In the era of the internet and the world thriving on technology, social media has become a challenging and tricky place to develop one’s presence.
While there are a plethora of benefits of the digital realm we live in, it has also given rise to a culture of cruelty and abuse that no one is immune to. Unfortunately, our celebrities are the most vulnerable from this abomination as their lives are hardly private from their fans and haters, alike. Time and again, we have seen internet trolls firing cyber-bullets and keyboard warriors spewing vitriol over the most harmless of celebrity pictures or life updates.
From Mahira Khan enjoying a day at the beach to Mehwish Hayat achieving Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, AsimAzhar being friend-zoned by Hania, or ShahrozSubzwari getting hate for marrying Sadaf Kanwal; malicious comments from digital vultures can have devastating results on the personal and professional lives of artists.
After all, cyber-bullying is NOT a joke. However, most celebrities have now devised coping mechanisms and strategies against such social media bullies. Most of them clap back with positivity and sometimes with sheer sass to bring their tyrants down.
We asked some of our favorite stars how they cope with online bullying in such trivial times. Their responses just proved how powerful they are in their battle against nasty comments and all those hiding behind their screens churning negativity belong to the weaker, toxic mindset.
Yumna Zaidi
Hate Attacks on Social Media: Negligible
Everyone loves Yumna, not just because of her remarkable performances but also because she is amongst the most soft-hearted stars we have on our screens. What’s more, she stays away from controversies, keeps her personal life away from prying web trolls, and always has the sweetest smile to flaunt on Instagram.
Counter-Attack Tip:
I always try to take any kind of criticism positively and look forward to feedback.
As far as bullying is concerned – which is extremely wrong in any capacity – I believe that people who do it have a lack of empathy and understanding or they don’t know how to regulate their emotions. So I don’t give such comments attention.
Hira Mani
Hate Attacks on Social Media: Attracts them like a magnet.
She has fans who love her and her family, but then Hira has also gotten herself ensnared in most controversies in the past. Yet, she remains positive and is willing to welcome her haters with as much love as she welcomes her fans.
Counter-Attack Tip:
I don’t mind them. If there will be no haters than I will never be able to appreciate those who love me. So having haters is a must and negative comments are necessary. This way, I will be able to realize the importance of positive reactions amongst them.
I like those who bash me because when someone criticizes me and the others send their love, I feel their admiration in manifolds. We are public figures and we cannot ask people on gunpoint to love us. However, we can try to please them with our work. In this media field, you can only be successful with your work. By the grace of Allah, my fan-following has increased with such speed, and it is all due to my work.
Mansha Pasha
Hate Attacks on Social Media: Under-control.
From her fashion statements, dance videos to candid moments with her fiancée; Mansha has often drawn poisonous comments from the social media brigade. But our lady is sensible and has been handling it all like a boss!
Counter-Attack Tip:
It is not always easy as people say that since you are in the public eye, you have to bear with it. What they don’t realize is that nobody gives us a handbook to follow when you become popular. There is no training course for actors on how to deal with social media or how to deal with online trolling. This is stuff you learn with time and sometimes you react and sometimes you don’t. Yes, I agree, sometimes you also make mistakes by reacting but then it’s a learning process.
There have been moments when some comments on Social Media have shaken me but then it’s not just me. Every artist has a certain amount of patience and sensitivity level; we have to be sensitive to do the job we have to do. At the end of the day, every good comment makes up for at least a few bad ones. I have been lucky in that sense as I have gotten a lot of love also, especially from journalists, colleagues, friends, and fans who send some nice things to me. That sort of makes up for some of the negativity that is around.
Muneeb Butt
Hate Attacks on Social Media: Mostly High
We all remember how Muneeb was grilled for pulling off the most splendid wedding Pakistan’s entertainment industry had seen in ages. Social media has shown him no mercy and much recently, people even trolled him over pictures of Amal.
Counter-Attack Tip:
I do read comments on social media but I don’t reply to most of them and just let them go. A lot of people comment. Some are good and some are negative. But if you end up noting everything your followers say, your whole day will be consumed in it.
I think one should not take the negativity to heart. In the beginning, I used to feel it a lot but then I learned how to handle it over time. When a user comments something extremely mean, I often block them. Otherwise, I avoid responding to social media.
Mohib Mirza
Hate Attacks on Social Media: Not any that we remember
Our DilRuba hero has a huge fanbase and very few haters are spotted on his social media. He keeps low, stays private, and gives the most sensible statements on controversial matters. That’s why he is our favorite, always and forever!
Counter-Attack Tip:
I often read comments on my social media and these days, I am trying my best to respond to each one of them. There are also genuine questions people ask and I appreciate the effort every fan has done to write it.
Online Bullying has always happened and will continue to happen. If one is unveiling their personal life on social media, then they should be geared up for all sorts of comments. Otherwise, one needs to devise its online presence as such that bullying can be avoided. One should be prepared, aware, and strong enough to hold your stance and be intelligent about responding or not responding.
Yashma Gill
Hate Attacks on Social Media: Fairly High
Gill has often been caught in social media heat but she always manages to come out of it gracefully. Sometimes it is her dance number or fiery pictures that people find problematic. But the rising star is smart, wise, and sassy. Her internet presence is growing and she has even launched her YouTube channel.
Counter-Attack Tip:
Being a public figure, I believe anyone who is in the public eye, gives the right to the audience to comment on their public life. As an actress, I don’t mind people criticizing me for work as I take it as healthy criticism but at the same time, one should know the accurate manner to convey their criticism. When criticism is done constructively, actors will be motivated to learn and improve but hate remarks are quite hurtful and upsetting. We shouldn’t spread negativity and hate because it takes a toll on the life of people.
Shahbaz Shigri
Hate Attacks on Social Media: Loaded on candid pictures with Aima Baig
Shahbaz is gradually making his way into the acting world and the reviews have been mixed for his performances so far. But it is always his viral pictures with her darling, Aima that ignite the hate bandwagon. Not that the couple cares and honestly, we at Spotlight root for the pretty pair!
Counter-Attack Tip:
Sometimes I do read comments on social media, but I try and avoid it when I can. There’s a lot of love out there, but there’s a lot of undeserved hate as well. But I can’t blame anyone. Each person has their own opinions and they have every right to express those opinions. By the same logic, I also have the right to not view any unwarranted opinions that seek to put down a person.
I have no idea how others handle the negativity. Speaking just for myself, I’ve come to a point in my life where what others think isn’t something that drives or affects me or the decisions I make. Some people will love you, some will hate you, and some are least bothered by anything regarding you. You do you, let the rest fall into place. “This is the way”.

aur munasib “halkay”

Ask a guy to do something candid in front of a camera, 7/10 would instinctively go for a "you talkin' to me". P.S. that statistic is based off of a total sum of zero facts and is probably completely wrong. Its really not even a statistic. More just the blatherings of a fool.
