Meet the actresses who were on top of their game in 2019

The year 2019 is about to end, but for some of the actors, it’s just the beginning. The beginning of a career that is yet to see its peak, the beginning of a journey the end of which isn’t marked.

From January to December, these six actresses ruled the screen on Hum TV and it seems that they might continue to do so in the coming decade as well. Let’s take a look at these actresses who were on top of their game in 2019, and have a great future ahead as well.

Yumna Zaidi

Where you have seen her: Inkaar, Ishq Zah-e-Naseeb

If 2018 belonged to Darr Si Jati Hai Sila, then 2019 saw the rise of Yumna Zaidi through not one but two dynamic roles.

In Inkaar she played a young girl who was stabbed a dozen times on her wedding day, and after getting justice from the court forgave the stabber; in Ishq Zahe Naseeb she plays Sameer’s illusion, a character that is more on the dark side than on the right one. In both the characters, Yumna Zaidi was simply outstanding; her courtroom scenes as well as that in the hospital in Inkaar would have seemed less impactful had it featured a lesser talented actor, but she excelled in the dramatic sequences.

It wasn’t easy to match up to the level of the very talented Imran Ashraf who stabbed her and her husband-to-be played by the versatile Sami Khan, yet Yumna Zaidi stood with them with her powerful performance. In Ishq Zahe Naseeb, she continues to shock the audience with her villainous character, surprising her fans with her negative side, one they didn’t know existed.

Iqra Aziz

Where you have seen her: Ranjha Ranjha Kardi, Suno Chanda 2

For the second year running, Iqra Aziz has been on top of her game, be it in the super-serious Ranjha Ranjha Kardi or the non-serious Suno Chanda 2. On one hand, she stood her ground opposite the year’s most charismatic performance ‘Bhola’ by Imran Ashraf while on the other hand, she continued to get her way in the second season of Suno Chanda, and kept the audience entertained during Ramadan.

Her upcoming marriage to fellow actor Yasir Hussain would help her scale new heights because not only will it give her a shoulder to bank on, but a supporting husband who also became a star in his own right after struggling in his early days.

Mawra hocane

Where you have seen her: Aangan, Daasi

It was a busy year for Mawra Hocane, who started it with Aangan and is about to end it with Daasi. The role of Aaliya in the former was that of a girl who makes sacrifices in life to help her family in pre Partition days while in the latter, she played a carefree Sunehri who was not just vibrant but also strong-headed. Unlike her colleagues, she chose projects on merit and that’s why she was able to deliver her best performance in both the plays. However, Daasi was too different from her other work and that’s why people are loving it.

When asked why she chose to play a role that she hadn’t attempted before, this is what she had to say:

‘Both Sammi and Aangan revolved around a social cause – one tackled Vani, the other Partition. Both were heavy-duty projects, so yes, when Daasi came to me, it brought a change with it. The plain and simple love story excites me the most’

Moreover she added;

‘The character of Sunehri is very vibrant and full of life and that gave me a chance to experiment. I have been doing compassionate roles for quite some time – from Sanam Teri Kasam to Aangan – where my character cries a lot, likes to keep to herself and support others when they are down. Trust me, such characters drain me out as an individual so by going for Sunehri, I thought maybe I will be able to get some life out of the character and take it with me. There was another reason for doing Daasi – getting a chance to work with Adeel Husain. I couldn’t have left a project with him!’

Sajal Aly

Where you have seen her: Aangan, Yeh Dil Mera

And then there was Sajal Aly, the actress who continues to surprise her fans with every passing drama. Besides Alif on another channel, she had Aangan and Yeh Dil Mera on Hum TV, where she literally made the audience notice her by outshining others.

In Aangan, she had Ahad Raza Mir, Mawra Hocane, Madiha Rizvi, Ahsan Khan, Omair Rana, and others to complete for glory while in Adnan Siddiqui and Ahad Raza Mir were her competition in Yeh Dil Mera. Not only did she stood out in both the plays, giving two of the best performances of her career but also churned out the OST of Yeh Dil Mera, vowing her fans even more. During an interview, when asked why she chose to play Chammi in Aangan when she could have gone for a commercially viable play, this is what the talented actress had to offer:

‘There is a lot to Chammi that you see – but that’s not really her. There are some characters that are who they seem from first glance. Chammi is not such a character; she’s a fractured person from within, despite her bubbly persona. She’s, in fact, quite the opposite of what we see. She has masked her failures and her fears in the outward bravery and loudness that seem to define her – but are not really who or what she is.’

Sanam Baloch

Where you have seen her: Khaas

‘She came, she saw and she conquered’ would be the best way to describe Sanam Baloch’s triumphant return to the channel that made her one of the top actresses in the country.

She did Noorpur Ki Rani, Dastaan, Akbari Asghari, Durr-e-Shehwar and Kankar for Hum TV before graduating to a host of Morning Shows, yet she didn’t forget her roots and when she returned, she made it Khaas. Paired opposite the dynamic Ali Rehman Khan and the talented Haroon Shahid, Sanam Baloch didn’t let them overshadow her. In fact, in what turned out to be her first play on Hum TV in six years became her best since her return to acting.

As a married woman whose husband loves to taunt her with his sarcastic remarks and becomes jealous of her success, she did a brilliant job and had the viewers’ sympathy. The drama didn’t have a happy ending for her character but she managed to prove that you can’t take away acting from a good performer, and she was still better than many.
