‘My goal was to give Sakina life’: Hadiqa Kiani

Hadiqa Kiani is easily the most recognized female vocalist Pakistan has produced in the last two decades. After Nazia Hassan’s retirement from music in the early 90s, many female vocalists ventured into the business but none was able to match the grace, the diversity, and the hard work of Hadiqa Kiani, who is still around. Despite the music scene going down, she has kept going strong with her collaborations with international artists, her jingles, and above all, the countless OSTs that she has sung over the last ten years. However, the singing diva shocked her fans when she deglamorized herself for Kashif Nisar’s Raqeeb Se and played an elderly woman who was raised in a village, and is now a mother of a young girl (played by Iqra Aziz). Spotlight had a chat with Hadiqa Kiani about her foray into acting, why she took a long time to do something her fans always wanted her to do, and how she was able to stand her ground in front of legends like Naumaan Ijaz and Sania Saeed. Read on:

Why did it take more than 20 years for you to find the actress inside you? Your fans knew it from the moment you appeared on screen for the first time, as a vocalist?

I believe there is always a right time created by the Almighty. My inclination has always been toward music and my focus remains on music, but I wanted to expand my artistic horizon and learn more about myself through the art of acting.

Usually, singers who turn to act opt for a role that is closer to their own self, but you went to play a completely different person. Why?

I love to challenge myself and taking on a role that was the complete opposite of me was a great challenge. I had to entirely negate ‘Hadiqa Kiani’ and find Sakina, I had to find her within myself.

Hadiqa Kiani is a Diva … how did you manage to deglamorize her?

I don’t think I had any issues ‘deglamorizing’ myself. The distressed hair, makeup, and wardrobe helped aid the process to find Sakina and that was my only goal, to give her life.

For any actor, working with Naumaan Ijaz and Sania Saeed would be a challenge. How did you overcome that on your debut?

Naumaan and Sania are both legends and I am a huge fan of both of them. Facing them was a big challenge but our director, Kashif Nisar, made things much easier for me by putting us through to each other. So the fear factor went away and a human connection was introduced. Naumaan (Ijaz) and Sania (Saeed) guided me throughout the journey of this drama and put me at such ease, teaching me and making sure I was comfortable enough to perform my best.

Playing a mother that too of Iqra Aziz … how much inspiration did you take from your own experience as a mother?

There was great synergy between Iqra and me and I hope that shows on screen. She is a very focused and talented artist. My experience as a mother has been so different from that of Sakina and, as I said earlier, I had to negate myself and my experience to find Sakina. Sakina the woman, Sakina the mother, the wife, the friend, and so on.

Will we be seeing Hadiqa Kiani again as an actress in a TV drama after Raqeeb Se?

Yes, hopefully, if there will be something that will challenge me as an artist then I will surely do it. I must say this was the best cast, director, and writer I could’ve asked for so I was very lucky. The next project will have some high expectations to live up to.
