Stories of 2019 that totally deserve a sequel!

Sequels are very much in fashion these days! They become an awesome way to take the plot forward by showing us the next innings in the lives of characters we once cherished so much.

All popular Netlfix shows return with follow-up stories in the name of seasons and have their fans hooked throughout. In Pakistan, Suno Chanda has been a prime example of this! It returned with a laughter-riot of season 2 this year and was an immense hit like its predecessor.

Similarly, there are more dramas that we want to experience all over again because their tales kept us intrigued while others left us with the impression that their story has more to tell!

Here are a few sequels to our favorite dramas that we want our Pakistani writers and directors to work on:

Khaas

Cast: Ali Rehman, Sanam Baloch, Amna Wajahat, Behroz Sabzwari, Haroon Shahid, Lubna Aslam, Sonia Nazir, Mashal Tariq Khan, Asma Kashif, Danish Wakeel, Sajida Syed, Leyla Zuberi, Khalid Anam & others.

Director: Danish Nawaz

Writer: Sarwat Nazeer

If truth be told, Khaas’s ending broke the hearts of many fans of the drama. After all, no one expected Faakhir’s tragic death in the plot and it was a heavy blow for many of the viewers.

A surprising twist was Ammar gaining a fresh perspective and reflecting on his attitude towards Saba. Despite her being Fakhir’s widow and a mother, he extended a proposal towards her yet again. However, Saba bluntly turns it down and considers it as a pride to raise her child alone!

We would love to see Khaas returning with a new season, highlighting yet another crucial topic of how single mothers are battling challenges like a boss in our stereotypical society.

Nonetheless, we are also interested to know what happens to Ammar next! Does he turn over a new leaf or continues to emotionally victimize women?  It will be grand if its sequel happens and turns out it be as inspiring as its prequel.

We asked Khaas’s director Danish Nawaz if he ever plans to work on its sequel in the future. Here’s what he had to say:

Khaas was special to me and there can’t be another ‘Khaas’. So there is no point in making a sequel. But I am not sure what direction I will take in the future. I can get an inspiration any time and maybe I can make a story on it. Only time will tell!

Ranjha Ranjha Kardi

Cast: Iqra Aziz, Imran Ashraf, Syed Jibran, Kashif Mahmood, Asma Abbas

Director: Kashif Nisar

Writer: Faiza Iftikhar

Ranjha Ranja Kardi was a fresh and fast-paced tale, full of thrilling twists that were balanced out with Noori and Bhola’s heartwarming moments.

We cannot be more excited with the thought of the continuing adventures of Mr. and Mrs. Bhola in a sequel to this drama.

The story ended with a magical ending for our favorite couple, showing our hero gradually getting better and an adorable baby blessing their lives.

However, the finale didn’t show Nusrat Miyaan and Sahir being brought to book for their vile actions. And viewers were inquisitive that what judgment and verdict fate had in store for both of these villains.

Maybe a sequel can clear the story a bit further for the fans of the drama! What’s more, we are also curious to know how the leading characters raise their new-born together and what becomes of Bhola in later life.

Sahir’s return in their lives can add the much-needed twist in the plot. But this time we really want to witness him pay the price for his despicable deeds and Karma to hit him hard!

Inkaar

Cast: Sami Khan, Yumna Zaidi, Imran Ashraf, Rehan Sheikh, Noor Ul Hasan, Imran Peerzada, Nabila Khan

Director: Kashif Nisar
Writer: Zafar Mairaj

This gem of a drama, starring Yumna Zaidi, Sami Khan and Imran Ashraf just cannot get enough appreciation. And we really wish that the makers of Inkaar get cracking on its sequel.

After all, who wouldn’t want to see Imran Ashraf as Rehan Chaudhry one more time? Come to think of it, the drama ended showing our anti-hero being sent to his village like Hajra wanted him to be punished.

But did Rehan really change for the better after returning to his mother? Has his maniacal obsession with Hajra ended for good? Has he realized the error of his ways?

These are questions buzzing in our head and only a season 2 of Inkaar can help our curious souls. A follow-up on Rehan and Hajra’s life is all we are really eager to watch.

But will the sequel be as gripping as the prequel? There is only one way to find out, right?

We asked Kashif Nisar if he ever plans to work on Inkaar and RanjhaRanjhaKardi’s sequel. Here’s what he had to say:

“No, I have never thought of a sequel to them. There are so many more stories to tell and showcase to the world.”

Aangan

Cast: Ahsan Khan, Sonia Hussain, Mawra Hussain, Ahad Raza Mir, Sajal Ali, Hira Salman, Omair Tahir Rana, Hasan Noman Qureshi, Madiha Rizvi, Abid Ali

Director: Mohammed Ehteshamuddin

Writer: Mustafa Afridi

Our mind says that it might never happen but the crazy fan in us really wants a sequel to Aangan!

Viewers who have stayed loyal to the periodic drama from its first episode will know how patient and magical of a journey Aangan has been.

With a story vastly spread across different times and locations, the drama had been a rollercoaster ride narrated by its main character, the fearless feminist ‘Aaliyah’.

However, in the finale we see Aaliyah rejecting Safdar’s proposal, musing over her life and choices. After all, she was left alone in the end, with a hint of regret of losing Jameel to Chammi.

Maybe a sequel will give an ultimate narrative to Aaliyah’s character after she finds not only her true love but also success in all her ambitions.

We would love to see Shahroz Subzwari returning as Dr. Ahsan and aiming to win back Aaliyah’s heart. Safdar can also play a crucial role in becoming more of a negative influence in their lives and adding spice to the story.

If the original cast of Aangan returns and the makers mulls working on a sequel, we’re sure they could pull something off.

Bhook

Cast: Maria Wasti, Kamran Jillani, Nazarul Hassan, Hina Khawaja Bayat, Maryam Nafees, RabiyaShakeel, Naeema Butt & others.

Director: Mohsin Ali
Writer: Abdul Khaaliq Khan

An underrated drama, the five episodic ‘Bhook’ should definitely be on your watch-list of you haven’t viewed its powerful and eye-opening true story.

A Ramadan special, the plot revolved around a helpless, poor mother who poisons her children due to dire, financial crises after her husband’s death.

The actual incident marked a mother in Lahore aiming to drown her children for the very same reason.

With this tale, Bhook exposed the corrupt figures of our law enforcement agencies and media, imparting a message that they have a huge role in making and breaking the lives of citizens.

Moreover, it also highlighted how economic crisis and poverty has compelled the underprivileged of society to resort to extreme and even unlawful measures to feed their family.

This mini-series should not mark an end to Bhook. Season 2 is much needed to highlight yet another imperative tale depicting the harsh realities of our society.

Such series can bring to light important real-life stories that are often unheard and ignored but deserve to be brought to everyone’s attention. We really hope that the team behind Bhook takes note of this!

Suno Chanda

Cast: Farhan Saeed, Iqra Aziz, Farhan Ally Agha, MiznaWaqas, Nadia Afghan, Sohail Ikram, Tara Mahmood, Syed Adnan Shah (Tipu), FarihaJabeen, Muhammad Ahmed, Farah Shah, NabeelZuberi, Mishal Tariq, Arjumand Rahim, Samina Ahmed, Sabeena Farooq, Ali Safina, Raza Abbas Talish, Sami (Child) and others.

Director: Aehsun Talish

Writter: Saima Akram Chaudhry

A perfect part of our lives for the last two years, Suno Chanda has become our undisputed dose of comedy in Ramadan. Fans of the drama wait the whole year to witness the shenanigans of Jiya, Arsal and their wacky family all over again.

Every character of the drama has become a member of our own homes. From Joji to Mithu and Shahana to DJ, we adore them all for adding fun and laughter to our existence after an exhausting day of fasting. Its popularity is evident from the fact that Suno Chanda’s season 2 was amongst the most Googled drama in Pakistan in 2019.

Of course, entire Pakistan now wants a season 3 but the buzz is that the show will not be returning in 2020.

However, our favorite family MIGHT return after a break in 2021 with a new story, packed with more drama and hilarity.

This update was earlier confirmed by BBC Asian Network’s Haroon Rashid in a tweet.

In a perfect world, these sequels would totally happen! This is obviously not an extensive list. Which Pakistani drama would you want to see a sequel of?
