He may be in his early 20s but Azaan Sami Khan is a bright young lad who knows that he has a huge responsibility on his shoulders, considering he is the star son of veteran actress Zeba Bakhtiar and music maestro Adnan Sami Khan.
Add to it his film debut as a music composer – the upcoming Parwaaz Hai Junoon – which puts extra pressure on him since his grandfather Arshad Sami Khan served the Pakistan Air Force and was a decorated fighter pilot.
We met with the young music composer and asked him about his inspirations, aspirations and what path he would choose for himself so that he can take forward the legacy of both his parents.
Don’t you think that people expect a lot from you ahead of your film debut as a composer because of your lineage?
When I was younger, I used to take a lot of pressure because everyone expected me to succeed like my parents, but as I matured I realized that I didn’t have to follow them but create my own path. The best advice that I got from someone was that no matter how hard I try, I can’t match my parents’ achievements because they are already part of people’s lives – many grew up listening to my father’s songs when they were young, quite a lot of people told me that Aye Khuda was played in their house daily etc.
Similarly, people saw my mother growing up and idolized her as she had a great onscreen presence and was a versatile actress as well. That’s when I decided that I would do my own work, create my own route and try my best not to disappoint my parents.
How difficult was it to compose for a patriotic film, the first PAF film in five decades?
When Momina Bhabi approached me for the film, she told me to give the film a heart, which was a difficult task considering patriotic films don’t have romantic numbers. Therefore, I didn’t think much of the Air Force angle, and maybe that’s why I was able to come up with the soundtrack which doesn’t look like one from a patriotic film.
As a composer I did five songs – most of them romantic – and if the audience is able to connect with the characters through the songs, and the characters are patriotic, then I will consider my job done.
Who are the singers you have used in the film and why aren’t you one of them?
When you have Atif Aslam, Zeb Bangash and Jabar Abbas singing for you, and you are using talented singers like Mustahsan Khan and Zamad Baig too, then you can only consider yourself lucky. As for me singing, well I don’t think the time is right for me to announce myself as a singer.
It’s a difficult task and I would like to get ready first, then try my hand at singing in films or otherwise. My parents always told me that ‘you can do it, doesn’t mean you should do it’ and that’s why I will follow my two passions – music and acting – before turning to singing.
People usually work on TV and later graduate to films; however, you directly entered films without doing much elsewhere. How?
I ask myself the same question because not much of my work has been released and people don’t know what I have done as a composer to get a film. It could have something to do with my being a son of famous parents, because when you are born in the industry people know you more than they know others. There might be 100 more talented people than me waiting to get work but because you’re there, you get at least one chance. That’s why I had to work extra hard to prove that I earned the place and didn’t get it on a silver platter.
It’s a known fact that Bollywood great R. D. Burman was your father Adnan Sami Khan’s biggest inspiration; who is Azaan Sami Khan’s biggest inspiration?
We love Pancham da in our house but my inspirations vary. I listen to all kinds of music be it hit songs from India or Pakistan, Latin music, Western etc. and that’s because I want to experience it all. I am my father’s biggest fan but that doesn’t mean I should compose like him. I listen to his compositions as a music composer, not just as a son and I tell him that he is the best rhythm composer I know. Michael Jackson is one inspiration in our family as we love his songs, most of which were based on rhythm too. Then there is A R Rahman, Illayaraja, Pritam, Beatles and Coldplay etc, so yes, I listen to all so that it can broaden my horizon.
And which instruments do you excel in, considering your father can play ‘em all?
Just the piano; I do have basic knowledge of all the instruments because that’s a requirement of being a music composer, but my main command is on piano. As a teenager, I wanted to play the guitar, but my mother was against it as she knew that I wanted to try the instrument to impress girls, which was true to some extent (smiles). Hopefully, now that I am in the field, I will make it an important weapon in my armoury!
What does the future hold for Azaan Sami Khan?
Before composing songs for Parwaaz Hai Junoon I was assisting Abhishek Varman in Kalank, a Karan Johar film featuring Varun Dhawan, Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit and Alia Bhatt. I learned a lot of things during my time in Mumbai and strongly believe that we have to improve our content to make huge films instead of pumping money into mediocre scripts. Then I have written a script for which I have found a director and we will be going on the floor in the coming October. You will get to know about it in due time and yes, I will also be composing the songs for my film, with the clear intention of carrying the torch forward in style.
