With all the hype and hoopla, the story’s first episode did justice to the high expectations set from the project. After all, with Shazia Wajahat and Wajahat Rauf backing it, a power-packed cast featuring in it, and the veteran Hashim Nadim penning its plot; Raqs-e-Bismal appears as an ultimate blockbuster package of a drama.
So much so, it’s fast-paced pilot episode left us craving for more- especially to see more of Sarah Khan who appeared in the last few minutes before the end. Let’s take a quick review of what happened last night in the much-awaited Raqs-e-Bismil.

Of Forbidden Love and Formidable Laws
Our tale begins with the head of a Syed family, Peer Qudrat Ullah Shah (Mehmood Aslam) delivering a sermon in his ‘Astana’. Spotted in the crowd are his sons ‘Musa’ (Imran Ashraf) and ‘Isa’ (Momin Saqib). However, a messenger distracts them from the religious address and we see the intimidating pair, in all their fury, rushing to a deserted location.
Apparently, they have been informed that their cousin ‘Sakina’ (Anoushey Abbasi) is marrying her non-Syed lover in secret. Ambushing the Nikkah and threatening to kill all the men involved in making it happen, Musa takes Sakina back to their home where he exposes her in front of the entire family. Clearly, it’s against the law for the women in the tribe to fall in love, let alone with someone who is not from their cast.

Our hero has almost tied his cousin to the tree and is about to punish her. But he is stopped by her aunt ‘Sakina’s mother’ (Javeria Abbasi), who is also his foster mother, to spare her daughter. Musa, who is his father’s Jaanasheen, releases Sakina but still, his strict morals refuse to forgive her. But the worse is yet to happen to Sakina. She is forced by Peer Qudrat to tie the knot to her cousin Isa to save her honor and further humiliation. Unlike his brother Musa, Isa has a soft heart. He feels for Sakina and agrees to marry her upon his father’s order.
Sakina is shattered and heart-broken. On the day of her wedding, she curses Musa that may he love someone so as intensely as she loved, only to be separated from his beloved and writhe in pain from the separation.
The tormenting warning does not affect Musa. He remains stone-hearted, cruel, and pitiless- unaware of what the future has in store for him. Little did he know, that in the upcoming days he too will fall in love just with the mere sight of a woman’s enticing eyes.

Here we are introduced to Sarah Khan. Dressed in veil from head-to-toe, she meets Musa on a bus ride and our hero gets lost in her enchanting gaze as she saves him from being attacked by a mob.
The promo of the next episode shows Musa proposing his ladylove. We also see a glimpse of Sarah looking breath-taking in her heavy jhumkas and deeply-kohled eyes. Who is she and what challenges will arise with her entry into Moosa’s life? Can’t wait to know it all.
A Thunderous Plot, Roaring Performances and Perfect Execution
Raqs-e-Bismal’s first episode was no less than impeccable. Hashim Nadeem has weaved immense depth in the story, especially in the character of Musa.
He is hard-core, authoritarian, and stern; but the love of those close to them has the influence to soften them. He listens to his foster mother to spare Sakina and even respects his mother’s wishes to not punish the men involved in her secret Nikkah. But he is a man of his morals. He takes his duty of being his father’s successor to heart and perhaps that’s why he has taken it as his responsibility to ensure that the women of his family are protected. He, however, doesn’t realize that he is suffocating the females in this process, biding them to unnecessary rules and a conservative mindset. Portraying it all so seamlessly is Imran Ashraf. From his bad-boy looks to his body language, the actor has made us fall in love with his brashness, vigor, and ferociousness of Musa. From being a softie Adam in Mushk to a stringent Musa in Raqs-e-Bismal, Imran Ashraf surely has an appeal to allure audiences like no one can!

Mehmood Aslam essays the patriarch Peer who is equally robust and hot-headed. He carries himself with the forbidding aura and power that his character demands. No one can mess with Peer Qudrut Ullah and Aslam has portrayed it immaculately in all the scenes.
We also loved Anoushey Abbasi’s performance in the episode. The rebellious streak of her character was quite evident in the actress’s eyes and so was the helplessness when she was being sent into a forceful marriage. She pulled off being the damsel in distress, making sure her acting appears natural and looking striking while at it.

Momin Saqib’s performance is even better than that in Be Adab. He appeared at ease with his avatar of Isa, who is trying to be his self under his brother’s shadow. It is for sure that he is hero material and we are eager to see him explore his talent all the more in the future.

The tales penned by Hashim Nadeem always have immense potential and are remembered for years to come. We are expecting Raqs-e-Bismal to enjoy a similar flourishing fate. Teamed with Wajahat Rauf, his novel is bound to be a masterpiece, with excellent cinematography of every scene.
It is obvious that audience will watch the drama. It can be the star power of Sarah Khan and Imran Ashraf to be the initial driving force. But only its intriguing story and powerful execution will steer it to ultimate success.
