HUM TV has experimented a trip down the memory lane and, from the first five episodes, it seems they have grabbed the audience’s nerve, the very nerve that was left untouched and unattended for a long time. What makes Raqeeb Se exactly what the doctor ordered, let’s analyze.
When was the last time you saw a TV drama that had no antagonist, no protagonist, just plain and simple characters from our surroundings? In Raqeeb Se, writer Bee Gul has created such characters who care about others, who know that by doing good to others, they are helping themselves and that not everything has to be done for a favor. If Maqsood sahib (Naumaan Ijaz) is a ‘medicine man’ in the city, then he will treat the patient even if that person is his lost love Sakina (Hadiqa Kiani) from his village, with the help of his wife Hajra (Sania Saeed), despite the objection of his daughter Insha (Faryal Mehmood) and in the presence of Sakina’s daughter Ameeraan (Iqra Aziz). Why? Because that’s what good people do, even if it means revealing skeletons in their closet in front of their kids who know a little too much about Maqsood-Sakina’s love story.
Raqeeb Se revolves around two families comprising mostly of women who know about a love affair that existed twenty years ago, between Naumaan Ijaz’s Maqsood sahib and Hadiqa Kiani’s Sakina, the village belle. The best part about the affair is that it wasn’t hidden and is sort of available for everyone to read, something Iqra Aziz’s Ameeraan loved. Sakina existed in Maqsood’s world before he married Hajra, and since Hajra and her daughter know all about it, they have different views about the return of Sakina. Hajra cares about her because she believes that Sakina helped make Maqsood the kind of man he turned out to be, while Insha feels that there is no need to entertain the ‘guests’ especially someone who has broken the heart of her father (if that is what really happened!). More developments in the fifth episode created tension between the women, but it will all be revealed in upcoming episodes as to what really ended the tragic love story!
With the introduction of veterans Salman Shahid and Saba Faisal (Maqsood Ahmed’s elder brother and sister-in-law), things are moving at an interesting pace and with every episode, new details are emerging. Who would have imagined that Hajra’s family would have gone through so much or that Insha’s boyfriend feels that he is inferior to her? That Maqsood Ahmed had a younger brother and that he spent two years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit? Add to that the indecisiveness of Rafiq Ali (Saqib Sumeer) who is Sakina’s husband, Ameeraan’s father, and despite being a violent man, has no clue how to behave in front of Maqsood Sahib, his ‘raqeeb’! And then there is Ameeraan who at one moment wants to stay with her abusive father and the other decides to accompany the father she never had, on a journey back to the city!
We might not want to believe but we have met most of the characters in Raqeeb Se drama in our real lives. We know of a Sakina who gets beaten by her husband yet doesn’t leave him, whose daughter is a firecracker and knows how to get things done, a Maqsood sahib who married the ‘other woman’ because he couldn’t get the first one, a Hajra who knows that her husband loved someone else yet is devoted to him, their daughter who wants to live peacefully without any drama in her life and a youngster who was incarcerated for someone else’s crime. What writer Bee Gul created here are characters with a backstory and director Kashif Nisar added the believability with his magic touch, giving the viewers something to talk about. His treatment is more filmi than dramatic, and that’s what makes it interesting for the cinema-deprived audiences, like this scribe!
Who else could have played Hajra better than Sania Saeed, who cares about everyone else but her daughter’s feelings; using Hadiqa Kiani as Sakina was a masterstroke that only Kashif Nisar could have thought of, for she has been around for over two decades and could have acted whenever she wanted. However, like a true professional, she waited for the perfect role to launch her acting career and looks more Sakina than Hadiqa here. Naumaan Ijaz can play any role and has proved that in his illustrious career, and he does exactly that – making you want to root for Maqsood sahib even though the audience just got the tip of the mystery as to why he left Sakina and the village. The rest of the Raqeeb Se cast also has their characters well-defined, although these three take the lion’s share of the story.
And the best part is that the makers managed to hit the nerves of the audience without going overboard. They didn’t have to portray Sania Saeed’s Hajra as the antagonist who would try to kick out Sakina for interfering with her family life; they didn’t go for a violent Maqsood sahib who wouldn’t treat his ex just because she broke his heart. They went the most appropriate way and that was to keep it simple, effective, and romantic. That’s why the viewers are waiting for Raqeeb Se just like they used to wait for an Ashfaq Ahmed play, a Munnu Bhai drama, or a Haseena Moin serial back in the 1980s and the 1990s. For they knew what they would watch would be something classy, something closer to home, and something they would cherish for a long time.
Like a hard-worker and a true winner, she kept her eyes on the prize. And gradually, her fine performances showed everybody that she is one talented artist that will make it big in the entertainment world. Her rise has been slow but steady, smart, and smooth. One worthy project after the other, Nazish has proved that she is a force to be reckoned with.
Currently, she is grabbing all the eyeballs as Mirha in Dil Tanha Tanha and Namal in Saraab. Both her avatars are poles apart from each other and Nazish is equally doing justice to both her characters.
Spotlight sat down with Nazish to enjoy a tete-a-tete over her projects and what’s coming up next! Looks like silver screen glory next awaits our young starlet. Extracts from the interview are as follows.
It was a brilliant script. My role was an out and out positive one. It’s a perfection of how today’s girls are strong and confident. So I said yes immediately.
Saraab is a very important project for me. I have been a mental health awareness advocate for a decade and I continue to be one. It feels great to be a part of something so important.
It isn’t completely a negative character. It has its shades. I enjoy playing with such characters. They give you a lot of performance margin.
Show some empathy.

It’s a girl’s right to pursue her career. No girl should compromise on that. If people in your surroundings are supportive, it gets easier, but I think every girl out there should learn how to fight for her rights.
All are amazing actors, to begin with. I am happy to be given the chance to work with such amazing co-stars so early in my career.

Not at all. Every character in Saraab is equally important and gets enough screen time to prove their mettle. It was a pleasure to work with Sonya and she is a very dear friend now.
Truth always comes out at the end of the day, so I don’t worry about it at all. There is no power bigger than Allah SWT. As long as He is there for me, I’ve got nothing to worry about.
There is a film and I am waiting patiently for its release. I have also started shooting for a new drama serial.
Even in its 16th year as Pakistan’s number one drama channel, HUM TV continues to air meaningful content that is suitable for the entire family. Their latest project Phaans just released its OST and teasers and would be coming soon to your screens with an ensemble cast that will make your day. Before moving ahead, let’s take a look at the soulful OST composed by (music composer) Sami Khan and sung by the talented Rimsha Khan.
As you can see, Sami Khan (actor) and Shehzad Sheikh will be leading the cast but the bulk of the scenes seem to feature Zara Noor Abbas, who returns with a bang as a simple girl, instead of the usual glorified one. In a few scenes, she looks like a vision whereas, in others, she seems depressed for some reason that would be revealed to the viewers once the drama airs. She might or might not be the bone of contention between the two handsome hunks, but with Yashma Gill also in the frame, there seems to be something cooking that no one knows about.
Written by Samina Ejaz and directed by Syed Ahmed Kamran, Phaans seems like an interesting story with twists, turns, and drama rolled into one. Zara Noor Abbas spoke to Spotlight about her character and termed it as something she hasn’t done before.
According to the Ehd-e-Wafa actress, ‘The character in Phaans is something I have not done before, and it has brought a lot of emotional strength for me. I remember I was at a very weak point in my life when I signed the play and started shooting for it and over the entire process of it, gained all that strength within me that I thought I had lost.”
While talking about the story, Zara Noor Abbas added “Phaans is about everyone who has once lost to the system and takes all strength again to fight against all odds, against the world. Against power.”
Strong words indeed. The actress also credits her director for being supportive during the shoot and dedicates all the hard work to him. “I have had an amazing time shooting the project with my co-actors. Especially my director Syed Ahmed Kamran, who has been very very supportive throughout the project. I would like to dedicate all hard work to him on this one.”
The teasers also highlight a new kid on the block who looks like Shehzad Sheikh. Wait – that is Shehzad Sheikh, who seems to have de-aged somehow and looks quite young when compared to his last few projects. He plays a character who is not normal and is treated affectionately by all, except for his father played by Ali Tahir, who looks cross in a few sequences that feature in the OST with his son.
While talking to Spotlight, the actor disclosed that he plays Sahil who is an autistic boy and has difficulty in coping with people around him. ‘This character is something I haven’t played before; it’s that of a boy who’s autistic and has difficulties coping with people around him. Sahil has been a challenge for me only, I hope that I’ve put some soul in the character and now the audience will be the best judge.”
While talking about the ensemble cast, he said that he had a great time, especially since he was sharing the screen with most of the people for the first time. “It’s my first time working with Sami, Zara, Yashma, Ali Tahir, and Arjumand – everyone has been very cooperative and phenomenal to work with. Really looking forward to Phaans!”
And then there is the versatile Sami Khan, who plays a good guy one day, a bad guy another, and a guy with shades of both on the rest of the occasions. With Dulhan and Saraab already doing well on HUM TV, where the viewers are loving his work, here comes Phaans where nobody is sure what side he is on. And he is in no mood to disclose whether we should love him or hate him in the play.
“Unlike Dulhan and Saraab, Phaans is a different project that revolves around an incident that changes the lives of those involved,” Sami Khan told Spotlight when approached for a comment on his upcoming play. “I am one of the characters who are part of the mystery that will keep the audience intrigued in the initial episodes. Am I innocent or am I guilty? That’s the suspense that will keep Phaans interesting.”
Interesting and intriguing both, and with Ahmed Kamran as the director, things will fold nicely at their own pace. Sami Khan also hailed his co-stars with whom he was sharing the screen for the first time, but since they clicked on the project, it helped them all immensely. “Working with Zara and Shehzad was a wonderful experience as was with director Ahmed Kamran. When the team you work with gives their 100 percent it makes the project all the more memorable and I am hopeful that Phaans also wouldn’t disappoint the audience.”
With talented actors Yashma Gill, Arjumand Rahim, Kinza Malik, Mariam Mirza, Zain Afzal, and others in the cast, Phaans promises to be entertaining as well as educative to the HUM TV viewers. Will Sahil save the day for Zara Noor Abbas’ character, why is his father suspicious of everyone and what is Sami Khan’s relationship with these characters, wait for a few days to get clarity and become part of the mystery!
