Some of the best dramas blessed us with not only memorable stories but also with magical musical moments with their Original Soundtracks (OSTs) that we became hooked to. We heard a crop of outstanding title tracks that we couldn’t stop humming to and provided us with a mini-escape from the turmoil of our pandemic-stricken lives.
Consequently, team Spotlight sat down to curate a list of chart-topping OSTs that were melodically beautiful and, we bet, will be remembered for years to come!

Singers: Sahir Ali Bagga & Afshan Fawad
Lyrics: Imran Raza
Why this OST is a hit: The drama had its fair share of critics and fans, but one thing everyone loved about Mohabbat Tujhe Alvida was its OST — its proof being that it was the most viewed and heard song of all this year!
With Sahir Ali Bagga & Afshan Fawad taking the place behind the mic, the hauntingly painful track rightly depicts the obsession of a soul drenched in love and the restlessness of a lover’s heart. Its lyrics are moving and vulnerable all at once, making the song an ineffable reminder that love is all about submission and devotion.
Lyrics: Ali Moin
Singers: Ahmad Jahanzaib & Mahnoor Khan
Why this OST is a hit: The harmonium opening, the dramatic violin music, the peppy vibe, and cute, romantic lyrics make Pyar Ke Sadqay stand-out from all the OSTs from this list.
Its composition has an old-school touch that prompt you to break into a slow-waltz with your beloved. What’s more, who knew that the duet between Ahmed Jehanzib and Mahnoor Khan would be so epic and well-paralleled that it would warm up our soul.
The sweet and blissful finishing whistle marks a soft end to the track, concluding it on a chirpy note and bringing joy to the hearts of the listeners.
Lyrics: Kashif Anwar
Singer: Ali Sethi
Why this OST is a hit: Ali Sethi can never go wrong with a musical rendition and, hands down, no one could have sung a slow, peaceful track like Sabaat better than him. His voice melts like butter in your ear. Balancing both the high and low notes in the track, Sethi’s vocals make you ponder about the intricacies of life and things we need to tell our loved ones before it’s too late. After all, the lyrics of the track have a high emotional punch — thought-provoking and quite heartbreaking.
The OST has a classical yet contemporary feel. All credit goes to Naveed Nashad’s composition who continues to innovate, bringing diversity in all of his tunes.
Lyrics: Sabir Zafar
Singer: Nirmal Roy & Shani Arshad
Why this OST is a hit: Perhaps Dil Ruba’s OST is the dreamiest of all in the list.
The part of the track sung by Nirmal Roy is all about being a carefree bird enjoying its freedom. On the contrary, Shani Arshad’s segment of the OST is more of a lover’s complaint to his beloved about being heartless and a reckless devotee.
The soundtrack was composed keeping in mind Dil Ruba’s plot where the heroine, Sanam, is a frivolous partner toying with the hearts of so many men. Meanwhile, the boys who genuinely adored her got hurt in the process.
Consequently, there is a transition of lyrics, tune, and vibe in the OST. But Nirmal and Shani’s beautiful voices seamlessly create a blend of mood, making it one of the most viewed songs on the list.
Singer: Ali Zafar, Asim Azhar, Sahir Ali Bagga and Aima Baig
Lyrics: Imran Raza
Why this OST is a hit: Making rounds since 2019, Ehd e Wafa’s soundtrack remained even popular in 2020!
It’s been ages since we were blessed with an ‘ultimate Dosti’ song and Ehd-e-Wafa’s OST was no less than a sweet treat that friends of all time and ages are bound to love!
Like its ensemble cast, the squad of its title track’s singers is equally star-studded with Ali Zafar, Aima Baig, Asim Azhar, and Sahir Ali Bagga united for this stunning, lively tune.
The drama’s OST carries on to reap love like its poignant story which has become a hit in the country.
Lyrics: Aehsun Talish
Singer: Ali Zafar
Why this OST is a hit: Like its name, the drama’s OST, crooned by Ali Zafar, has the power of spreading its musical fragrance everywhere. There is an intimacy of a sort in the masterpiece that leaves you spellbound, compelling you to put it on repeat. When the track ends and the spell breaks, you can’t help but marvel at its captivating composition and moving lyrics.
The team of Aehsun Talish, Naveed Nashad, and Ali Zafar succeeded in delivering something fresh and a melody, that appears a fusion of both eastern and western music. Talking about the song to Spotlight in an earlier interview, Ali Zafar revealed:
‘I was approached by the composer of the song Naveed Nashad to render his composition, which I liked. However, unlike in the pre-COVID-19 days, we couldn’t sit together and record it since I was in quarantine. So we did it through FaceTime which becomes a little difficult for the singer as I had to hear the instructions then press record stand in front of the mic and then he would have to hear it through the phone audio and express his satisfaction on the kind of expression etc. he wanted, and I had to listen, sing and record me which can be quite technical. Since the creation is of the composer, one must deliver to what he has in mind if not better. But I am glad that he and people, in general, are loving it.’
The year 2020 is about to end, and with it will end a fabulous run of HUM TV dramas that kept the audience glued to their seats all year round. From Ehd-e-Wafa and Yeh Dil Mera that carried on from 2019, to Mushk and Saraab that will welcome 2021 with interesting episodes, every drama this year raised the bar in its own manner. Let’s go through some of the best HUM TV dramas that came, were watched, and conquered the viewers.
Writer: Shahid Nizami
Director: Shamoon Abbasi, Najaf Bilgrami
Cast: Ali Ansari, Noor Zafar Khan, Naveen Waqar, Usama Khan, Samina Ahmed, Adnan Jaffar, Naveed Raza & Others.
Chalawa is one of the few plays where the writer and director deliberately stepped into ‘horror’ territory and came out victorious. Co-directed by Shamoon Abbasi and Najaf Bilgrami, it brings back the ‘90s vibes where up and coming directors would attempt something new, instead of following the run of the mill stuff. The story revolves around a possessed young girl who has supernatural powers and is a danger to herself and to those close to her.
Writer: Adeel Razzaq
Director: Adeel Siddiqui
Cast: Sami Khan, Sumbul Iqbal, Faizan Khawaja, Mashal Khan, Shaheen Khan, Nida Mumtaz
Don’t go by the name. Dulhan is a thriller that came out at the right time to save 2020. With Sami Khan, Sumbul Iqbal, Mashal Khan and Faizan Khawaja in the lead, it focuses on two boys who came up with an unusual bet, one that destroyed the life of a girl. How the girl stages her comeback and grows from a weak person to someone ready to take them head-on is what makes the play special.
Writer: Qaisera Hayat
Director: Ali Hassan
Cast: Hania Aamir, Mohib Mirza, Nabeel Zuberi, Laila Wasti, Marina Khan, Durr e Shehwar, Shahroz Sabzwari, Syed Jibran, Ghana Ali
Hania Aamir delivered a superlative performance as Sanam, a happy go lucky girl who gets married many times over because of her novel approach to love. While her first husband dies and she agrees to marry a rich guy for security, things move way too fast for her to lose everything she had built; how she manages to steer away from problems make Dil Ruba worth your while.
Writer: Mustafa Afridi
Director: Saife Hasan
Cast: Ahad Raza Mir, Ahmed Ali Akbar, Osman Khalid Butt, Wahaj Ali, Alizeh Shah, Hajra Yamin, Faraz Inam, Vaneeza Ahmed, Naeema Butt
Ehd-e-Wafa is the journey of four friends who began their friendship in college and took it to another level by the time they were back in the same vicinity, not as students but as honorable guests. They fought with each other, they planned against each other but in the end, they couldn’t live without each other, making Ehd-e-Wafa something one shouldn’t miss at any cost.
Writer: Imran Nazir
Director: Danish Nawaz
Cast: Junaid Khan, Hira Mani, Waseem Abbas, Munza Arif, Hajra Khan, Samina Ahmed, Saleem Miraj, Lubna Aslam
Kashf was one of the most-watched TV dramas of the year because it broke the taboo and discussed those elements of religion that exploit people for their own monetary gains. Junaid Khan and Hira Mani were excellent throughout the serial and kept the audience engaged although the climax left the viewers disappointed.
Writer: Imran Ashraf
Director: Aehsun Talish
Cast: Imran Ashraf, Mawra Hocane, Momal Sheikh, Osama Tahir, Manzoor Qureshi, Aehsun Talish, Raza Talish, Seher Khan, Zara Tareen, Hasan Ahmed
Mushk takes you back into the classic era of PTV where the plot revolved around an ensemble cast and things resolved in the very last episode. Both Aehsun Talish and Imran Ashraf must be commended for giving Mushk their best, and the effort is visible in the near-perfect execution of the drama. Every actor is fit in his or her character whereas Imran Ashraf’s dialogues are worth a meme — a constructive, positive and productive meme!
Writer: Zanjabeel Asim Shah
Director: Farooq Rind
Cast: Bilal Abbas, Yumna Zaidi, Omair Rana, Atiqa Odho, Yashma Gill, Srha Asgr, Salma Hasan
HUM TV continued to highlight mental health issues even in 2020 with Pyar Ke Sadqay, where Bilal Abbas and Yumna Zaidi played a couple that had nothing in common. One was traumatized as a child by his stepfather while the other was a little slow in grasping everything. Together, they managed to brave the efforts of his stepfather to come up on top, and save each other in the process.
Writer: Kashif Anwar
Director: Shehzad Kashmiri
Cast: Mawra Hocane, Ameer Gilani, Sarah Khan, Usman Mukhtar, Moazzam Ali Khan, Leyla Zuberi, Azra Mansoor, Jahanzeb Khan, Mohammad Ahmed, Seemi Raheal, Kashif Anwar
Everyone knew that actress Sarah Khan’s girl next door charisma made her a crowd favourite; however not many knew that when given the opportunity, she could make the audience hate her. As Miraal, she made life hell for her folks that included her grandmother, her parents, her brother and his wife beside her own husband who stayed with her till she reformed in the end, but not after everything she planned backfired, leaving her with nothing.
Writer: Edison Idrees Masih
Director: Mohsin Talat
Cast: Sami Khan, Sonya Hussain, Aurangzeb Laghari, Farida Shabbir, Ghana Ali, Nazish Jehangir, Sajid Shah, Kinza Malik
In an era of illogical dramas, be like Saraab since it makes the audience aware of a condition that exists in people around us, but we don’t accept it as one. In this psychological thriller Sonya Hussyn plays Hoorain who suffers from schizophrenia and doesn’t know the difference between an illusion and a person in front of her. What makes it all the more interesting is the fact that both the illusion and reality are one and the same person, her husband.
Writer: Farhat Ishtiaq
Director: Aehsun Talish
Cast: Ahad Raza Mir, Sajal Aly, Adnan Siddiqui, Farhan Ally Agha, Zarnish Khan, Mira Sethi, Paras Rabia Butt, Natasha Hussain, Maryam Mirza, Naima Khan
Ye Dil Mera could have been a blockbuster film had the makers went for it; it has elements of everything from a thriller flick, a suspenseful movie, a revenge saga, and a romantic film all combined into one. Since Ahad Raza Mir and Sajal Aly got married during the airing of the drama, it made the audience more curious, and they wanted a happy ending, which they didn’t get in the end.
All these rising stars needed was that one ground-breaking project to achieve the spotlight. Fortunately, various dramas on Hum TV provided this fresh batch of stars the right platform to unveil their talent and made them the subject of positive conversations in 2020.
Check out some of the fastest-risers in the drama industry that made headlines this year and showed the immense potential to reach the top. You may already identify some of them. However, if not, it won’t be long before you do.
Where you have seen her: Pyar Kay Sadqay, Ek Jhooti Love Story
Her rise to fame: She might have appeared in various dramas before, but it was Pyar Kay Sadqay that was her big break on our T.V screens this year. As the bold and beautiful Washma, Srha proved that she possesses a massive ability to mold herself seamlessly into her characters.
We loved how she did justice to her rebellious role and kept the fire in her eyes to tell the world that we need to stand up against harassers like Sarwar.
She is quirky, cute with a megawatt smile, and has killer moves, making social media crazy about her dance routines. What’s more, she was an equal dazzling in Zee5’s web-series EkJhooti Love Story. It is only a matter of time until Srha unlocks a leading role in an upcoming Pakistani movie and makes us even prouder.
Where you have seen him: Sabaat
His rise to fame: Hot, handsome, and unstoppable, Ameer Gilani has surely become a hot property ever since he seized the limelight as Hassan in Shehzad Kashmiri’s Sabaat.
While people might not have heard of him so much before this drama, a cursory glance at his career trajectory reveals that he made his debut with Log Kya Kahenge on Hum TV. But Sabaat turned out to be a colossal game-changer for the hero. With his lead role across MawraHocane, the heartthrob has carved a deep, lasting path for himself in the industry. As Hassan, we witnessed him transitioning from a stubborn son to a doting lover, a defiant brother to an insecure husband. But Ameer did it all so effortlessly, looking all swell and incredible on our-screen while at it.
Catapulting to stardom, Ameer later released a track on Sabaat which was penned, sung, and composed by him. We are already predicting that his career trail will be long and strong. Whatever he will do next, Ameer is sure to be a standout star.
Where you have seen her: Dil Tanha Tanha, Saraab
Her rise to fame: Controversies might keep chasing her, but NazishJehangir has held her high throughout and focused on making herself a force to be reckoned with. Her stunning features, porcelain skin, expressive eyes, and striking hair has made her amongst the most beautiful actresses on our screens this year.
But this starlet is beyond looks. She is a powerhouse of talent and that is evident from her acting stints in Saraab along with DilTanhaTanha. With her wise selection of projects, Nazish is reaping all the positive limelight that she surely deserves after years of hard work.
Many people might not be aware, but NazishJehangir also made an appearance in Alif Allah AurInsaanis the art student ‘Roshni’. She later worked on a spree of projects but 2020 is surely her lucky year.
We are hopeful that we will see a whole lot more of the star in 2021.
Where you have seen him: Be Adab, Raqs e Bismil
His rise to fame: Devastatingly cool, extremely hilarious, and sure to be an on-screen boom, MominSaqib made his big television debut with Be Adab this year.
We have been seeing his social media shenanigans going viral for quite some time. And it was surely a breath of fresh air when he donned the role of a young, submissive, and obedient ‘Rohail’ in Be Adab. Quite contrary to his real-life self, Momin’s first acting stint surely must have been a big challenge for him. So far, the up and coming young actor has pulled off a satisfactory portrayal of his character. But Momin has a long way to go, with even bigger projects in the pipeline ready for him.
Next, we will see the hero in Wajahat Rauf’s Raqs e Bismil. With big names like Imran Ashraf, Sarah Khan, and Mehmood Aslam in the cast, Momin has surely unlocked a massive project so early in his career. Will he leave the audience craving for more in the upcoming year? Let’s wait and watch!
Where you have seen him: Sabaat
His rise to fame:The most senior star in the list of our rising actors but probably the most brilliant of the lot, Moazzam Ali Khan is that one artist who possesses unimaginable talent.
Many people might not be aware, but the actor is the great-grandson of the first Prime Minister of Pakistan SahibzadaLiaquat Ali Khan. While we would have imagined him stepping into politics, it seems like acting is his real game and he proved it as the haughty Seth Fareed in Sabaat. He molded himself so flawlessly in the character that it didn’t even seem that he was making his actingdebut in Sabaat. He appeared like a Rajaon-screen who has been the king of his art all along. Even wonderful are his poetic narrations that entice you to never stop listening to him.
It is safe to assume that we will see him in more projects in the New Year. We are ready to watch him shine all the more
With all the hype and hoopla, the story’s first episode did justice to the high expectations set from the project. After all, with Shazia Wajahat and Wajahat Rauf backing it, a power-packed cast featuring in it, and the veteran Hashim Nadim penning its plot; Raqs-e-Bismal appears as an ultimate blockbuster package of a drama.
So much so, it’s fast-paced pilot episode left us craving for more- especially to see more of Sarah Khan who appeared in the last few minutes before the end. Let’s take a quick review of what happened last night in the much-awaited Raqs-e-Bismil.
Our tale begins with the head of a Syed family, Peer Qudrat Ullah Shah (Mehmood Aslam) delivering a sermon in his ‘Astana’. Spotted in the crowd are his sons ‘Musa’ (Imran Ashraf) and ‘Isa’ (Momin Saqib). However, a messenger distracts them from the religious address and we see the intimidating pair, in all their fury, rushing to a deserted location.
Apparently, they have been informed that their cousin ‘Sakina’ (Anoushey Abbasi) is marrying her non-Syed lover in secret. Ambushing the Nikkah and threatening to kill all the men involved in making it happen, Musa takes Sakina back to their home where he exposes her in front of the entire family. Clearly, it’s against the law for the women in the tribe to fall in love, let alone with someone who is not from their cast.
Our hero has almost tied his cousin to the tree and is about to punish her. But he is stopped by her aunt ‘Sakina’s mother’ (Javeria Abbasi), who is also his foster mother, to spare her daughter. Musa, who is his father’s Jaanasheen, releases Sakina but still, his strict morals refuse to forgive her. But the worse is yet to happen to Sakina. She is forced by Peer Qudrat to tie the knot to her cousin Isa to save her honor and further humiliation. Unlike his brother Musa, Isa has a soft heart. He feels for Sakina and agrees to marry her upon his father’s order.
Sakina is shattered and heart-broken. On the day of her wedding, she curses Musa that may he love someone so as intensely as she loved, only to be separated from his beloved and writhe in pain from the separation.
The tormenting warning does not affect Musa. He remains stone-hearted, cruel, and pitiless- unaware of what the future has in store for him. Little did he know, that in the upcoming days he too will fall in love just with the mere sight of a woman’s enticing eyes.
Here we are introduced to Sarah Khan. Dressed in veil from head-to-toe, she meets Musa on a bus ride and our hero gets lost in her enchanting gaze as she saves him from being attacked by a mob.
The promo of the next episode shows Musa proposing his ladylove. We also see a glimpse of Sarah looking breath-taking in her heavy jhumkas and deeply-kohled eyes. Who is she and what challenges will arise with her entry into Moosa’s life? Can’t wait to know it all.
Raqs-e-Bismal’s first episode was no less than impeccable. Hashim Nadeem has weaved immense depth in the story, especially in the character of Musa.
He is hard-core, authoritarian, and stern; but the love of those close to them has the influence to soften them. He listens to his foster mother to spare Sakina and even respects his mother’s wishes to not punish the men involved in her secret Nikkah. But he is a man of his morals. He takes his duty of being his father’s successor to heart and perhaps that’s why he has taken it as his responsibility to ensure that the women of his family are protected. He, however, doesn’t realize that he is suffocating the females in this process, biding them to unnecessary rules and a conservative mindset. Portraying it all so seamlessly is Imran Ashraf. From his bad-boy looks to his body language, the actor has made us fall in love with his brashness, vigor, and ferociousness of Musa. From being a softie Adam in Mushk to a stringent Musa in Raqs-e-Bismal, Imran Ashraf surely has an appeal to allure audiences like no one can!
Mehmood Aslam essays the patriarch Peer who is equally robust and hot-headed. He carries himself with the forbidding aura and power that his character demands. No one can mess with Peer Qudrut Ullah and Aslam has portrayed it immaculately in all the scenes.
We also loved Anoushey Abbasi’s performance in the episode. The rebellious streak of her character was quite evident in the actress’s eyes and so was the helplessness when she was being sent into a forceful marriage. She pulled off being the damsel in distress, making sure her acting appears natural and looking striking while at it.
Momin Saqib’s performance is even better than that in Be Adab. He appeared at ease with his avatar of Isa, who is trying to be his self under his brother’s shadow. It is for sure that he is hero material and we are eager to see him explore his talent all the more in the future.
The tales penned by Hashim Nadeem always have immense potential and are remembered for years to come. We are expecting Raqs-e-Bismal to enjoy a similar flourishing fate. Teamed with Wajahat Rauf, his novel is bound to be a masterpiece, with excellent cinematography of every scene.
It is obvious that audience will watch the drama. It can be the star power of Sarah Khan and Imran Ashraf to be the initial driving force. But only its intriguing story and powerful execution will steer it to ultimate success.
Another year, another triumph, that’s how one would describe HUM Network’s victory at the Lux Style Awards 2020, where took all the major awards, as always. From Kashif Nisar’s Ranjha Ranjha Kardi to Inkaar, and Farooq Rind’s Ishq Zah e Naseeb, every hit drama from 2019 was nominated and took back at least one award. There were more when it came to the film category where Mahira Khan surprised all by bagging both the viewer’s choice and the Critics award for her performance in Superstar. Let’s analyze the wins and find out why these ‘winners’ went back home with a trophy, and others didn’t.
Best TV Actor – Viewer’s Choice: Imran Ashraf
Best TV Actress – Critics: Iqra Aziz
Best Play Director: Kashif Nisar
Best Play Writer: Faiza Iftikhar
Best Original Sound Track: JB Sisters/Rahma Ali, Composed and Produced by Sami Khan
Was there any play better than Ranjha Ranjha Kardi aired in 2019? Was any play more worthy of the awards than Ranjha Ranjha Kardi was? No. Because it was not just a play that entertained the audience but also highlighted the evils in our society. It not just heralded Imran Ashraf from a ‘forever supporting actor’ to the ‘main league’ but also showed the world that performance matters, not the actors giving that performance. Also, to stand in front of Imran Ashraf as Bhola was a tough task and Iqra Aziz achieved that by giving the best performance of her career. By winning the Critics award for Best Actress, she managed to do what not many had done before – win three awards in two years at the Lux Style Awards (last year she won both the Jury and Viewer’s Choice Awards at LSA for Suno Chanda).
Let’s talk about Faiza Iftikhar who wrote the script and director Kashif Nisar who directed it; they both had one person in mind for Bhola and since they knew who was the best person for the role, they all clicked together. Faiza’s script was executed to perfection by Kashif Nisar who bagged his second consecutive director’s award in two years (last year being for Darr Si Jaati Hai Sila). And then there was the marvelous OST by Sami Khan (not the actor, but the music composer) who collaborated with JB Sisters and Rahma Ali to come up with something that matched Ranjha Ranjha Kardi’s stature.
Best Film Actress – Critic’s Choice & Viewer’s Choice: Mahira Khan
Mahira Khan’s Superstar was one of the most successful films of 2019, and her getting the twin awards – both by Viewers and Critics – wasn’t surprising at all. Her competition was tough especially with Mansha Pasha and Amna Ilyas from Laal Kabootar and Baaji respectively, while Meera was also in the race for Baaji yet nobody could top Mahira’s popularity for she continues to represent Pakistan internationally, making us all proud. Written by Mustafa Afridi and directed by Ehteshamuddin, Superstar was a story of a young girl who becomes a ‘Superstar’ because of her hard work, resilience, and ability to adapt to changing trends. Add to that her dance performances, her hard-hitting ‘Tamasha Hai Tau Tamasha Hi Sahi’ dialogues and her ability to hold her ground opposite Nadeem Baig, Bilal Ashraf and others, she deserved to win the award(s).
Best TV Actress – Viewer’s Choice: Yumna Zaidi
For those who saw Zafar Mairaj’s Inkaar, there was no doubt that anybody other than Yumna Zaidi would win the Best TV Actress award. She played the character of a girl who is nearly stabbed to death by her former boyfriend on the night of her wedding but survives to take him to court. She was brilliant as Hajra from the first episode where she falls in love with Imran Ashraf’s Rehan Chaudhry, who turns out to be ‘looking out’ for his friend Shayan (Sami Khan) who was the one in love with Hajra. She plays the love interest of both the boys, and after she chooses the good one over the evil, her life changes as Rehan Chaudhry goes mad and stabs her with scissors 25 times. How she doesn’t forgive him after recovering and stands up against him in court is what made Yumna Zaidi stand tall over all the other nominees.
Best TV Actor – Critics: Zahid Ahmed
Luck favors the brave and Zahid Ahmed’s brave decision to play a man suffering from split personality disorder helped him get his first Lux Style Award for Best TV Actor. He not only changed the way actors are looked at in Pakistan but also proved to the world that when a leading man is talented, he can play any character conceived by the writer. With Sonya Hussyn, Sami Khan, Yumna Zaidi, and Zarnish Khan in important roles, Zahid Ahmed was simply superb as both Sameer and Sameera in this Hashim Nadeem play, which was directed to perfection by Farooq Rind. His ability to excel in both the characters – male and female – and pull it off successfully was one of the main reasons why he went home with the trophy.
