Saraab is one of the ‘thinking’ dramas on air these days on HUM TV with the writer Edison Idrees Masih creating a character unlike any before – Asfandyar.
Played by Sami Khan, and immortalized by his excellent chemistry with Sonya Hussyn, Asfandyar is a double-edged sword for a valid reason. The one who is in front of his relatives and friends is the one who is cool and calm in extremely tense situations, the other who is only visible to Hoorain (Sonya Hussyn) is the one who is creating all problems. Why others can’t see this version of him, and why he speaks only to Hoorain, that is a mystery well-handled by the writer and director.
Who Is Asfandyar so loveable and detestable at the same time?
Asfandyar (Sami Khan) is a likable guy who is in love with his first cousin Hoorain (Sonya Hussyn); unknown to him, Hoorain’s elder sister Namal (Nazish Jahangir) also cares for him but backs out when she realizes that he and Hoorain might be in love. He suspects that there is something wrong with Hoorain because whenever the two meet, she speaks about a previous meeting between the two that never happened.
It is by chance that Asfandyar realizes that there might be some psychological issue with Hoorain and that’s why he defies his father’s orders and visits a mazaar in interior Sindh where he saves Hoorain from being ‘raped’. Things go from bad to worse when Hoorain’s parents find out that their daughter left the mazaar with Asfandyar and start blaming his parents for the situation, when in fact Asfandyar had taken her to a doctor who confirmed his suspicions of a mental illness. The doctor tells him that Hoorain might be hallucinating stuff that might sound like she is making stuff when in fact in her mind, that is actually happening.
What Hoorain hallucinates is an alternate version of Asfandyar who visits her every now and then, advises her the way she wants to, and then disappears as soon as another person enters the scene. Despite being engaged to Warda’s brother in law (Jahanzeb Khan), the real Asfandyar cares for Hoorain and informs his mother (Kinza Malik) about her condition and she is shocked on learning that her own niece is suffering from Schizophrenia, and her son wants to marry her to save her. Quite noble, isn’t it?
What makes Asfandyar worth discussing?
Every drama has a protagonist but Saraab is different because of Asfandyar who is not the average hero; he is above average for two reasons. One, he understands the problem and wants to stand by it, and second, he is the problem. So far, he has just figured out that Hoorain makes up things in her own way, what he hasn’t realized is that it is he who she hallucinates and that his hallucinated version advises her to do or not to do something.
The way Sami Khan has performed both the roles is commendable as the one who is real, cares about Hoorain but also respects his parents who believe in him; the other one doesn’t care about the consequences of his actions because he isn’t real and doesn’t have to stand with Hoorain when she is in trouble.
Both the Asfandyar’s have different mannerisms, walk and talk as if they are separate people, and even address Hoorain in a different way. The real one talks like he wants to know her, the hallucinated one speaks as if he knows everything about her.
Why Asfandyar’s parents are on his side, and Hoor’s against him?
Asfandyar’s parents (Sajid Shah and Kinza Malik) have raised him to the best of their abilities; while he defies his father’s orders to save Hoorain, his mother is on his side because ‘she knows’. He is a man of the modern world and that’s something his own uncle and aunt (Hoorain’s parents played by Aurangzeb Leghari and Farida Shabbir) don’t realize because of their backward thinking.
For them, taking Hoorain to a baba is the best way to cure her, for him taking her to the doctor is. He is the only one in the two families who knows that she is suffering from a mental disorder and wants to stand by her in this difficult time, but since no one else believes him in Hoorain’s house, they are against him.
Is Asfandyar’s Character Different from Sami Khan’s Other Characters?
Currently, Sami Khan is part of two HUM TV dramas – Saraab and Dulhan. In the former, he is playing the extremely caring and respectful guy who would do anything for his girl. In the latter, he is the spoilt brat who doesn’t care about the consequences of his actions even if it led to someone’s death. He stalked a girl, asked her father to get them married, and then left her alone in the room for his friend so that he could win his sports car.
Just think of it, both the characters are as different as the North and South Pole and while we are cheering for Asfandyar in Saraab we are secretly hoping that things should go ‘south’ for Mikaal in Dulhan.
How Should Asfandyar’s Story in Saraab End?
The Asfandyar she hallucinates should fade away for good because he is the reason why Hoorain is disturbed all the time; the Asfandyar in front of her and everyone else deserves to be happy because he wants to save her, and care for her despite her condition.
They should get married because Hoorain is made for Asfandyar and Asfandyar is made for Hoorain. No other person should come in between, or they would not be able to face the consequences.
