Mahjabeen was unique, I was an average student: Yumna Zaidi

Every once in a blue moon comes a character that tests the acting prowess of the person playing that character.

Mahjabeen was Yumna Zaidi’s such character as not only did she live it during the last 30 weeks, she made people both sympathize with her and fall in love with her. From a student who would have kept failing in school had she not been rescued by a Prince Charming to a young woman who didn’t want to share her man, besides seeking justice for her father, she was exceptional in every avatar.

Spotlight asked Yumna Zaidi about her experience of working with a star cast, under director Farooq Rind and with Bilal Abbas Khan whose character was also slow, but not as naïve as hers.

Wouldn’t your term Mahjabeen as the most complete role of your career where you have done everything from comedy, serious to mature acting within a span of a few episodes?

Yes, I was able to perform this character in a way that people not only accepted it, but they also showed an immense amount of love to it. I did the half job by performing Mahjabeen and my audience did the other half by giving it so much love.

This was your first play with Bilal Abbas Khan, who played a not so different character from yours. How was that experience?

Yes, we were working for the first time but we clicked, didn’t we? (Smiles). Bilal Abbas Khan was excellent in his character as Abdullah and I truly respect him both as an actor and as a person. I will always thank him for performing it so brilliantly; he is a very supporting co-actor.

Serious question, were you a good student in school or one like Mahjabeen?

(Laughs) Mahjabeen was unique, I was an average student!

Weren’t you a little underwhelmed while working with so many talented actors especially Atiqa Odho and Omair Rana?

Atiqa Ji and Omair (Rana) were ‘Oh My God’ so friendly on the set and emitted amazingly positive energies at our workplace. I love them both and working with them was nothing short of a memorable experience.

Farooq Rind is a phenomenal director, how did working with him in JugnooPukaar and Ishq Zahe Naseeb help you in Pyar Ke Sadqay?

Farooq Rind is absolutely great in his craft of direction. He is one of the best directors around and I am proud to have worked under him in so many plays. From Jugnoo to Ishq Zahe Naseeb, every time I have worked with him, it has been a learning experience for me, one that helps me grow as an actor and human being.

How do you deal with online bullying that seems to have become common in Pakistan?

I always try to take any kind of criticism positively and look forward to feedback. As far as bullying is concerned – which is extremely wrong in any capacity – I believe that people who do it have a lack of empathy and understanding or they don’t know how to regulate their emotions. So I really don’t give such comments really attention.

It was the first time we saw you dance around; it seemed to come naturally to you. Any plans for doing that more often?

Dance is one of the forms of art that I love the most. I always prefer such work that’s worthy.

It seems Hum TV is your favorite channel where you have delivered hits after hits. From Ullo Baraye Farokht Nahi in 2013 to Pyar Ke Sadqay in 2020, how would you term the journey?

HUM TV has been a platform where I have experienced the most diverse characters, be it in Dar Si Jati Hai Sila, Inkaar, Ishq Zahe Naseeb, or Pyar Ke Sadqay. I thank them for believing in my work skills and always pushing me forward for something new to participate in.
