Maqsood Ahmed – Hopeless Romantic, Responsible Husband!

Had it not been for Naumaan Ijaz’s convincing performance, Maqsood Ahmed would have been just another character, stuck between two women. After all, that seems to be the most favorite subject of writers these days; but Raqeeb Se is a collaboration between two supremely talented individuals – Bee Gul and Kashif Nisar. In their plays, even a lesser-known character is important to the storyline, and Maqsood Ahmed here is the protagonist of Raqeeb Se. Just imagine his importance to the plot and how integral he would be to the story!

Is Maqsood Ahmed the ‘ultimate barricade’ no self-made man needs in his life?

When Abdul (Hamza Sohail) met Maqsood Ahmed on the insistence of his daughter Insha (Faryal Mehmood), the latter wasn’t in the best of moods. Later that day, before agreeing to the union, he told her that since he has struggled to become a successful man, he wouldn’t want his daughter to marry someone who is a loser in his eyes. His detest for ‘self-made’ men came as a shock to all including the audience who believed that since he was a self-made person himself, he would be happy to meet Abdul.

That’s just one part of Maqsood Ahmed’s life who doesn’t seem attached to his wife (Sania Saeed), interested in his daughter but is more concerned for the well-being of his old flame Sakina (Hadiqa Kiani) and her daughter Ameera (Iqra Aziz). From buying them new clothes to getting Ameera admitted to the local college, he has done everything that he should have done for his wife and daughter. Add to that the wonderful lines in his diary, and you have an exceptional combination of hopeless romantic, responsible husband!

What makes Maqsood Ahmed worth discussing in a multi-starrer drama?

In a drama where Sania Saeed is the wife, renowned singer Hadiqa Kiani is the ‘other woman’, Faryal Mehmood is the daughter of the leading character and the talented Iqra Aziz is the old flame’s mischievous daughter, being the only man is nothing short of a challenge. Even though he is the man of the house, the bone of contention between the two women, and the guy who suffered the most for no reason, Naumaan Ijaz stands out as Maqsood Ahmed. He is worried about Sakina and doesn’t let her return to the village; wants his wife and daughter to take care of them without thinking about them, and even ask Sakina whether she would marry him if his wife and daughter left him. He did make amends by making his wife sit in the front seat of the car, telling her that she is her companion and others are just the passengers!

Why is Maqsood Ahmed a different kind of character currently on TV?

When was the last time you saw a strong man in a drama who gave equal attention to his wife, daughter, and ex-flame? I don’t remember, especially because all three women get the same minimal attention from Maqsood Ahmed. He might be a peace-loving guy but he did travel to the village to warn Sakina’s abusive husband (Saqib Sumeer); made her send a notice for khula and looks after her despite having a family of his own. He is not a cheater like most of the male characters out there and doesn’t take advantage of Sakina and his daughter. However, he is a reserved person who doesn’t want anyone to come close to him and has been so since his breakup with Sakina twenty years ago. That makes him a real man, one who knows his boundaries, and that’s why we want him to succeed in whatever he is planning.

How different is Maqsood Ahmed from Naumaan Ijaz’s recent characters?

In Dunk, he was the college professor who took his life despite being innocent; in Dar Si Jati Hai Sila, he played the sexual harasser who looked innocent from the outside. Only someone with chameleonic abilities would have been able to do justice to both the characters and he did that without even breaking a sweat. Here his problem isn’t that he used to have feelings for her ex, but the fact that he has no feelings left at all. His character went to jail for a crime he didn’t commit; he left his village because he couldn’t handle the embarrassment, and when the reason for his destruction arrives at his home one fateful night, he forgets and forgives instead of taking revenge. That’s what real men do, and that’s why Maqsood Ahmed should be the Captain of the side that comprises of such noble characters.

How should Maqsood Ahmed’s story in Raqeeb Se end?

Maqsood Ahmed is the good guy here who wants to keep everyone happy; however, despite his good intentions, his family is slowly suffering. It would be great if he gets Sakina shifted to a safe place in the city where she and Ameera can live happily since it would save his family life. However, it seems that he wouldn’t do such a thing and might marry Sakina, causing a rift in the family. After all, he did have a weak moment with her when she brought him medicine, and he was about to touch her face when Hajra entered the room.

If he does marry Sakina, it might be a happy ending for the long lost lovers but it would have disastrous effect on the lives of his daughter, who is about to get married herself, and wife who seems to know too much about her husband’s old flame. Whatever decision he takes, it should have a positive effect on the family, because that’s what makes Maqsood Ahmed different from the rest of the men out there!
