Character of the Week: Zuleikha is so bad that she is horrid! Zuleikha is as evil as evil could be!

When the history of the world would be written, there would be a special chapter for those who made others’ life a living hell. And the main antagonist in Mushk – Zuleikha for all, Taayi for others – played by Zara Tareen would find a place in that chapter. For she is the living definition of a Villain, who gets the kick from destroying others’ happiness, especially if it comes at the cost of saving her own skin or someone else’s, who is closer to her. This week we analyze her character and discuss what makes her so bad that she can be termed as evil incarnate!

Why Does Zuleikha Become More Detestable with the drama moving towards a conclusion!

Zuleikha isn’t just a normal evil person, she is the evilest one in her surroundings and is proud of it too. At first, the viewer felt bad for her for she was abused by her husband (Hasan Ahmed) when he was able to stand on his two feet. In the initial episodes when he was shown bed-ridden without them knowing the cause, they felt bad about the entire family. But when they found out that she was the reason for his illness, and that it was her plan to keep him that way, everyone started hating her for the right reasons. Add to that her affair with her husband’s doctor, the way she mistreated Guddi, and her suspicions about Mehek, and you have a character that ‘when she is bad she is horrid’.

What makes Zuleikha worth discussing in a drama that has countless characters?

Writer Imran Ashraf must be commended for creating characters that are good enough for a show of their own if they survive onscreen after Mushk. Zuleikha must have been created after a lot of thought for the name reminds the viewer of one of the earliest female villains in Islamic history, but she also has all the characteristics of those that followed her. She hates every other woman around her, be it a relative or a servant; she doesn’t care if her daughter loves someone for she pays him off because she doesn’t like him; she seems to be suspicious even when her husband’s niece is out asking a male friend for help, for Zuleikha belongs to that school of thought where a girl and a boy can only be lovers, nothing else.

What makes Zuleikha a different kind of character currently on TV?

In Pakistani dramas, usually, the villains are mother-in-laws who didn’t have a good life when they were newly-weds themselves; that’s why they are shown to be aggressive towards their son’s wives no matter who they are. Zuleikha is different from these characters because a) she is not a mother in law but a mother, b) she had a miserable life due to her husband, and no mother in law is in the picture and c) the experience turned her into a narcissistic who believes that the Sun revolves around her, not the planet Earth.

Her daughter hates her so much that she chose to run away from her own wedding; her husband starts hating her after finding out that she has been poisoning her with the help of his doctor, and her niece-in-law’s ‘servant’ wants her to suffer because she had been treated badly by her in her initial days at the haveli. In short, no one loves her, and the only person who cared about her (Dr. Rana) seems to have his eyes only for Guddi, making Zuleikha lose her last ally in her quest for her selfish motives.

How Zuleikha is different from Zara Tareen’s other characters?

Zara Tareen in reality is a tall, attractive woman who would have been mistaken for a model a few years back; yet she plays the character of Zuleikha with such conviction that the viewers forget that she is a younger woman playing an older character. Her work in different dramas as well as Saat Mulaqatein – the web series she did with Noman Ijaz – was different from Mushk, where she commands ‘disrespects’ whenever she enters the frame. She is not just a failed mother, an unsuccessful wife, a doomed mistress, and a bad Taayi which shows that as an actress, she is doing a great job! Irrespective of her fate, Zuleikha will go down as the most-hated person in a drama where all are expected to have a happy ending but her!

How should Zuleikha’s story in Mushk End?

The question should not be how Zuleikha’s story should end, it should be that how horrific her end should be for she made life miserable for all those around her. It would be great if the police capture her for she tried to murder her husband with the help of her lover Dr. Rana (Raja Haider) before the latter turned over a new leaf. Her own hubby (Hasan Ahmed), who is recovering thanks to Guddi (Urwa Hocane), should ensure (after recovering, of course) that she should be punished for her crimes. Dada (Manzoor Qureshi) should banish her from the haveli for she tried to create division between him and her eldest granddaughter when in fact it was her daughter who was at fault. And finally, her lover Dr. Rana should ditch her publicly and also expose her, now that he is totally under Guddi’s magic, without knowing that she is using him to get back to his ex.
