March 23rd Special: Stories that will awaken your patriotism!

March 23rd, Pakistan Day will forever be a historic celebratory occasion for us!

Much to our dismay, we will not be able to commemorate it this year with the usual zeal and fervor. The annual Resolution Day Parade has also been called off- all thanks to the threat of Corona Virus looming high in the air.

But being passionate Pakistanis, nothing can dampen our spirit of patriotism. We can still celebrate the national day while being safe in our homes, munching on popcorn and hosting a family marathon of our favorite patriotic drama or movie.

Wondering what to stream and binge-watch during the holiday?

Here are some of the very best patriotic stories lined up for you to enjoy and bring out the nationalist in you, even after the entire city is holed up inside homes and public gatherings have been shunned for good!

Dastaan

If you need a reminder that why the establishment of this country has been a sheer blessing for us, watch Dastaan!

This drama is meticulously researched and is a realistic recap of the sacrifices our ancestors made to make the partition a reality and gift us with this wonder of a free nation called ‘Pakistan’. Its accurate description of hate crimes against Muslims in Pre-partition India, the importance of the two-nation theory and the struggle of the All India Muslim League will make you realize why our fore-fathers pursued the idea of Lahore Resolution in 1940.

It is one story that will break you into tears and make you weep uncontrollably. But Haissam Hussain’s skilled direction and Samira Fazal’s eloquent script based on Razia Butt’s novel will tempt you to watch it. And even show it to your children if they haven’t seen it yet!

Sunhere Din

Nothing can be better than reliving the golden days of Pakistani television with the timeless PTV drama ‘Sunhere Din’.

It is one of the crown jewels of the ’90s and the most avant-garde tribute to the country’s armed forces with its entertaining account of the lives of young trainees at Pakistani Military Academy in Kakul. We bet many of the millennials might not have even seen the evergreen drama, starring famous faces like Saleem Sheikh, Kiran, Aliya Kazmi, Hameed Waine, Mumtaz Musharraf, Azra Mansoor, and Malik Faraz.

Directed by Shoaib Mansoor, the story of a young boy ‘Safeer’ who gets enrolled in the army against the will of his mother is a light-hearted family masterpiece with a happy ending. The younger generation who are curious to know how army life is and how the crème de la crème of cadets train to become soldiers must watch it this Pakistan Day!

Alpha Bravo Charlie

Hands down, Alpha Bravo Charlie (ABC) will be the best drama in the history of Pakistan television. No project can even come near to it and it will remain a cult favorite of all generations.

Our millennials who might not even have watched Humsafar have viewed this iconic show and are unanimous die-hard aficionados of Kashif, Gulsher, and Faraz.  A prequel to Sunheri Din, ABC was yet again a brain-child of Shoaib Mansoor who will forever have the credit of gifting us a story, full of soul and substance. An account of three friends who are captains in the Pakistani army, the drama is close to every Pakistani’s heart cause of relatable life tracks of its leading characters.

Amidst humor, romance, tragedy, and patriotism, its story highlighted how selfless one has to be for the prosperity of humanity. It is not easy, but the trio of Kashif, Gulsher, and Faraz taught us the art of devotion, not only for your motherland but also for those close to your heart! Never pass up an opportunity to re-watch Alpha Bravo Charlie. It’s even better than you remembered.

Ehd e Wafa

All those who have seen the grand finale of Ehd e Wafa will agree that we need season two of this ground-breaking drama!

Fans of SSG just don’t ever want to bid farewell to this squad of best friends. But as they say- all good things come to end. And the drama’s last episode was one roller-coaster ride of emotions. So why not watch it all over again on Pakistan Day?

The end indeed made us proud to be Pakistani and pleased with the four characters who remained sincere to their homeland. Itsgutsy message that doing what’s right resonated well with the youth-making it a must-watch for a modern-day Pakistani.

Unlike Sunhere Din and ABC, Ehd e Wafa focused not just on the services of people belonging to the armed forces. It also highlighted how the politicians, bureaucrats, and civilians need to play their part collectively to make this nation a better place.

However, one thing common in all there dramas was the role of Captain Faraz, essayed by Faraz Inam. We have seen his character grow energetically and the actor himself acknowledges the love showered by the audience over the years.

Talking to Spotlight in an earlier interview, here’s what Faraz revealed about playing the timeless role.

The character of Gentleman Cadet Faraz, then Captain Faraz and now Brig. Faraz has stuck to me for life. This character was conceived in such a way that the viewers connected with him, thinking it is for real.

They never got enough of him, always wanting to know more about him and I guess that’s what kept him alive all these years through different generations.

Parwaz Hai Junoon

Having the honor of being the industry’s first-ever Airforce movie, Parwaz Hai Junoon is a searing tribute to the inner patriot thriving in the soul of every Pakistani!

It is a tale that celebrates the integrity of being a martyr for one’s homeland and serving the soil until one’s last breath. While it may appear as a romantic tragedy to some, the patriotic spirit in its narrative cannot be missed.

In its essence, the plot included a portrayal of Operation Zarb-e-Azb- truthfully describing how our brave PAF soldiers are devoted to sacrificing their lives to protect citizens from the onslaught of terrorists.

It is impossible not to feel pride for our top-notch PAF while watching the movie. In fact, for those who have always dreamt of serving the country’s air force and soaring the skies, Parwaz Hai Junoon is a perfect watch for them.

In an earlier interview with Hum Spotlight over the release of the movie, here’s what Hamza Ali Abbasi had to say about Parwaz Hai Junoon:

“Parwaaz Hai Junoon revolves around the life and times of those Air Force walas who serve their country round the clock and also stay away from their families to be vigilant and attentive at the borders. Everything that happens in the film is a tribute to the Pakistan Air Force as we get to fly, train with actual cadets and even visit places we usually saw on TV. I am certain that the film will make people realize that PAF is as important as the Pakistan Army and Pakistan Navy and will herald a new era of patriotic films.”
