Here’s what our stars have to say about TikTokers!

If truth be told, there was a time TikTok was looked down upon and was considered a mere app for entertainment for millennials and Gen Z. But the world underestimated its potential.

Earlier, various marketing and tech gurus predicted that its rage will die down soon and the craze for the viral video platform will fade away. However, since 2019, the new player has amplified its user base to manifolds. Even Microsoft has its eyes set on buying it from the Chinese tech giant ‘ByteDance’ and the agreement is being termed as ‘The Deal of the Decade’.

Making Unknown Talent into Superstars

Especially in Pakistan, the app has paved the way for talented influencers termed as ‘TikTokers’. So much their power and presence have grown that we have seen TikTok stars gaining fame and recognition beyond the app. Brands like ‘Sooper’, ‘Infinix Mobile’, ‘Haier Pakistan’ have run aggressive campaigns to lure the youth using the app. This year, the Punjab government organized a meeting with local TikTokers with a high following to help create awareness regarding COVID-19. Later, the news went viral that popular Tiktok influencer Zulqarnain Sikander has signed a Pakistani movie.

Meanwhile, we all know the noise Asim Azhar’s ‘Tum Tum’ created and one of the major reasons was the track featured ‘AreekaHaq’, yet again a popular A-lister in the TikTok world. Following it, Bilal Saeed roped in a TikTok stunner ‘Jannat Mirza’ in his track ‘Shayar’.

But is TikTok here to stay in Pakistan?

Amidst all this, there has been a violent movement against the application. A segment of the society wants it banned for good and petitions have been filed in court to mark the end of TikTok in Pakistan.

Already in our neighboring nation India, the app has been banned since June 2019 as a result of the country’s geopolitical tensions with China. Is Pakistan going to follow suit? Or will we see Tiktokers barging ahead, breaking barriers, and conquering the entertainment realm beyond the app?

The Entertainment Industry Appears Welcoming

As established earlier, TikTok has given birth to a list of bankable celebrities. Stardom comes fast and furious on the application. But will they ever be able to make their debut in the ultimate world of show business? Will the entertainment fraternity accept them based on their skills portrayed in the mini clips?

We asked some of the veterans from the entertainment industry over what they think of TikTok and the meteoric rise of young celebrities on the app. Do they have the chance and potential to make it to the real ‘reel’ world? Here’s what they had to say:

Areeka Haq

Yes, not only TikTok or media influencers, anyone who has talent he or she can make his or her future in the entertainment industry. However, TikTok provides a better platform for them who face challenges while reaching out to our mainstream media industry.

TikTokers have greater chances and even demand to work for the mainstream entertainment industry as few of us already are working for dramas and films.

I think TikTok is an amazing platform where one can showcase their talents. Just like Facebook and Instagram allow people to upload and showcase their creativity and talent, TikTok lets the people exhibit their facial expressions, body language, and overall appearance. All these aspects can easily be judged through this platform except for dialogue delivery.

The casting directors can eventually evaluate this aspect after the auditions. TikTok is a prominent platform from where one can pick a lot of potential talent by getting them auditioned first and then if the casting director feels that the talent has strong dialogue delivery skills then they can be cast for a suitable role/drama etc.

TikTok is just like another app like Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. And people who are famous in TikTok are very popular in their world, with a lot of following and a lot of people love them.

I used to look down upon TikTokers before I met any of them. But after I downloaded the application, I spotted a lot of amazing dancers, performers, fashionistas, and content creators on the app. I still feel that any indecent content on any platform is not good for society. But when it comes to discovering talent, there are also YouTubers now that have received and we spot them even in commercials and variety shows. So why not well-groomed, talented performers from TikTok!

Faysal Quraishi

I think there is nothing wrong with discovering talent from such a platform. It is not necessary that even our youth burn themselves, stand for long hours, or even days outside production houses or PTV. We all have gone through such hustles in our careers.

The industry is always looking for new faces and needs fresh talent. TikTok has become such a place where it has become easy for people to wisely exhibit to the world that they have immense talent. I don’t understand why people are against TikTok. Huge personalities from around the world have a presence on TikTok.

Even Will Smith is on TikTok. In fact, the platform has become an on-going place for an audition. That is how only Pakistan discovered Hania Aamir through Dubsmash and Areeka Haq through TikTok.

Yasir Hussain

Today, Hania Aamir is an example for us all. She is no more on Dubsmash but has gain recognition in our entertainment industry over the years. TikTok works on-trend and whatever is trending works on the application.

TikTokers have to constantly make fresh content and different influencers trend on the platform every day. They won’t remain on TikTok for long. If they are good actors, then they are bound to make it to television and movies.

Farhat Ishtiaq

I believe that the world is rapidly changing. TikTok or any other social media platform have likewise amplified their reach. The main should be that the talent should be good, regardless of wherever it is discovered from.

If an individual has talent and ability, then why not.  Everything has turned digital and public opinion now matters. However, the nature of the content on TikTok matters a lot, and decent content should be made and promoted.
