Meet the actors who were on top of their game in 2019

It has been an eventful 2019 for TV dramas in Pakistan, the year began with the magnum opus Aangan and Ranjha Ranjha Kardi and is ending with Ishq Zahe Naseeb, Ye Dil Mera and Ehd-e-Wafa.

However, it has proved to be game-changing for many of the actors too; some took the challenge and shone past others while others went their separate way. We have compiled a list of five actors who grabbed every chance that producers threw at them and came out as victorious, no matter how difficult the role was.

AHAD RAZA MIR

Where you have seen him: Aangan, Ehd-e-Wafa, Ye Dil Mera

For Ahad Raza Mir, 2019 has been wonderful, for he acted in as many as three Hum TV plays – he appeared in Aangan as the guy who falls for his cousin (Mawra Hocane), yet ends up with the other one (Sajal Aly).

Director Ehteshamuddin managed to extract the romantic side of the youngster which prepped him for the other challenge – playing an Army officer in Ehd-e-Wafa who falls in loveAnd while the play is on air and winning hearts, Aehsun Talish’s Ye Dil Mera hit the screens where Ahad is playing a mysterious character, one that has a past and an ulterior motive that will be disclosed to the audience sooner than later.

When asked about Aangan at the start of the year, Ahad said that he wanted to try something Eastern, and you couldn’t get more Eastern than Aangan:

‘In my time as a theatre actor in Canada, I had done Shakespeare and Western plays that were set in the past; I had never done something as Eastern as Aangan so when the play came my way, I considered myself fortunate enough and accepted it. I don’t know anybody from the 1940s and haven’t met someone from whom I can have a clear reference. I chose to stay away from watching any video from that era because that’s how I work, otherwise, it might influence me as an artist.’

ALI REHMAN KHAN

Where you have seen him: Khaas

Ali Rehman Khan kept himself busy in 2019 with a film (Heer Maan Ja) and a very Khaas drama that revolved around his brilliant performance. The actor played an abusive husband to Sanam Baloch’s Saba in the play and although he didn’t beat her, he tortured her with his words. As a sarcastic husband, who became jealous with the passage of time, Ali Rehman Khan was on top of his game.

Unlike the company here that appeared in two or more Hum TV plays this year, Ali Rehman’s only project was enough to get him a place. His altercation with Haroon Shahid’s character in the later episodes of Khaas was one of the best scenes between two rising stars, whereas his sarcastic remarks were detested by both men and women out there.

IMRAN ASHRAF

Where you have seen him: Ranjha Ranjha Kardi, Inkaar, Jaal

Usually, actors give one good performance and lay low for the rest of the year, but Imran Ashraf doesn’t believe in that philosophy. The actor followed one good performance with another one and at one time was appearing in as many as three TV dramas on Hum TV.

He started the year playing the ever-lovable Bhola in Ranjha Ranjha Kardi and while that play was ending, he was changing the face of villainy with Rehan Chaudhary in Inkaar. Both the characters were like chalk and cheese; while he earned sympathy through the former, he was hated by all for the latter. Both Bhola and Rehan Chaudhary got what they deserved on-screen and stood out despite being difficult; a lesser actor would have messed both of them but not Imran Ashraf.

His third drama for Hum TV Jaal had him in a good brother role who shows his strength in later episodes and helped him cap a memorable 12 months. When asked about his ability to switch from one role to another, Imran Ashraf said:

‘I am a guy who is very good at observing others, feeling their pain and above all, portraying it on screen. I am a firm believer that we don’t act on screen but react, and I consider it a key to all my characters and whatever success they have helped me achieve. When Inkaar was offered to me, I took an instant liking to Rehan Chaudhary because, in his mind, he was always right. He thought that by exposing Hajra he was helping his friend when in fact he was pushing him away. By pursuing Hajra for himself, he was in his mind doing no wrong especially since he thought his friend didn’t deserve her.’

He further added, What helped me in getting into the skin of the antagonist was my own way of acting which might surprise the readers. When I take on a role, I make up my mind that I was born as that person, the actress who is playing my mother gave birth to me, my onscreen father is my real father and so forth. That’s what helps me on the sets, be it that of Ranjha Ranjha KardiInkaar or JaalI hope to stay creative like that in the future as well so that my fans will always find my new avatar, different and interesting.’

HAROON SHAHID

Where you have seen him: Tajdeed-e-Wafa, Khaas

Although Tajdeed e Wafa was already on air when the year began, it was his performance as Fakhir in Khaas that helped him carve a separate niche for himself. Yes, we are talking about Haroon Shahid who made a transition to TV last year after working in Shoaib Mansoor’s Verna in 2017.

The singer-turned-actor impressed all with his performance in Khaas opposite Ali Rehman Khan and Sanam Baloch, especially the girls who wanted to have a boyfriend like him. He was the hero of the play, standing tall against an emotionally-abusing husband (played by Ali Rehman Khan) who deserved a good spanking when he was young. When asked about the experience of working in Khaas, this is what Haroon Shahid had to add:

‘Khaas has a number of small lessons that are highlighted in the drama. Over the years, various trivial issues in our society have been normalized under the cloak of innocent jokes. So I think it is an important aspect that the drama highlights how the smallest things, which are uttered as sarcasm, can actually hurt someone.’

SAMI KHAN

Where you have seen him: Inkaar, Ishq Zahe Naseeb

And it was another happening year for Sami Khan who followed his brilliant performances in 2018 with Inkaar and Ishq Zahe Naseeb. While he stood up against Imran Ashraf’s Rehan Chaudhry in the former, he came back strongly after losing his love interest (Sonya Hussyn) to Zahid Ahmed’s Sameer.

Both these characters required him to be at the top of his game as one wrong step would have meant that he was relegated to the supporting character, but that didn’t happen. He came out victorious in Inkaar where Rehan Chaudhry perished while the fate of Ishq Zahe Naseeb is still pending. Sami Khan had a lot to say about his powerful performance in Inkaar as well:

‘In a Zafar Mairaj play, his characters are not just black and white but also grey. He keeps the suspense, reveals characters at his pace and has a backstory for every character be it minor or major.

In Inkaar, he has shown conflict at its best – there are three classes in the play – feudal, bureaucrats and lower middle class. It’s not just a story of a girl and a boy but a play that talks about our social issues. Every character clashed and the audience loved it, and that’s the beauty of a good script and direction. Imran’s Rehan Chaudhry was correct in his mind while my character stood corrected in his.’

ZAHID AHMED

Where you have seen him: Mein Na Janoo, Ishq Zahe Naseeb

Not many actors would go to play a blind character and one suffering from split personality as in two back to back dramas, but Zahid Ahmed would. The import from theatre has been ruling our hearts ever since he switched to TV a few years back, and 2019 turned out to be a defining year for him.

In Mein Na Janoo he plays an Air Force pilot who turns blind and falls in love later, while in Ishq Zahe Naseeb, he plays a young man with a traumatized past, who suffers from a split-personality disorder as well. The character would have become a joke had some other actor been cast in it, as he would surely have crossed the thin line between serious acting and comedy.

However, Zahid Ahmed took it as a challenge and delivered one of the most powerful performances of his career. When asked about how he ended up with the role, this is what he had to say:

‘Ever since I became an actor, my mission is to play characters that no one else is doing and that’s why the audience accepts me as someone who can play both good and bad at ease. While I was working in another Hashim Nadeem play, I had a discussion with him regarding the lack of characters that are different. I told him that I wasn’t getting the kind of scripts I wanted and he roped me into play a Man-Woman character, saying that ‘I want you to play it’.

‘I had no work for 7 months as whatever I got wasn’t that great; in the meantime, I waited for Hashim Sahab to complete the script and the result is now in front of you. It is characters like these that will be remembered for a long time. As for why did I do it, well, all I can say is that I want to do every challenging role that shocks the audience as this role did.’
