Olomopolo Media’s latest offering Likhay Jo Khatt Tujhay may have concluded its Karachi run after 3 shows but it was an excellent three-day event that was not to be missed.
Nominally priced at Rs. 1000 per ticket and performed in the Zia Mohyeddin Theatre at National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA), it featured dramatized reading of Urdu Literature gems and although only 2 actors sat on the stage (with 3 musicians who provided the break and background music), the audience didn’t feel bored for a minute in the nearly 2-hour long performance.
Spotlight analyzes the highlights of the event and what made it a must watch affair that too on a usually busy weekend.
Sania Saeed’s perfect expressions and rendition
All those who have been following TV and theatre in Pakistan know that Sania Saeed is immensely talented and a gifted actress; she even surprised her die-hard fans by portraying renowned writer/poet Amrita Pritam, Safia Jan Nisar Akhtar, ABC and Nawabzada Fakhr-e-Alam Tusi all in the same sitting.
Her vocal and facial expressions were different every time she read a different letter showing to the current generation of actors how it is done. She was melancholic when Amrita, happy-go-lucky when ABC, sad-but-content when Safia and bureaucratic when FA Tusi. There was also a reading from Shafiq ur Rehman’s Mazeed Himaqatein where she enacted the role of a fiancée who wrote to her bride-to-be to clear the air regarding some ‘serious’ misunderstandings.
Tajdar Zaidi’s amazing command over his vocals
No one but Tajdar Zaidi (of Theatre Walay) could have complimented Sania better because he was from the same age bracket and had excellent command over his diction, expression, and emotion. He was a prick when the letter demanded that in Colonel Mohammad Khan’s Tusi Ka Tota while he was romantically confused as BCD in Fikr Taunsvi’s letter exchange; he read one of Josh Malihabadi’s letters on stage and captivated the audience whereas engaged the audience as part-time host as well who gave introductions and announced breaks.

A throwback to the Golden Age of Urdu Literature
Be it Tusi Ka Tota or Mangetar Ke Naam or real-life letters of literary giants, the play did more service to Urdu Literature than many theatre plays combined in Karachi. The many youngsters in the audience who weren’t aware of these big names exited the theatre keeping in mind the names of their next Google Search that will hopefully end up in a Book purchase. Everyone clapped when a humorous or a sarcastic monologue was rendered on stage and that’s what makes theatre the best medium to spend your leisure time as you can appreciate the brilliance, instantly.
Music that kept the audience engrossed
And then there was the live music featuring Wajih Nizami, Shahdab Younis & Irfan Khan who kept the audience entertained with their jugalbandi and slow music in the background. Priced at just 1000 rupees, the play was an amazing way to get entertained as it brought romance, humor, music, and sadness together. Director Kanwal Khoosat must be commended for a job well done and one hopes that they return to Karachi soon, with bigger, better and beautiful projects.
