2019 – The Year of Lost Stars

Pakistani actor Abid Ali, Hollywood legend Doris Day and Bollywood veteran Kader Khan were some of the stars we said goodbye to during 2019.

They not only left their countless fans saddened with their final act but also left behind a legacy that will keep their names relevant in the coming years. Here’s a look back at those who passed away during the last 12 months and how they would like to be remembered.

Pakistan

It was a sad year for Pakistan’s entertainment industry as a veteran of many TV dramas and films Abid Ali shocked all with his final exit.

The actor who had worked in many Hum TV projects including Bunty I Love You, Dayar-e-Dil, Daldal, Tajdeed e Wafa, Aangan to name a few was not just an actor but a visionary director and a producer who went abroad in the 90s to shoot dramas when that wasn’t a thing. Director Haseeb Hasan believes that had Abid Ali not been part of Dayar-e-Dil as Agha Jaan, the play might not have done that well.

‘Abid Ali was a wonderful actor and an even better person to work with. When I sent him the script for Dayar-e-Dil, he asked me to come over and although he accepted the role, he wanted me to find a house that would suit his character because he felt that the house will play an important role in the play.’

‘He added that he wouldn’t feel relaxed and content until the location was finalized and that’s why we combined a couple of houses in the Northern Areas to come up with his character’s house. He not only was true to his words as he gave one of his best performances in that play mainly because we managed to follow his advice; even today people say that Dayar-e-Dil looked better on-screen because of the locations and due to the superb performance of the Dada Jee. He would surely be missed!’, says Haseeb Hasan.

TV star Roohi Bano who ruled the screen in the 70s and the 80s met a tragic end during 2019; she was suffering from mental illness and wasn’t active for some time, and her death at 67 took everyone by surprise. There was also veteran TV actress Zaheen Tahira who also worked in a couple of films; a PTV veteran, she kept herself busy by graduating from mother roles to grandmother ones and made a name for herself in character acting.  Another veteran actress Safia Kheri breather her last as well in 2019 and although she made a late start to her career as an actress, people remember her because of her authoritative performances in countless dramas.

Then there was veteran playwright Dr. Enver Sajjad who gave over 50 years of his life to theatre and TV in Pakistan. A medical doctor by profession, he ended up acting and writing plays because of his passion and trained many actors of today at NAPA. Veteran TV actor Gulab Chandio who was famous for his character acting and villainous roles also joined his contemporaries in the afterlife but not after leaving a mark with his legacy.

It was the same year when we lost Shehnaz Begum, the nightingale behind Jeevay Pakistan and Sohni Dharti besides many films and TV songs; though she had left singing to follow religion and life in Bangladesh, she was still popular in Pakistan due to her evergreen numbers. Talking of national songs, the lyricist behind Vital Signs Dil Dil Pakistan Nisar Nasiq died due to old age as well; many thought that Shoaib Mansoor was the creator of the song but the PTV producer wrote lyrics after producing Dil Dil Pakistan that had Nisar Nasiq’s magical touch.

Hollywood

A veteran of countless Hollywood classics Doris Day (97) was one of the biggest names to die last year. Hollywood writer, actor Peter Fonda (79) also met his Creator and did Luke Perry (52), the TV star who also appeared in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. Then there was ‘The Mod Squad’ actress Peggy Lipton (72), TV veterans Robert Forster (78), Rip Torn (88) and Air Wolf pilot Jan-Michael Vincent (73) who lost their lives to old age, bad health, and/or natural causes.

There was the Blade Runner villain Rutger Hauer (75), five-time Academy Award nominee Albert Finney (82), Oscar-nominated Michael J. Pollard (80) and TV actor Max Wright from ALF besides former Bond girl from Thunderball Claudine Auger and Ron Leibman (82) who played Rachel Green’s father in Friends who couldn’t make it past 2019. Peter Mayhew, the actor who played Chewbacca in both the original and new Star Wars trilogy also bid farewell to his fans at the age of 74.

Bollywood

In India, it was more or less the same story – former Miss Bombay and leading lady from many 70s and 80s flicks Vidya Sinha (71), Yash Chopra’s regular collaborator and legendary music composer Khayyam (92), dance trainer Veeru Krishnan who appeared in Raja Hindustani Noted comedian Viju Khote (77), veteran actor Shreeram Lagoo (92) were among those who joined Kader Khan as losses of 2019.

Kader Khan who was behind many Amitabh Bachchan classics from the 70s and the 80s died due to prolonged illness at 81 in Canada.
