings as well and we don’t own them as that’s exactly what we think. We should consider them needy and think of their poor parents who have no option but to send their children to work at a young age. The play also tries to raise the issue of land grabbing etc. in villages and give that side of the story as well, because no one talks about that too.’
Baandi features Aiman Khan and Muneeb Butt in the lead while Yasir Hussain will play the antagonist for the first time in his career.
Then there is Hina Dilpazeer, Noman Masood, Hajra Yasmeen and Kamran Jeelani while Ahmed Kamran who has Zara Yaad Kar, Karb and Na Kaho Tum Mere Nahi to his credit, calls the shot.
Asma Nabeel – Writer
While talking about the difference between her last two plays and Baandi, Asma said that she tries hard to make her characters strong and hopes that the audience praises her play just like they did before.
‘I try to highlight issues so that the drama brings some objectivity as well. We have so many issues to highlight and even more people to educate because people don’t even know that what they are doing is wrong. I try to keep the screenplay different from other TV dramas and make it closer to reality and maybe that’s why the audience remembers the serials more than others.’
