What is an addictive, thrilling drama without a loathsome and infuriating villain?
Some of the best performances in our favorite dramas this year came from the villains of the plot. Most of these characters made us scream in rage every time they came on screen. The rest were so good at essaying their roles that we almost forgot that we’re supposed to hate them!
All in all, these dastardly characters were rotten to the core and made us yearn to give them a good therapeutic slap in the face, just to make ourselves feel better.
Credit goes to the celebrities who played these baddies, were believable as antagonists and were great at playing a ghastly human on screen.
Check out our list of most hate-able villains of the year that we will continue to despise for a long, long time!
Tahwaar played by Yasir Hussain in Baandi
Rating on the hate meter: Unlimited loathing for this sadistic creep of a ‘Wadera’.
Why he is on our list: Wretched and unafraid to commit the most grisly crimes, the feudal lord ‘Tahwaar’ made us wince with disgust with his every move.
His revolting gaze, unruly demeanor, and sick intentions almost made it unbearable and agonizing to watch him on our screens. So cringe-worthy, we wished that it was possible to skip all his scenes from the whole story.
Tahwaar made Meeru’s life a living nightmare. It was a relief to watch him behind bars, enchained and fallen helpless on his feet. In fact, it was a bigger reassurance when the irate villain takes his own life and gave us the satisfaction that justice was served in its own twisted way.
Yasir Hussain’s character as ‘Tahwaar’ is one of the main reasons that made ‘Baandi’ amongst the most trending dramas of the season. And we were not surprised when he bagged the award for Best supporting actor male in the drama at Kashmir 7th HUM Awards this year.
Ammar played by Ali Rehman Khan in Khaas
Rating on the hate meter: Off the charts- given that he was an absolute devil in disguise!
Why he is on our list: He charms you, fascinates you with his looks and makes you fall in love with him. And when you least expect, he reveals his true, vile colors!
Ammar is that one abominable creature you wished to strangle with your bare hands. So appalling, the audience was overjoyed when Salma, yet another negative character in Khaas, unleashed hell all over his life.
A slick and suave smooth-talker, he made the world believe that he was a born-angel. Yet, it was his wife who was the only witness of his narcissist soul, torture, gas-lighting, and emotional abuse. His verbal-put downs, controlling and bullying behavior identified him as an abuser, one the audience abhorred till the end.
He proved that words can hurt more than wounds and his character made this drama a must-watch for Pakistani men along with women. After all, his misdemeanor imparted messages of how couples should NOT be treating each other in a healthy marriage.
Khaas’s director, Danish Nawaz believes that Ammar truly got what he deserved in the end. Here’s what he had to say:
I think Ammar has gotten what he deserves by marrying someone who has no respect for him and his family. He should realize what he lost because of the decisions he made. He should have found comfort in Saba and should have given her the respect and place that she deserved.
Rehan Chaudhry by Imran Ashraf in Inkaar
Rating on the hate meter: 25 scissor stabs for this guy! After all, he should know the anguish Hajra went through!
Why he is on our list: He is young, wealthy, handsome and charismatic. But there is one problem with Rehan Chaudhry. He will love you to death. LITERALLY!
Creepy, scary and maniacal, Rehan was a rich, stubborn spoiled brat who cannot take ‘no’ for an answer. He believed his wealth, power and influential father could bring the whole world to his knees.
So tenacious, he was not afraid to commit any wicked act to get what he wanted. Not only he tried to sexually assault Hajra, but he also aimed to murder her. Later, he resorted to shaming and harassing her in front of the entire world.
We really believe that he is the real human form of the devil emoji! So much so, we loved the sight of him in chains and shackles in the last episode. We wanted him to suffer and be miserable his whole life. Too bad, Hajra forgave him. Well, she had her reasons!
In an earlier interview with Hum Spotlight, Imran Ashraf talked about how it felt essaying the role of the antagonist, Rehan.
When ‘Inkaar’ was offered to me, I took an instant liking to Rehan Chaudhary because, in his mind, he was always right. He thought that by exposing Hajra he was helping his friend when in fact he was pushing him away. By pursuing Hajra for himself, he was in his mind doing no wrong especially since he thought his friend didn’t deserve her.
What helped me in getting into the skin of the antagonist was my own way of acting which might surprise the readers. When I take on a role, I make up my mind that I was born as that person, the actress who is playing my mother gave birth to me, my onscreen father is my real father and so forth.
Sahir played by Syed Jibran in Ranjha Ranjha Kardi
Rating on the hate meter: Scorching high- given that he deceived Noori, not once but twice!
Why he is on our list: Sahir is the archetypal lecherous playboy, the con artist our mothers and friends warn us against!
He will sway you off your feet, make romantic promises and genuinely pretend to care for you. But the minute you start planning a marital life with him, he will ghost you forever. And you will realize that you have just been made a fool!
That’s exactly what Sahir did with Noori. Our naïve heroine was head over heels in love with him. So much so, she even went to jail for him! However, the self-conceited fellow refused to marry her and doubted her character after she spent the night in prison.
Unfortunately, like an ugly memory, he returned in her life to haunt her of her past. While Sahir aimed again to turn her life upside down, Noori was more than prepared and succeeded in giving him the taste of his own medicine.
We loathed Sahir so much that we wished he would have met a far dreadful end. No doubt, everybody realized his true colors. But that really is a soft punishment for an arrogant fraud like him!
Shakra played by Yumna Zaidi in Ishq Zahe Naseeb
Rating on the hate meter: Negligible, given that, she was sexually assaulted and had her baby taken away from her!
Why she is on our list: A major reason Shakra’s character is on this list is because of Yumna Zaidi’s impeccable effort in the portrayal of this role.
If truth be told, it is very hard to hate Shakra. After all, there are characters far more abominable in Ishq Zahe Naseeb, like Sabeeha and Jehangir.
However, Shakra did play a role in poisoning Sameer’s mind as a child that resulted in his Dissociative Identity Disorder. She planted the seed of a dual personality in him that grew into his alter-ego ‘Sameera’ and made him visualize Shakra after she parts ways with him.
All in all, Shakra had a rebellious and bitter role in the drama. Her negative streak was a direct result of the injustices that happened to her. She was assaulted by Sameer’s father, had to give up her child and had to suffer from Sabeeha’s ire.
Take a bow, Yumna Zaidi! She was born to play this role. Those haunting eyes, eerie smile and vengeful expressions made us disapprove of Shakra, yet understand her pain at the same time.
Arsal played by Ali Kazmi in Jaal
Rating on the hate meter: Very high- after all, he was thick, arrogant and so full of himself.
Why he is on our list: A jealous, insecure and complicated person like Arsal surely deserves to be condemned.
So egotistical, he considered it an insult that his wife works at a higher designation than him in the office they were employed at. Later, he cheated on her and married his wife’s sister, destroying homes and lives in this process. What’s worse, he threw all the family down the drain to fulfill his own greed and whims.
Jaal’s last episode showed our villain being remorseful for leaving his first wife, Esha. But that too to achieve his own desires. Truly, Arsal was a hopeless case!
Ali Kazmi often essays villainous roles and yet again, he stole the spotlight as Arsal. He made the audience fervently detest him and made his character plausible with his power-packed performance.
Mir Farooq Zaman played by Adnan Siddiqui in Ye Dil Mera
Rating on the hate meter: Rising with every passing episode.
Why is he on our list: Mir Farooq Zaman aka Agha Jaan is the toxic, dominating father that has made it to this ranking.
Peppered hair and flaunting a handle-bar mustache, he is pretty suave and vigorous for a single parent of a young girl in her 20’s.
A wealthy tycoon, Mir Farooq is a shady businessman, a definite murderer and extremely abusive towards his second wife, Saira.
We bet he wasn’t very respectful towards his first partner either. It is evident from the plot that he is a man with a deep, dark past and likely to be the reason behind the childhood trauma her daughter suffers from. Too bad, she dotes on him and considers him no less than an idol.
Ye Dil Mera is an on-going drama, but Agha Jaan is slowly unveiling his nefarious nature as the story grows. One thing is for sure, he has a grave secret that he is hiding up his sleeve and it is going to get very ugly for all involved!
