HUM Network Leads Lux Style Awards 2020 … Again!

Another year, another triumph, that’s how one would describe HUM Network’s victory at the Lux Style Awards 2020, where took all the major awards, as always. From Kashif Nisar’s Ranjha Ranjha Kardi to Inkaar, and Farooq Rind’s Ishq Zah e Naseeb, every hit drama from 2019 was nominated and took back at least one award. There were more when it came to the film category where Mahira Khan surprised all by bagging both the viewer’s choice and the Critics award for her performance in Superstar. Let’s analyze the wins and find out why these ‘winners’ went back home with a trophy, and others didn’t.

5  AWARDS FOR RANJHA RANJHA KARDI

Best TV Actor – Viewer’s Choice: Imran Ashraf

Best TV Actress – Critics: Iqra Aziz

Best Play Director: Kashif Nisar

Best Play Writer: Faiza Iftikhar

Best Original Sound Track: JB Sisters/Rahma Ali, Composed and Produced by Sami Khan

Was there any play better than Ranjha Ranjha Kardi aired in 2019? Was any play more worthy of the awards than Ranjha Ranjha Kardi was? No. Because it was not just a play that entertained the audience but also highlighted the evils in our society. It not just heralded Imran Ashraf from a ‘forever supporting actor’ to the ‘main league’ but also showed the world that performance matters, not the actors giving that performance.  Also, to stand in front of Imran Ashraf as Bhola was a tough task and Iqra Aziz achieved that by giving the best performance of her career. By winning the Critics award for Best Actress, she managed to do what not many had done before – win three awards in two years at the Lux Style Awards (last year she won both the Jury and Viewer’s Choice Awards at LSA for Suno Chanda).

Let’s talk about Faiza Iftikhar who wrote the script and director Kashif Nisar who directed it; they both had one person in mind for Bhola and since they knew who was the best person for the role, they all clicked together. Faiza’s script was executed to perfection by Kashif Nisar who bagged his second consecutive director’s award in two years (last year being for Darr Si Jaati Hai Sila). And then there was the marvelous OST by Sami Khan (not the actor, but the music composer) who collaborated with JB Sisters and Rahma Ali to come up with something that matched Ranjha Ranjha Kardi’s stature.

2 AWARDS FOR SUPERSTAR

Best Film Actress – Critic’s Choice & Viewer’s Choice: Mahira Khan

Mahira Khan’s Superstar was one of the most successful films of 2019, and her getting the twin awards – both by Viewers and Critics – wasn’t surprising at all. Her competition was tough especially with Mansha Pasha and Amna Ilyas from Laal Kabootar and Baaji respectivelywhile Meera was also in the race for Baaji yet nobody could top Mahira’s popularity for she continues to represent Pakistan internationally, making us all proud. Written by Mustafa Afridi and directed by Ehteshamuddin, Superstar was a story of a young girl who becomes a ‘Superstar’ because of her hard work, resilience, and ability to adapt to changing trends. Add to that her dance performances, her hard-hitting ‘Tamasha Hai Tau Tamasha Hi Sahi’ dialogues and her ability to hold her ground opposite Nadeem Baig, Bilal Ashraf and others, she deserved to win the award(s).

1 AWARD FOR INKAAR

Best TV Actress – Viewer’s Choice: Yumna Zaidi

For those who saw Zafar Mairaj’s Inkaar, there was no doubt that anybody other than Yumna Zaidi would win the Best TV Actress award. She played the character of a girl who is nearly stabbed to death by her former boyfriend on the night of her wedding but survives to take him to court. She was brilliant as Hajra from the first episode where she falls in love with Imran Ashraf’s Rehan Chaudhry, who turns out to be ‘looking out’ for his friend Shayan (Sami Khan) who was the one in love with Hajra. She plays the love interest of both the boys, and after she chooses the good one over the evil, her life changes as Rehan Chaudhry goes mad and stabs her with scissors 25 times. How she doesn’t forgive him after recovering and stands up against him in court is what made Yumna Zaidi stand tall over all the other nominees.

1 AWARD FOR ISHQ ZAH E NASEEB

Best TV Actor – Critics: Zahid Ahmed

Luck favors the brave and Zahid Ahmed’s brave decision to play a man suffering from split personality disorder helped him get his first Lux Style Award for Best TV Actor. He not only changed the way actors are looked at in Pakistan but also proved to the world that when a leading man is talented, he can play any character conceived by the writer. With Sonya Hussyn, Sami Khan, Yumna Zaidi, and Zarnish Khan in important roles, Zahid Ahmed was simply superb as both Sameer and Sameera in this Hashim Nadeem play, which was directed to perfection by Farooq Rind. His ability to excel in both the characters – male and female – and pull it off successfully was one of the main reasons why he went home with the trophy.
