Mushk is one of the most-watched dramas currently on-air; with Imran Ashraf and Aehsun Talish writing and directing for the second time after Tabeer, and appearing in front of the screen, it is making the audience get the feel of the dramas from the golden era.
However, one character that stands out in this drama is that of Guddi, portrayed by Urwa Hocane to perfection. She is not the leading lady in the play (Momal Sheikh’s Mehek is), she is not the villain (that honor goes to Zara Tareen’s Zuleikha), but somewhere in between. Why is she like that and what are the reasons that make her the Character of the Week, let’s find out:
Why Is Guddi so loveable and detestable at the same time?
Guddi has shades of more bad than good, but since she looks out for her own self, takes the Taayi head-on, and wants to undo everything bad she has done, we might call it the do-gooder. That is until she chose that side of hers in which she takes money from everyone who has it and nullifies the good.
Be it making Adam (Imran Ashraf) pay her the money Mehek owes her while holding her kid as ransom at the railway station, or extracting money from another fellow extractor (Raza Talish) just to get back at her employer, Guddi knows how to manipulate others and make them pay for things they don’t want to happen to others.
What makes Guddi worth discussing?
Of course, she is. Had things happened in the ideal world, she might not have existed in Mushk but then, good things happen to those who wait and Guddi could do anything but that. She sold her neighbor’s house when she was young, then turned into a professional con-woman after a few scams and was on the run from the police when she met Mehek and took advantage of her weakness, became her friend (for benefit), and constantly makes her realize that it is she who is helping Mehek, not the other way around. Takes a lot of guts to be that shameless, but Guddi is an expert when it comes to that!
What makes Guddi the shrewdest character currently on TV?
Guddi is not your average girl-next-door who is waiting to get married, have kids, and settle down. Nor is she a woman who wants to work her way to the top and make money for her retirement. She is the kind of woman who has invisible antennas over their head, who knows when something is not right, and instead of trying to straighten things up, she uses the situation to her benefit.
Be it the secret romance between Saqib and Roshni (Raza Talish and Seher Khan), the illicit affair between Dr. Rana (Raja Haider) and Roshni’s mother (Zara Tareen), the treatment that is slowly poisoning Roshni’s father (Hasan Ahmed), or making things right for the weak Mehek, Guddi is here, there, and everywhere.
She is the one who found the ‘poison’ that is being administered in Taaya’s bloodstream, she saw the Doctor looking around for Taayi, she convinced Roshni that her mother is the villain here and connected her to Saqib, besides posing as the mother of Mehek’s kid and doing the dishes. How does she find time to do everything from real laundry to the dirty laundry is something that makes her the shrewdest character on TV at the moment.
How Guddi is different from Urwa Hocane’s other characters?
For four years since Udaari, Urwa Hocane was establishing herself as a film actress. After playing the lead in Na Maloom Afraad (2014), she managed to bag secondary roles in Punjab Nahi Jaungi and Na Maloom Afraad 2 (both 2017) before playing the main lead in Rangreza (2017), and finally turning producer with Tich Button.
With not much happening in films, Urwa decided to return to her roots and took up her first acting role on TV in four years and made it her own in every way. She has never been this expressive, this bold, and this conniving on TV, although she did show a glimpse of being cunning as Durdana in Punjab Nahi Jaungi. She brings the filmi flair in her acting, making her character livelier than everyone else’s.
You can see Guddi dancing around in a room, moving with grace, and doing everything not expected from a naukrani but in her mind, she is the queen, and the others are her slaves. Besides her, the only major actors in Mushk who have worked in films are Osama Tahir (one film), Momal Sheikh (one Bollywood film), and Sohail Sameer (two films). We are not counting Qavi Khan because so far he has played a minor role in the drama, plus he is a legend when it comes to films or TV.
How should Guddi’s story in Mushk End?
If one goes by the OST Music Video that was released before the drama was aired, Guddi might end up with Adam, but right now that seems quite unlikely as Adam is all set to get engaged to Mehek. Will the emergence of Shayan (Osama Tahir) make Mehek realize that she is committing a mistake, and bring Guddi in the picture is not known.
The viewers want her to complete her promised time with Mehek and return home to her parents who are in need of her support (financially) and have no clue that she is on the run. With police coming in the picture, she should get afraid but being Guddi, she might find it thrilling to face the police. She deserves jail time for her crimes but so does her employer (Zara Tareen), and if one can move around as an independent person, there is no reason why the other can’t do the same.
