We have always seen her beaming with love and happiness, and now her aggressive battle with Cancer has made Nadia Jamil even more positive toward existence.
Those who have followed her personal and professional trajectory know she never had an easy life. Our fighter has been through the immense struggle, but you will hardly find an interview of Nadia, a post, or a tweet from her where she has complained about her ordeals.
You will not find her ranting about her battles, being ungrateful, bitter, or trying to seek sympathy. In fact, she is empowering to the core. Her every story will move you, making you a believer that life can indeed be beautiful and it is just a matter of perspective.
She has been keeping us all updated with her progress throughout her cancer journey. The star accepted her disease and even became friends with her sickness. We saw her dancing through her radiation treatment, rocking a saree while posing with her doctors, and finding solace in her pet dog.
The Behadd actress used her celebrity power and status to uplift those around her, even standing up for abuse against women and voicing her supports towards the rape victims in Pakistan. Many might think cancer must have made her vulnerable and distraught. On the contrary, she is wiser, more lovable, inspiring, and all the more beautiful.
We contacted Nadia to catch up with her and have a heart-to-heart with her. The sweet soul bared it all and let us in on her private moments with her disease.
I am so humbled and feel so blessed with everyone’s prayers. People have huge hearts. As for what got me through, the NHS is an amazing institution, it held most of me together throughout my illness. My mum came to my side and I had the good wishes of friends and family. I feel so grateful!
Allah blessed me with a sense of humor at the darkest times, a sense of self when I was the most alone, and Faith in His choices for me. Alhamdulillah, what more could I ask for!
Again the NHS helped me a lot as did my personal therapy. Meditation, prayer, Faith in Allah, in oneself, reaching out for someone to listen, and finding an incredible social media family of kind people, all helped.
The core strength came from me. I saw myself through it. And I was getting it from Allah. The awareness, that sadness and pain are a part of life and are teachers telling me something I need to listen to, has been an important lesson. It’s not an easy journey- Life. It’s not supposed to be, but we make it harder than it needs to be by resisting the inevitable change. We hold onto the past too desperately. Letting go of relationships, people, things, experiences, makes the journey a lot easier. They then stay in your life out of love not out of compulsionAlone is where the important lessons are learned, in silence and solitude.

Thank you very much. We attach so much of our identity with how we look instead of what we do for ourselves and others. I didn’t realize how much I hide behind my hair until I let it all go- the hair and all the behaviors that attached themselves with it. I had to strip bare and be real. It felt wonderfully liberating and strong to look in the mirror and feel good without all the stereotypes.
People I loved told me I was unattractive to my face and it did not shake me. Because I liked what I saw in the mirror. I saw vulnerability, strength, honesty, and kindness. It made me smile.
My bones are still a bit soft post-chemo and I’m still very dehydrated and burned from daily radiation for a month. I’m also struggling with diabetes and insulin injections. So eating healthy, pacing myself to exercise, stretch, and walk is all-important.
I try and keep my days simple and spend lots of time with my dog and in nature. I read poetry and am doing a literature course on Homer. Keeping it simple keeping it real.

Yes. I do. I am alone. No one else can or should be invited to fight my battles for me. But I can appreciate love and kindness even as I fight my own battles and learn to parent myself more and more.
I never want to be in the emotionally vulnerable position of feeling abandoned by those I Iove, again. I must learn and have learned, people have their battles. No one abandons an adult, except the adult herself or himself. How I felt as a child can’t haunt me as an adult if I equip myself with a self-parenting spirit.
Me and Allah. My Faith, Allah’s presence. Allah’s gift to me of my self. All the incredible social media family. My son’s strength.
We need to talk more about awareness. One in 3 women in the world will get breast cancer. Yet no one talks about self-examinations to our women, nor about getting assessed to catch cancer early. There is a fear around the name of cancer. We need to break the fear and stigmas so people learn how to examine themselves and go to doctors for examinations. The earlier we catch it the better.
Like every year, some of the biggest names of our entertainment industry have made it to Pakistan Civil Awards 2020.
Recognizing them for their honorable work in their field, the Government of Pakistan pays a tribute to these veterans for serving the country and making us all proud of their remarkable work.
All of the artists and veterans that have made it to the list have a deep bond with Hum Network, and we cannot have been more honored to have them as a part of the booming Hum family.
Working in several Hum’s dramas and projects, these heroes have worked to collectively elevate their careers along with the entertainment network and uplifted the industry and the entire country on the whole.
Let’s take a quick look at the services of these legends of Pakistan’s entertainment industry, their work, and accomplishments that will forever be a part of their grand legacy.
The ultimate boss woman and a far-sighted leader, the president of Hum Network Sultana Siddiqui has been marked amongst the visionary citizens awarded the third-highest honor and civilian award, Sitara-i-Imtiaz.
A driving force and the face of Hum, Sultana Appa has ensured she leaves no stone unturned in heading the network and ensuring that quality content is produced throughout its avant-garde 15 years of success. So much so, she is the first woman in South Asia to establish a T.V channel and we cannot be more proud of this leading light of a lady.
A look at her life proves that she has bravely shattered the glass ceiling and boasts more than forty years of a seismic career as a producer, director, and now head of a thriving network of channels. Under her leadership, the channel has produced some of the best projects in Pakistan, including Udaari, Rehaai, Kankar, Humsafar, and of course, Zindagi Gulzar Hai. She continues to be the dynamic dean of Pakistani entertainment via the innovative business model of an empire she has built.
Sultana Siddiqui couldn’t be more grateful for the wonderful feat and vies to work even harder. Here’s what she told Spotlight during a candid chat:
I never keep expectations regarding receiving awards. Since the beginning of my career, I just aim that I excel at my work. Nothing else comes to my mind other than this. Nevertheless, when you get such a recognition, you are grateful to your Lord and your heart craves to do even greater things.
It is already a responsibility for you when you have set your mind at a particular task. When I was working on Zindagi Gulzar Hai, I was concerned that what if my work was not up to the mark. And when you are at such a high post that people look up to you as the only channel being led by a professional, you have huge accountability. There is a sword of responsibility hanging on my head 24/7 of being the best at my work.
Bushra Ansari needs no introduction and this isn’t the first time either that she has made it to the Pakistan Civil Awards.
Back in 1989, she bagged the Pride of Performance Award by the Government of Pakistan. This year, she has been bestowed with Sitara-i-Imtiaz for her contributions to the industry over six decades. She is a glowing icon and an evergreen legend, featuring an illustrious career with charming performances in projects like 50-50, AnganTerha, The Barat Series and not to forget, Udaari on Hum TV.
She has also blessed other Hum TV projects like Bilquees Kaur, Pakeeza, MeraNaseeb, Deewar-e-Shab, and much recently Zebaish with her hard work, sometimes as an actor and other times as a writer.
Talking to Spotlight, BushraAapa was extremely elated upon receiving her much due Sitara-i-Imtiaz.
I am much honored to receive the award and the recognition bestowed by the Government of Pakistan. You get this award only when you have done immense work and people deem you as ‘iconic’. It takes immense hard work and a long journey to receive such acclaim.
I will continue to maintain the standard of work and avail the respect granted by Allah and our audience. Such awards do make us honorable but also remind us to be a useful human for our society. So we should ensure we return the love society gives us and impart awareness to help our people.
When we talk about Talat Hussain, his countless projects and memorable characters come to mind. He is stylish, classic, and a giant performer of our industry. It was only about time that the country acknowledged his work in the field of entertainment and bestowed him with Sitara-i-Imtiaz.
Pushing boundaries and experimenting with his roles, Talat Hussain rules every scene with his natural delivery. His bona fide persona and authoritative voice only added all the more spirit to his work. He has been featured in several foreign films and series. Whatever Talat learned from his studies and stints abroad, he made sure he brought his learnings to Pakistan. That’s why his acting was class-apart and he owned every frame, every scene he performed.
Hum TV fans would remember his performance as a bed-ridden father in MannMayal. His immaculate performance and strong camaraderie with Hamza Ali Abbasi made the serial worth a watch.
A woman of substance, Sakina Samo is the perfect start in the industry. She is a combination of intellect and talent that makes her amongst the most elite performers of her time. The depth, passion, and integrity in her personality are reflected in her work. She glows wherever she goes and conquers the screen in every role.
With avatars so diverse, our sweet SamoAppa has proved that she can ace any role. From acting in Jungle, Choti Si Dunya, Hawa Ki Beti, DilBanjaara, Aseerzadim, Dar Si Jati Hai Saila to directing MohabatSubhKaSitara Hai on Hum TV, the thespian has proved she is extraordinary.
Back in 2011, she was granted with Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in recognition of her work in the Pakistani entertainment industry. This time, she has been bestowed with the President’s Award for Pride of Performance.
The year is even bigger for her as her first feature film, Intezaar is set to premiere at New York’s Harlem International Film Festival.
What can be better for Humayun than celebrating his 25 years in Pakistan’s entertainment industry with the glorious Pride of Performance award from the Government of Pakistan?
One thing is certain: make Humayun part of any project and it is bound to reap ratings or be a box-office hit! An evergreen superstar and one of the most ‘bankable’ artists, Humayun has worked in more than 80 dramas so far, most of them being predominantly massive hits. Saeed is every inch ‘hero material’ and despite the criticism that he often casts himself in his own projects, the audience turns out in hoards to watch him on screen.
People cannot get enough of him, his recent successful hit both on the big and small screen are evident of this. His performance in Bin Roye across is everyone’s favorite, Mahira Khan affirmed him as the ultimate lover boy. Furthermore, his cameo in Ehd e Wada added more life to the already hit drama.
We caught with Humayun to ask him how he feels about receiving the honor. Here is what he had to say:
This is indeed an awesome and respectful surprise I received on August 14th and my happiness doubled on Independence Day after hearing this news.
I feel that whatever work I will do in the future will be with the same passion and hard work. Such recognition does elevate one’s responsibility. Responsibility increases after every project. We are still learning and there is a lot to do in this field. We are still far from bigger industries like Hollywood.
It is our responsibility that we keep learning and keep entertaining our audiences. I am thankful to the people who worked with me always. I am grateful to Allah for the respect he has given me and the viewers who continue to show love. I feel I am the luckiest actor and producer in this field.
The past couple of years have been tough for Ali Zafar, given that he was caught in controversy but took to the court to clear his name from the scandal once and for all. Nevertheless, his ardent fans remained strong beside him. And now that he has earned the Pride of Performance award, his followers could not have been more elated.
A painter, poet, singer, and an actor, Ali Zafar is insanely gifted. From his Coke Studio renditions to PSL Anthems, chart-topping singles like ‘Channo’ to his action-packed ‘Teefa’ avatar, Zafar has aced it all.
What’s more, he has even proved his mettle in Bollywood working with big-wigs across the border in movies like Tere Bin Laden, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, London, Paris, New York, and Dear Zindagi. His OST for Hum TV dramas like Zindagi Gulzar Hai, Ehd e Wafa and now Mushk have been a hit, garnering millions of views and adding the musical spark to our favorite dramas.
HUM TV’s drama Dil Ruba may have ended but it has left a mark on the audience’s mind due to its ability to engage, enrage, and entertain.
It engaged the audience with its fast-paced storyline, it enraged the viewers when they saw boys falling left, right, and center of just one girl and entertained them with the beautiful execution. Not just that, it managed to deliver a few subtle lessons that would go a long way, if the viewers had their thinking cap on.
If not, then we have listed down four such lessons that might come in handy for parents, their sons, and their daughters out there:
Just like fathers believe in ‘Boys will be Boys’ routine, every parent should also know about ‘Girls will be Girls’. When young, everyone needs attention be it a boy or a girl but when parents tend to ignore their kids, they turn into Sanam and Junaid. Sanam’s mother (Marina Khan) didn’t confront her when she brought gifts home, her elder sister (Durre Fishan) didn’t rat on her either while in Junaid’s case, his mother (Huma Nawab) encouraged him when she told him that he was hopelessly in love.
Yes, they all cared about them but they should have been more attentive – in Sanam’s case, the mother and sister were busy with an ailing father, in Junaid’s it was a strict father who had a one-track mind and was in some sort of debt with his elder brother.
And in this scenario, when Sabeeh (Mohib Mirza) gave Sanam undue attention, he got his heart broken while Ayaz (Asad Siddiqui) came into her life as a friendly neighborhood photographer and destroyed it. The rest followed although Sanam could have saved herself from trouble had she matured a little earlier than realizing her problem way too late. Whatever the reason, it was the fault of both the ‘boys’ and the girl, and it could have been avoided had the parents been more attentive and careful.
We may not be able to choose our family but we can certainly choose how to deal with them, that’s what Dil Ruba taught us. If Sanam had reciprocated the love of her first cousin (Mohib Mirza), she might never have faced any trouble at all; if Junaid had listened to his father than contemplate suicide, he might have had a chance with his cousin; had Sanam’s Phupo (Laila Wasti) been there from the start, things might have been more rosy than troublesome for the two households, and had Sanam stayed on the path her Father in law (Shehryar Zaidi) set for her, life would have been set for her. She didn’t trust her family with her escapades into her fantasy world and that cost her the reality.
Some of the characters in the play got the end they earned, not the one they deserved. Mohib Mirza’s Sabeeh wanted to marry his first cousin Sanam (Hania Aamir), got his heartbroken, saw her getting married to his younger stepbrother, missed the bus when she married her second husband, and was nowhere in sight when she got married the third time. It was only after realizing his mistake, and that his nephew was suffering that he agreed to marry Sanam, and became her fourth husband when he could easily have been her first.
Similarly, Sanam suffered a lot in her life, and had she died at the end instead of living happily ever after, that would have hurt the audience who would have remembered the end, but not in a good way. That would have been more Alpha Bravo Charlie, instead of Ehd-e-Wafa, and we all loved Ehd-e-Wafa for the happy ending, while still get saddened by talking about Alpha Bravo Charlie after so many years. The rest of the guys got the end they deserved be it Syed Jibran’s Khurram, Ghana Ali’s Natasha, Asad Siddiqui’s Ayaz, and Shehroz Sabzwari’s Junaid, who did try to outsmart life at some point in time but got outsmarted in the end.
Contrary to what Donald Sutherland said in The Italian Job, ‘I trust everyone, I just don’t trust the devil inside them’, Sanam trusted both everyone and the devil inside them. You may agree or disagree, but the boys here were to be blamed more than Hania’s Sanam, as she summarized very well in the final episode, in a speech to one of the guys who wanted to confront her, but got confronted instead. She told Shehroz Sabzwari’s Junaid that it was he who made the first move, he was the one who sent the gifts, he was the person who approached Sanam and wanted to marry her whereas she followed only after he threatened to kill himself.
The same goes for the rest of the guys who she trusted, but she shouldn’t have, a lesson she learned the hard way. Ayaz (Asad Siddiqui) was a fraud photographer who violated her trust by getting her photographed in a compromising position, Syed Jibran’s Khurram used her to gain his father’s trust and finally his property whereas her own brother Arsalan (Saad Azhar) disowned her without giving her the benefit of the doubt. Then there were the people who came into her life after her second marriage making her distrust the world more. In the end, it was her repentance that saved the day for her and her kid, as she married Sabeeh, the stepbrother of her first husband (Nabeel Zuberi) and also her first cousin.
Ghana Ali loves a challenge!
That is exactly what she told us while we had a heart-to-heart with her this week. There is something very different about her persona. She appears unafraid, straight forward, and always collected.
We don’t see her as the damsel in distress on our screens. In fact, she is often spotted as the baddie in stories and pulls off all her characters with aplomb. The starlet can be spotted in two of Hum TV’s top projects ‘Saraab’ and Dil Ruba’.

Though she is essaying a negative character in both the stories, there is a difference of day and night in her avatars. But what has made Ghana opt for the evil woman? Has it become a habit or do the offers come by chance?
We couldn’t help asking Ghana while we sat down with her to have a chat. She opened up about playing Natasha and Warda in Dil Ruba and Saraab respectively, also gearing up for her upcoming movie ‘Gawah Rehna’.
Excerpts from the conversation are as follows:
It is not that I love being the bad party on screen. I took a break from acting for my studies and made my comeback through various dramas on other channels. I have done a lot of negative plays and got immense recognition for them. For Hum, this is the first time I am playing a bad party and somehow, both the projects turned out with me playing a negative role in the story.
There is a lot of margin in playing a negative role. For me, I would play any character that has a margin in it. So if a negative character being offered to me has margin and is difficult to play, I would do it.
My favorite is Wardah, also Natasha. But primarily, Wardah because I have never played a middle-class negative character. Else all my roles revolved around a villain hailing from an elite class. It was not easy to look older as well. I had to die my hair and got a tight, sleek hairdo to fit into the role. People mostly typecast me into elite roles and believe that I cannot do middle-cast characters. But I had to prove them wrong.
Thanks to Mohsin Talat. He helped me a lot and somehow I did it.

My experience working with Hania Aamir in Dil Ruba was okay but my experience with Sonya Hussyn was amazing in Saraab. I loved the fact that Sonya is so dedicated to her work, she is so passionate. She is such a good actress and it is always fun to work with a good star.

I believe there is a frustration in women while having a child and dealing with negativity around, maybe from their mothers-in-law. The situation becomes so tense that they are bound to react or reflect. However, I suggest that they should believe in Allah and wait for the right time. Be positive and have faith. Whatever has been willed by Him, will happen.
Saraab shows that the way Hoor’s family and even Wardah treats her is very wrong. She is very dominating and tends to control everything. Being the elder sister, Wardah should have tried to understand the problem she was going through as Hoor was her little sister. I have my own sister and she is very touchy about me since I am the youngest.
So I feel Wardah’s influence is very negative and elder sisters should be very close to their sister. They should play a positive part. There was too much ignorance from Wardah towards Hoor. When you observe that someone close to you is not behaving mentally fine, you should shower more love towards them. Not everything should be reflected in anger and irritation.
I am waiting for a film of mine ‘Gawah Rehna’ which will either be released by the end of this year or the beginning of next year. And there is another project directed by Ali Hasan that I am working on.
