Of murder, mystery & romance: What will be the fate of Aina and Amaan?

Ye Dil Mera has been racing away on our TV screens with its thrilling storyline for the past eight months.

We are eagerly waiting for the ultimate showdown in its much-anticipated final episodes. At the same time, we don’t want Ye Dil Mera to end. Who knows when we will see Ahad and Sajal in a project next! Come to think of it, we got blessed with this drama after ages of Yaqeen Ka Safar.

With the top drama finally gearing for a smashing end, its fans have a tiny complaint that the plot has slowed down. Of course, everyone is craving to know the subsequent fate of all the characters.

Will Mir Farooq Zaman be brought to book by Amaan? What will happen to Amaan and Aina? Will they remain together or will there be an end to their love story? Is somebody going to die? All these questions have been buzzing in our heads for the last four weeks.

We got in touch with the writer of the story, the women with the magical pen Farhat Ishtiaq to quiz her about what is going to happen next in Ye Dil Mera.  Certainly, she would not have revealed the end but we inquired her nevertheless to satiate our curiosity.

Here’s what we learned from our conversation with her. It seems like more twists are coming soon in the upcoming last episodes of Ye Dil Mera.

Gear up for some more suspense!

For those who have been ardent followers of the drama will know that the death of Aina’s mother has forever been a mystery.

In the recent episodes, we realized that she was shot dead after she escaped Mir Farooq Zaman’s detention. However, some of the viewers mused that there is a possibility that she might still be alive or kept in hiding. Also, others thought that there might be another major death of a character in the drama.

Read what the writer has to say about this:

I have tried my best since the beginning to surprise the audience at every turn and bring unpredictability to the plot. I hope I have been successful so far and have tried my best that even the conclusion turns out unpredictable.

The fate of Aina’s mother had been purposely kept questionable, that maybe she is alive or kept hidden somewhere by Ali Baksh. Maybe Ali Baksh played a double game with Mir Farooq Zaman. I had kept these things intentionally a secret in the plot. Likewise, Aina and Amaan’s fate, whether they will part and which of the main characters will remain alive, have also been kept a surprise.

However, as a writer I believe, the end is justified and has done justice to all the fate of the characters.

We hope that like Yaqeen Ka Safar, Ahad and Sajal remain united till the end. Nonetheless, if the writer has planned the death of the main character, we sincerely wish it’s not the hero and heroine of the drama. We surely won’t miss Mir Farooq Zaman. He deserves the most brutal punishment for his vile actions.

But what could be an ideal end to the tale?

Ye Dil Mera is not a run-of-the-mill drama. It kept us on tenterhooks at every turn. Also, it did complete justice to its genre of being a powerful romantic-thriller.  For the remaining pieces of the puzzle to fall into place, we are just holding on and waiting for the end.

We asked Farhat Ishtiaq what she would have advised her characters if all of them were real. Her answers were all that we want the fate of these characters in an ideal world.

Farhat: If these were real characters, Mir Farooq Zaman should be handed to the police since he will never change.

For Aina and Amaan, as they have grown with childhood trauma, it is advisable that they seek therapy so they indulge in normal life. It is not their fault how their life turned out to be but they have been subjected to extreme oppression. They should seek therapy to help themselves with the pain.

But has she planned the same eventual conclusion in the drama as well? We can only wait for the ultimate finale to finally hit our screens!

Ahad Raza Mir & Sajal Aly Deserve Applause

Last year, Ahad Raza Mir created a massive buzz after winning the Betty Mitchell Award for his performance in Canadian theatre play Hamlet, in the category of Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Drama.

Most Pakistanis have surely not witnessed his commendable performance in Hamlet. However, witnessing his intense acting in Yeh Dil Mera, we have realized that Ahad deserves all the international and local accolades in the world. At a very young age, he has become an essential scene-stealer. If a story needs some class, he gives his A-game to the project and it’s pretty evident from his career trajectory.

Some of the most significant scenes performed by Sajal Aly in Ye Dil Mera reminded us of her outstanding acting in her Bollywood debut ‘Mom’. She has grown even more phenomenal over the years, her craft getting finer with time. Her intense dedication to her role as Aina has made it a memorable character and she deserves all the praise for it.

Both the thespians did justice to bring out the matter of childhood trauma, as intended by the writer. The recent episodes raised various objections by the viewers over Aina being unreasonable and planning to prove her father’s innocence just by being confined to a room. We asked Farhat what she has to say about the doubts raised by the fans.

Farhat: The audience will only know through the last episode my real message in the story as I intended to touch upon the issues of childhood trauma and mental health. By the last episode, the audience will realize the reason behind some of Aina’s actions. She was not normal, hence most of her actions were also not normal. The same was with Amaan. Their childhood was marred by murders of their mothers. And they grew up to be troubled adults. Consequently, no actions of theirs can be deemed normal.

There are still a couple of episodes left till Ye Dil Mera bids farewell to us. True, the story has gotten slow but let’s enjoy it while it lasts. Here’s to hoping there is a happy ending to our favorite tale!

I am very different from Zunaira in real life: Hiba Bukhari

Actress Hiba Bukhari may not be taking a stand for her character Zunaira in Tarap, but that has more to do with the drama’s theme than anything else.

It’s the agony that her character endures during the course of the play that makes the audience sympathize with her. Despite being an ideal elder sister, the perfect aunt (of a kid), the caring (grand) daughter, and the girl-next-door, she is assumed to be the person behind everything that goes bad by her folks.

However, when Spotlight asked Hiba Bukhari whether she is a bottled-up individual in real life, she categorically denied the allegation. She also spoke about working with the dashing Babar Ali, sharing a chemistry with Syed Jibran, and what Tarap holds for the audience in the coming weeks.

Tarap puts you alongside the best actors from two eras – Babar Ali (from the 1990s) and Syed Jibran (from 2010). Any other actress would have bolted under pressure but you haven’t; how was the experience of working with such co-stars?

I had worked with Syed Jibran earlier in Bholi Bano and we share good chemistry; it is always a pleasure working with an actor who treats his co-stars with respect. I was working with Babar Ali for the first time but trust me, they both were so good, so supportive, and courteous. Jibran is exactly the opposite of the character he plays in the drama and unlike ASP Adil, he is very co-operative and encouraging.

Despite his vast experience, Babar Ali was so down to earth that it was unbelievable; I still remember that after every scene together, Babar Ali was appreciating my performance and that gave me confidence. Not even people of my generation do that but he was telling me that you are doing a good job and that you did that scene well, etc. In short, while I was acting with them, I was literally on top, not at all under pressure!

Your character Zunaira is that of a girl who is always judged by others for no fault of her own … don’t you think that you have played the bechari a lot?

I do think that Zunaira is playing a bechari but that’s how the script has been written. I remember the characters I have done ever haven’t been just bechari bechari, they were fighting for themselves and had a say in the world; Zunaira is different than all of them.

It let me explore that side of acting where you can play a straight, white character for whom nothing is right, but you have to give all the expressions, look natural and do everything including delivering the variations. At one point I was even questioning myself but then that’s what makes it a unique character and I was fine with it later on.

Tarap focuses on your character a lot – you are a perfect phupi, a dutiful granddaughter, a talented writer, and an elder sis who cares for all. How did you manage to execute the character that had so many shades?

The more the merrier is what I would call this straight character, with lots of shades. It is in character like these that an actor gets the margin to perform to the best of their abilities and be a different person altogether in front of the world. I think I have managed to execute all shades, and it was fun to do all of these things together.

Any specific scene that you would like to mention where you had the most fun and why?

I believe all the scenes had their own fun and stories although, for me, the one scene with my onscreen nephew took the cake as it was something I hadn’t done in a long time.

For the scenes where the strict brother played by Jibran is angry at my character, we worked hard and since we share very good chemistry, we knew how to execute it. You will be seeing Saleem Meraj and Farah Nadir in the coming episodes and although scenes with them will make you sympathize with Zunaira, we had a lot of fun enacting them.

How different is Hiba Bukhari from Zunaira in real life? Is she fond of writing, caring when it comes to family, and above all, trying to make everyone happy?

In real life, Hiba Bukhari is very different from Zunaira; but yes she is fond of writing and is caring when it comes to her family (laughs).

I do try to keep everyone happy but at the same time, I am not a bechari at all. Not at all. I am a fighter, have a voice, and stand for what’s right. I don’t stay down and cry over things, I just try to make it happen!

What should the audience expect from your character in upcoming episodes?

Zunaira is the soul of Tarap, she tells the audience that if they don’t take care of minor things in life, nobody else will come and do that for them.

A lot of things will be taking place in Tarap where Zunaira will stay in her own character and not do something out of the ordinary. That will make people around her realize how kind she was and that she wasn’t the culprit. All you have to do is wait and see!

Imran Ashraf is my favorite young actor of today: Babar Ali

Before he became the lover boy with Jaanu Sunn Zara in the 1990s, Babar Ali was TV’s brightest star.

He had hit TV plays to his name such as Labbaik, Babar, She Jee, Sherry Aur Jozy and Boota From Toba Tek Singh to name a few. After a stint in Lollywood where he wooed beautiful women and had the best songs filmed on him, he is back to his base – Television.

With Tarap he has impressed the generation that was born after Jeeva and continues to do justice with the character of a person who suffers from a split personality disorder. One moment he is a caring husband and the other he is the nastiest person around, and only someone as experienced as Babar Ali would have been able to pull that off.

Spotlight got hold of the Chor Machaye Shor actor who spoke why he was absent from TV, why he chose to return with Tarap, and why he thinks that his best is yet to come. Read on:

Viewers at HUM TV haven’t had the chance to experience the Babar Ali magic, and now you are appearing in two major projects. What made you go for both Tarap and Zebaish?

Babar Ali: I was in the States for a period of time and that’s why I was away from the TV screen. That was the main reason why I wasn’t taking any projects but it has all changed with my return. Now that I am back in Pakistan, I want to do some quality work and entertain my fans.

Your character in Tarap has different shades; at times he is a loving husband and at times an unfaithful one. Where should the audience categorize you – the good guy or a bad one?

Babar Ali: Yes my character in Tarap has different shades, both of a good and a bad guy. That’s because I am playing a man who suffers from a split personality disorder. It was a challenging role for me and that’s why I was interested in going for it.

You are still a smart, handsome man who can woo any actress yet you chose to play mature characters in both the dramas. Any special reason behind that?

Babar Ali: I chose to play mature roles due to the fact I want to bring diversity in my acting career. I don’t want to limit myself to just certain kinds of roles. Having said that, this doesn’t mean I wouldn’t do roles with younger actresses (laughs).

Tell us something about your role in Zebaish and how is it different from that in Tarap?

Babar Ali: When Zebaish airs, you will see that my character in the drama is completely different from the one in Tarap. I cannot discuss it at the moment, but trust me, the audience will be in for a treat.

You started very young and achieved success in your youth; that’s why most of the actors of today have either grown up watching your films or dramas. How do you feel acting opposite them on TV?

Babar Ali: I always get along with my co-actors and I would have no problem acting with kids who grew up watching me. As a matter of fact, it will make me the proudest person if someone tells me that I was the reason they chose acting as their career.

Being in the 40s is always a tricky situation especially for a leading man. How do you plan to move ahead in the Naughty Forties on TV?

Babar Ali: Being in the 40s doesn’t bother me at all! I belong to that group which believes that the 40s is the age when your career takes a huge turn. It’s opening you to new horizons and the prime examples of that are actors like Humayun Saeed, Adnan Siddiqui and Noman Ijaz, etc. The great Amitabh Bachchan gained more popularity in his 40s than he did in the decades before that. I think this will give me an opportunity to do different roles which I couldn’t do as a young actor.

You have seen many young actors on TV … who do you think has the most potential to shine in the coming years?

Babar Ali: All young actors are good but my favorite one is Imran Ashraf of Ranjha Ranjha Kardi fame.

And finally what is the reason behind your forever-young look?

Babar Ali: As far looks are concerned, firstly it’s given by Almighty God and on top, just try living positively and maintain inner peace, and they will never let you age.

5 Reasons Why Tarap Demands Your Attention!

Usually, dramas in the 9 PM slot don’t get the kind of attention 8 pm dramas receive, but then there are some exceptions.

Tarap is one such drama that airs after Sabaat on Sundays and demands your attention because of many reasons. Spotlight lists down five such reasons that will compel you to watch the drama and get hooked to it, making it ideal for binge-watching during the lockdown.

Syed Jibran in the role of an unconventional cop!

You will not what Syed Jibran’s Adil as your brother but he is the best thing to have on your side as a friend. Not that he is always around to lend a shoulder but because his animosity is deadly, especially since he is a police officer. He divorced his wife (Faiza Gillani) for literally standing between his sister and him, always drops in when his presence is least expected, and cares about his sisters in his own way.

He is a devout Muslim who doesn’t attend parties because he can’t say bad things behind anyone’s back yet he makes an example of his former neighbor when he comes to return books to his sister. And above all, his character has a backstory which is something we miss while producing saas-bahu sagas where anything and everything can happen!

The unexpected comeback of the expressive Babar Ali

Those who grew up in the 1990s know that Babar Ali and TV went hand to hand; he could do comedy, he excelled at dramatic roles and even played Mohammad Bin Qasim because he looked the part. His welcome return to mainstream TV has raised the bar for all the other actors around. He acts with his eyes, can be both a caring husband and a deceiving partner within seconds, pull off any character be it that of a young man or a middle-aged one, and steal the show despite sharing the scene with actors of today.

As a publisher who takes interest in the lives of his authors – without letting his wife (Nausheen Shah) take a hint – is what makes his character all the more interesting. The scene where he saves Hiba Bukhari’s Zunera from her own brother must be shown to youngsters who want to win a girl’s heart but don’t know how!

Hiba Bukhari giving a new definition to oppressed!

She may be relatively new to the world of acting but Hiba Bukhari has done a fine job playing Zunera here. She plays the character brilliantly, coming up as the ideal sister, the perfect aunt to a four-year-old, the talented writer, and the girl next door (literally!) with whom you would fall in love at first sight, yet there are more cons than pros to her. Her grandmother doesn’t trust her, blaming her for her younger sister’s actions, his brother thinks she is always wandering around aimlessly, her former neighbor (Lubna Saleem) believes she has her mesmerized her brother (Syed Arez) whereas the younger sister (Laiba Khan) thinks she is too weak to take a stand.

With a backstory like hers, this is the best portrayal of a young girl whose mother left them early, who was raised by her granny, respects his brother and wants to be there for her nephew, all at the same time. And that stutter that happens when she is confronted increases the audience’s sympathies every time!

The ready to explode and free-spirited Laiba Khan

Every household has a rebel who wants nothing to do with the rules and regulations; Laiba Khan’s Hani here is the firecracker here which is always ready to explode. She doesn’t care about her brother’s idiotic rules, doesn’t give importance to her always-whining grandmother, wants to live her life her own way in which everyone is happy, content, and free.

She started the drama slow but her character gained momentum with every passing episode and in the coming weeks, it seems she will upstage all with her rebellious nature, and the sooner that happens, the better. Like most of the characters in this drama, her backstory is interesting but the audience is more curious about her future than anything else!

And then there is Saleem Meraj!

Wait … where is Saleem Meraj in Tarap? Exactly! In the presence of Syed Jibran and Babar Ali, nobody seems to notice the veteran actor but trust me, he is around and kicking. He is one of the constables who roam around Jibran’s Adil and have appeared in a couple of scenes so far in the drama.

But that’s not all, where there is Saleem Meraj, there is trouble! From what it seems, he is all set to make a grand entry in the next two weeks and will do what he does best – enthrall the audience with his phenomenal acting. How he manages to do that and what will happen when he takes other characters head-on, that’s what we are waiting for. If you haven’t seen the drama yet, this is the best time to start watching it because a) the best is yet to come and b) you will not regret it!
