When was the last time you saw a supporting actress steal the show in a Pakistani TV drama?
That too in a play with known faces as the leading couple? If you have to think hard, then the answer is never. However, upcoming actress Srha Asgr changes all that by delivering a brilliant performance in Moomal Productions’ Pyar Ke Sadqay.
Not only does she share an excellent chemistry with her on-screen brother Abdullah (played by Bilal Abbas), his character’s wife Mahjabeen (Yumna Zaidi), mother (Atiqa Odho) and Pho (Sharmeen Kashif) but also spells trouble whenever she is in the same vicinity as her stepfather Sarwar (Omair Rana).
Not many know but Srha Asgr was first offered the role of Shanzay (now played by Yashma Gill) and she opted for Washma as she thought the character had strength besides other qualities.
Spotlight met the young actress and spoke a lot about everything from her character selection, working with a star cast and favorite scene in the drama.
Usually actresses playing sisters in our dramas, especially younger ones, don’t have much to do with the plot, but in Pyar Ke Sadqay, you steal the show with a stellar performance. Who do you credit for your success?
Moomal Entertainment approached me for Pyar Ke Sadqay last August but the character they offered me was that of Shanzay, not Washma.
Things didn’t work out because I looked younger for Bilal Abbas’s sweetheart, but later on, they offered me the character for Bilal’s younger sister (Washma) who had fewer scenes in the drama. However, the strength of this character attracted me and I went for it.
I had never played a character like this, where I can be mean and still be loved. I would give the credit of my success to Almighty Allah, with His help I am where I stand. Also the director Farooq Rind played a major role in adding the natural feel to each and every scene. We improvised, we rehearsed and then we performed. There had been scenes when Farooq Bhai would do the action himself and tell me to do it this way.
You play a spoilt brat on screen, who keeps his brother on his toes, and even the stepfather is scared of her. Are you like that in real-life as well?
To be honest, I am somewhat like Washma but I don’t fight all the time. I am very responsible, take hold of things at home, plan and preplan everything. Yes, I do take a stand for what’s right, protect, love and care for people who mean a lot to me. But I don’t hit my brothers (laughs). Sister sometimes yes, but she lives in the USA so don’t get to hit her often (smiles).
Sharing the screen with Yumna Zaidi, Bilal Abbas, Atiqa Odho and Omair Rana would have dampened the spirits of a young actor, but you seem to be on another level. Didn’t you feel scared at first?
I always wanted to work with Yumna Zaidi, and that was a treat in Pyar Ke Sadqay. I knew Bilal (Abbas) before, in fact, we started off from the same Talent Agency, and had worked in a web series in which I play his sister as well.
Omair Rana and Atiqa Odho both had a very positive vibe, and they both were very supportive. I didn’t get scared because even if I made a mistake, I knew I would be learning from it.
You play the strong-willed Washma who knows the secret of his stepfather, yet keeps silent in front of her mother. When can we expect her to explode on-screen and reveal it all?
You will see that very soon in upcoming episodes.
Of all the scenes you have been part of during the drama, which has been your most favorite and why?
There is a scene in one of the recent episodes where I picked up a bottle to hit Abdullah after he admits that marrying Mahjabeen was a mistake. I loved it because this action was not in the script but added by Farooq bhai. He actually showed me how to do the scene himself and I found it very cute yet impactful.
You have worked in quite a number of HUM TV dramas and even did a film Record recently. What’s next on your plate?
Yes I did a few projects of HUM TV whereas I have an upcoming drama on shoot for A-Plus. The rest will be decided once lockdown is over.
