Confused Hoorain makes ‘Saraab’ more interesting!

Every now and then a character makes an entry in our dramas that is neither good nor bad, but confused, and Sonya Hussyn’s Hoorain Sadaqat from Saraab is its prime example.

Suffering from schizophrenia, Hoorain can’t differentiate between what’s right and wrong, what’s real and unreal, and above all, doesn’t trust anyone. That’s what makes her the ideal subject for our Character of the Week segment; after all, she needs our help to steer in the right direction, doesn’t she?

Who Is Hoorain and why is she so confused?

Hoorain (Sonya Hussyn) is the youngest daughter of Mr. Sadaqat (Aurangzeb Leghari); while her eldest sister Warda (Ghana Ali) is married, her middle sister Namal (Nazish Jahangir) isn’t. That’s why when her first cousin Asfand Yar (Sami Khan) starts taking interest in Hoorain, Namal doesn’t like it since she also cares for him. Things go from bad to worse when Hoorain stars hallucinating and talks to an imagined version of Asfand Yar, who loves her back and respects her in a way no one else does.

Her constant standoff with her family, her defiance, and her aloofness scares her mother (Farida Shabbir) who first decides to get her engaged to Warda’s brother in law (Jahanzeb Khan), and later convinces her husband to take ‘Hoor’ to Interior Sindh where she can be ‘cured’ of black magic. Asfand Yar rescues her from the mazaar and then takes her to a doctor, but instead of appreciating his efforts, Hoor’s family blames him for trying to take advantage of their daughter.

In fact, it was Asfand Yar who learned that she was suffering from Schizophrenia, a fact that is known only to his mother (Kinza Malik) and friend Saqib (Shafqat Khan) till now.

What makes Hoorain worth discussing?

Playing a mental or disturbed patient on TV has usually been a man’s forte in recent years. From Imran Ashraf’s Bhola in Ranjha Ranjha Kardi to Zahid Ahmed’s Sameer in Ishq Zahe Naseebmen have played these characters more comfortably than women.

Sonya Hussyn is one of the few actresses who have done that previously as well, but her Hoorain is different from anything is done before. She wasn’t the first choice for the role but after many actresses backed out because they felt that they might not be able to do justice to the portrayal of a disturbed soul, Sonya took over and excelled.

In recent times, such a character hasn’t been written and portrayed perfectly by an actress on this side of the border and Sonya Hussyn deserves all the praise for her performance.

Why is everyone scared of Hoorain Sadaqat?

Usually, patients suffering from Schizophrenia don’t remember if they had misbehaved with someone, mistreated a person, and above all, if the person they are talking to is real or imagined. Sonya Hussyn’s performance not just brings all such things to the fore, it makes everyone scared of the character.

Warda might be her eldest sister but the way Hoorain rebukes her twice in three episodes shows that she doesn’t care if she is the eldest sister; Namal might be a few years’ more experienced, but to Hoorain that doesn’t matter as she feels that she is plotting something against her. She even doesn’t give her mother any importance and rightly so; after all, it was the mother’s genius idea to take her to mazaars and get her engaged to someone she barely knew.

Her attitude is different towards her father and Asfand Yar; for her father knows how to address her and get through to her. As for Asfand Yar, half of the time she is talking to him, he isn’t there and that’s why when he does appear in front of her, he has no clue what she is talking about.

Since he loves her, he agrees to whatever she is saying, and that’s how he managed to convince her to escape from the mazaar and visit the hospital so a doctor can be consulted. Like most patients suffering from Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder, Hoor believes she is right and that others are understanding her, when in fact they are clueless and uncertain of how things might be shaping up in her mind.

For her, all is black and white, either it’s too good to be true or too bad to be horrid, with nothing in between.

Is Hoorain Sadaqat Character Different From Sonya Hussyn The Actress?

Of course, she is; in fact, Hoorain is different from all the other characters played by Sonya Hussyn except for Nazo who was also a mentally challenged girl. Not only did she attend workshops regarding mental illness, but she also observed mental patients and interacted with them ahead of Saraab.

Full points must be given to writer Edison Idrees Masih and director Mohsin Talat for giving their full support to the actress who has come out with one of the strongest female performances of the year, if not the strongest.

How Should Hoorain’s Story in Saraab End?

It should be a happy ending for Hoorain who has suffered a lot at the hands of her family; her father doesn’t understand her, her mother is always suspicious, her siblings don’t believe she has mental issues and her fiancé has no clue what he is getting into.

The only person who understands her is Asfand Yar and the audience would be more than happy if the two get married and lead a happy life. He was the only person to believe in her at a time when her own parents took her to meet a desi exorcist when she in reality needed medical help. After all, Asfand Yar’s parents are her Mamoon (Sajid Shah) and Phupo (Kinza Malik) who care for her as much as he does.
