My experience working with Sonya Hussyn was amazing in Saraab: Ghana Ali

Ghana Ali loves a challenge!

That is exactly what she told us while we had a heart-to-heart with her this week. There is something very different about her persona. She appears unafraid, straight forward, and always collected.

We don’t see her as the damsel in distress on our screens. In fact, she is often spotted as the baddie in stories and pulls off all her characters with aplomb. The starlet can be spotted in two of Hum TV’s top projects ‘Saraab’ and Dil Ruba’.

Though she is essaying a negative character in both the stories, there is a difference of day and night in her avatars.  But what has made Ghana opt for the evil woman? Has it become a habit or do the offers come by chance?

We couldn’t help asking Ghana while we sat down with her to have a chat. She opened up about playing Natasha and Warda in Dil Ruba and Saraab respectively, also gearing up for her upcoming movie ‘Gawah Rehna’.

Excerpts from the conversation are as follows:

Ghana Ali is playing a villain on Hum TV these days. Does she love being the bad party on-screen?

It is not that I love being the bad party on screen. I took a break from acting for my studies and made my comeback through various dramas on other channels.  I have done a lot of negative plays and got immense recognition for them. For Hum, this is the first time I am playing a bad party and somehow, both the projects turned out with me playing a negative role in the story.

There is a lot of margin in playing a negative role. For me, I would play any character that has a margin in it. So if a negative character being offered to me has margin and is difficult to play, I would do it.

You have two major projects Dil Ruba and Saraab on air these days. Who is your favorite: Natasha or Varda and why?

My favorite is Wardah, also Natasha. But primarily, Wardah because I have never played a middle-class negative character. Else all my roles revolved around a villain hailing from an elite class. It was not easy to look older as well. I had to die my hair and got a tight, sleek hairdo to fit into the role. People mostly typecast me into elite roles and believe that I cannot do middle-cast characters. But I had to prove them wrong.

Thanks to Mohsin Talat. He helped me a lot and somehow I did it.

How has your experience been working with Hania Aamir and Sonya Hussyn?

My experience working with Hania Aamir in Dil Ruba was okay but my experience with Sonya Hussyn was amazing in Saraab. I loved the fact that Sonya is so dedicated to her work, she is so passionate. She is such a good actress and it is always fun to work with a good star.

Your role in Saraab describes the plight of so many Pakistani women. What do you think women should do while facing such situations in real life?

I believe there is a frustration in women while having a child and dealing with negativity around, maybe from their mothers-in-law. The situation becomes so tense that they are bound to react or reflect. However, I suggest that they should believe in Allah and wait for the right time. Be positive and have faith. Whatever has been willed by Him, will happen.

Saraab discusses a major mental health issue. How will Vardah’s role eventually lead to an awareness of schizophrenia for the audience?

Saraab shows that the way Hoor’s family and even Wardah treats her is very wrong. She is very dominating and tends to control everything. Being the elder sister, Wardah should have tried to understand the problem she was going through as Hoor was her little sister. I have my own sister and she is very touchy about me since I am the youngest.

So I feel Wardah’s influence is very negative and elder sisters should be very close to their sister. They should play a positive part. There was too much ignorance from Wardah towards Hoor. When you observe that someone close to you is not behaving mentally fine, you should shower more love towards them. Not everything should be reflected in anger and irritation.

What is next for Ghana?

I am waiting for a film of mine ‘Gawah Rehna’ which will either be released by the end of this year or the beginning of next year. And there is another project directed by Ali Hasan that I am working on.
