You may have not seen him act before in a TV drama but vocalist turned actor Haroon Shahid has been there for quite some time.
Just last year he made his film debut with Shoaib Mansoor’s Verna opposite Mahira Khan and impressed all as the husband of a rape victim.
Now the lead singer of SYMT has switched to TV with his debut drama serial Tajdeed e Wafa where he is paired with Naveen Waqar of Humsafar fame.
The play was aired earlier this week and people loved Haroon’s natural acting and soft-spoken nature. Spotlight had a chat with the actor on his TV debut, his experience of working for the small screen and his future endeavors.
How was the experience of acting in a drama serial on TV after being part of an emotionally charged film?
TV isn’t easy as many people think and considering I am very new to it, it will take time to adjust to the medium. The workload is there if you compare it to a film; in Verna, I had 30 to 40 dialogues max while here the number of dialogues are like 20 times more.
Drama on TV is a switch from 160 minutes to 1000 and I am getting used to the change. Yes, it is quite challenging in terms of acting because a lot more is required, a lot more is expected. It’s tough but when you become used to it, and I hope that in time it will for me as well.
The trend of turning actor from singers is not new in Pakistan, but why is it so popular?
The sad state of our music industry is responsible for that; I am not the first singer to turn to acting, nor the last and until and unless things become better, the trend will continue.
My heart is still into composing songs and making music but then I have to make a living too. As a musician and songwriter, we were in our zone where everything was done by us but in TV and films, you are an actor who gets directed by someone else and deliver dialogues written by someone other than you. It’s a massive switch but good for my creative process.
Your latest play Tajdeed e Wafa has a star cast; how helpful was that for someone like you who is making his debut on TV?
This is just my second project as an actor; I need to understand the basics of TV which I am doing by observing my colleagues.
There is Abid Ali sahib who is a legend of our industry followed by the extremely talented Naveen Waqar as well as the dynamic Ahmed Ali and Ainy Jaffri. These actors have done over 10 to 12 successful projects before this drama and that’s what makes them good at what they do. As for me, I am trying to differentiate between filmi acting and dramayi acting; the acting in Verna was dramayi whereas in Tajdeed-e-Wafa I try to keep it natural. I haven’t been an avid TV drama viewer so whatever I am doing on screen is ‘not very conventional TV’ as I have never been influenced by it.
Tell us something about the play and what character are you playing in your debut play?
Tajdeed e Wafa is a wonderful project and I opted for it because I believed in it. It has a very unconventional story as there are not one but two parallel stories with Ahmed Ali and Ainy Jaffri playing the first and Naveen Waqar and myself playing the other one.
The first one may seem like a love story but Naveen and my story is the different one. It’s not the usual love story but shows how a family works in reality.
Do you plan to stay in the game as an actor or is it just a one-off experience?
I surely plan to stay here for as long as it’s something I enjoy. However, it totally depends on the audience if they like me or not.
I am a new guy to the TV screen so deserve some leeway but yes, to stay in the race one has to evolve and improve. I have just picked another drama for another TV channel and hopefully will get the hang of it as time progresses. TV is just like any other competitive field where the survival of the fittest is the key; let’s see how fit or unfit I am.
