Why is Zara Sheikh’s return to TV worth the wait?

She may have made her film debut way back in 2000, but Zara Sheikh has always been a TV gal. It was through her modelling assignments that she began her career around the same time, and became the darling of the media and her fans in no time. After working in highest-grossing Pakistani films to appearing in the most-popular music videos, Zara Sheikh is making her comeback on TV through HUM TV’s Raqse Bismil, where she plays an important character opposite Imran Ashraf. Why should Zara Sheikh’s comeback be anticipated as something worth the wait, and what made her the ‘crush’ of many before the word became a norm, let’s find out.

Yasir Akhtar’s O Sanam

The song that introduced Zara Sheikh to the world was also Pakistan’s first music ‘sponsored’ video; she was the ‘Jazz girl’ at that time and was introduced as the same character. The song O Sanam by Yasir Akhtar not only featured the actor on-screen but was also directed by him, and is still very popular after so many years because of its fresh and different execution. Zara Sheikh played a billboard model who comes to life and the protagonist falls in love with her, despite knowing that she might not be the real thing. It was after that music video that people started noticing the dazzling beauty who went onto star in a major film opposite Shaan Shahid – Tere Pyar Mein and became the first-choice of most film directors in no time.

Haath Se Haath Kia Gaya – Tere Pyar Mein (2000)

Hasan Askari’s Tere Pyar Mein not just launched the career of successful model Zara Sheikh but also opened the filmdom’s doors for those girls who wanted to act in films but faced opposition from their families. Zara Sheikh wasn’t just a good-looking girl with ambitions but was also well-read and well-spoken, and that changed the dynamics for many actresses who followed her into the field. In this song, she looked nothing less than a vision who came, dazzled and left prompting the protagonist to remember her with tears in his eyes. And before you can listen to the song and guess the singer, let me tell you, it’s Sonu Nigam on Shaan Shahid, and Sadhna Sargam on Zara Sheikh. No wonder they look out of this world!

Kal Thi Mohabbat – Tere Pyar Mein (2000)

India has one thing that Pakistan doesn’t and that’s the Taj Mahal in Agra, the monument that celebrates love. In this song, the set designers created their own version of Taj Mahal so that Zara Sheikh’s character Preeti could sing a song in front of the ‘Taj’ and profess her love for the man who crossed over to India to bring her back to her ancestral city Lahore. Her dancing skills improved after her first film but she makes up for the raw dance steps with her beauty that made her the darling of the entire country; many even wondered how an Indian actress agreed to act in a Pakistani film, without knowing that ‘Preeti’ was as much Pakistani as they were!

Akela Mujhe Chor Ke – Chalo Ishq Larayen (2002)

Zara Sheikh was not just a drop-dead gorgeous actress in her film days, but there was more to her than her fans could have imagined. She reteamed with her Tere Pyar Mein director Hassan Askari for Chalo Ishq Larayen and although the film featured renowned pop singer Ali Haider in a supporting role, it was Zara Sheikh who stole the show with her vocals. She not only sang a couple of songs in the film including this version, they were also filmed on her and helped her enter the esteemed list of actors who could sing and excel in both the departments.

 Khamaj – Fuzon (2004)

Before there was Baaji, Saqib Malik was known for his exploits as a music director, and Khamaj was the biggest music video of his career. Guess who was part of the dazzling video that hasn’t aged more than 15 years later? Zara Sheikh who shared the screen for the second time with his Tere Pyar Mein co-star Shaan Shahid. In the music video set in the golden years of Pakistan’s film industry, Shaan plays a film director in search for the perfect female lead in his upcoming film, and when he does meet ‘Naila’ played by Zara Sheikh, he knows that the girl has all it takes it to make it big. The two couldn’t end up together but the way they interacted with each other, their intense chemistry was something that hasn’t been equalled since.
