Imran Ashraf’s Moosa – Half Action Hero, Half Romantic!

HUM TV’s Raqs e Bismil is currently one of the most-watched dramas on TV. Written by Hashim Nadeem and directed by Wajahat Rauf, the serial takes the audience into a land where honesty is a superpower, love is pure, and the characters have depth. Why did we choose its main protagonist Moosa for the ‘Character of the Week’ is not a secret, since he shows different shades every now and then. From an obedient son to a religious family to a hopeless romantic who befriends a paan wala, he transforms due to love, and in his mind, he is doing it for the right reasons.

Is Moosa leading all hopeless romantics in the right direction?

When Moosa ruined the secret wedding of his cousin sister Sakina (Anoushay Abbasi) in the very first episode, he wasn’t introduced to love. When she prayed in the same episode that she hopes that Moosa doesn’t end up with the person he would love, he had no clue how it would change his life. He met, he saw, and he fell in love with Zohra (Sarah Khan) and then wanted to marry her, despite the fact that he was engaged to Sitara (Faria Hasan). After the intervention of his mother (Nida Mumtaz), he stopped pursuing Zohra but that changed him in a way that nobody expected. He became angrier, was irritated by the simplest of things, and was suspicious of all, something that happens to hopeless romantics all over the world. Moosa isn’t leading them in the right direction but merely following them; his end might not be the same as their end but at the moment, he is the poster boy for those who have loved and failed.

What makes Moosa worth discussing in a multi-starrer drama?

Moosa is not your ordinary protagonist; in the days of young boys dating younger girls, or older men falling in love with beautiful women, he loves his mother more than anything else in the world, obeys his father’s rules, and cares for her younger brother. That was before he set his eyes on Zohra, because after that the police came into his house, his father had to visit a police station to bail him out and his mother had to visit Zohra’s place, something no one in her family had done before. With actors like Mahmood Aslam and Nida Mumtaz playing his parents, newcomer Momin Saqib his brother, and Javeria and Anoushay Abbasi playing his aunt and cousin, it was always going to be a challenge for even Imran Ashraf to stay on top of his game. But that’s exactly what he did, and now when anyone thinks of Raqs e Bismil, the first thought that comes into mind is either Moosa or Zohra. The rest follow later, and that’s what makes this character worth a discussion!

Why is Moosa a different kind of character currently on TV?

When was the last time you saw a character on TV who had his heart broken at the start of the episode and was ready to break legs by the end of it? That’s Moosa for you who despite being rejected by his ideal woman was there to save his brother’s wife for the second time in ten weeks. She might have thought that he will not find her but Moosa has his own ways; he got to the place where she had gone to escape her in-laws and reached the place in the nick of time to save her honor, and his brother’s. Also, the way he pursued Zohra was stuff dreams are made of and kept approaching her in order to convince her that he was the right man for her. His words affected her so much that after rejecting him, she couldn’t think of anyone else but him, and that’s not a common sight on our TV screens!

How different is Moosa from Imran Ashraf’s other characters?

There are two kinds of actors in Pakistan; those who play one memorable character and wait for the next one and those who make every character memorable. Imran Ashraf falls in the second category and since Alif Allah Aur Insaan, has been making a name for himself as the human chameleon. Even in Raqs e Bismil, he grew a beard, gained weight, and moved around with anger on his face to look different from Adam who was saving lives in Mushk on Saturdays while Moosa was destroying them on Fridays. And if you take a step down memory lane, there are characters like Bhola, Zaid, and Rehan Chaudhry (from Ranjha Ranjha Kardi, Jaal and Inkaar respectively) who were nothing like Moosa or Adam in appearance or in stature!

How should Moosa’s story in Raqs e Bismil end?

Moosa should end with Zohra and no one else; we are living in the 21st century and if two adults are in love, belong to the same religion, and vow to keep each other happy, there should be no law that should stop them from getting married. Yes, his parents got him engaged to Sitara but he had not asked them to do so; they also had an ulterior motive in this ‘match-making’ and with Moosa no more the heir to his father’s throne, the engagement should be called off. Sitara might find someone else but Moosa wouldn’t and if he ends up without Zohra, it might be depicted as a victory for those who don’t believe in the evolution of love.
